There is a joke about what kind of animal Set's head is, in the TV show Stargate SG-1. The show focused heavily on mythology as ancient aliens, starting with the Egyptian gods and branching out from there. In the joke, three warriors, one each in service to the gods Horus, Apophis, and Set are met on what is not yet a battlefield, but may soon become one. Each wears an elaborate helmet shaped like their god's animal-face, a hawk for Horus, a sepant for Apophis, and whatever the heck Set's face is supposed to be for his warrior. It is a tense moment. Apophis's warrior's eyes glow. Horace's warrior's beak glistens, Set's warrior's nose drips.

Set ripped out one of Horus’s eyes, and Horus tore off one of Set’s testicles. That said, Set is not infertile. He does in fact have several different children depending upon the myths, including but not limited to the following: Sebek (the Crocodile God he fathered with Neith), Serket (the Scorpion Goddess he fathered with Neith), Wepwawet (the Wolf God he fathered with Nephthys), Thoth (in some stories Thoth emerges from Set’s brow), and Anubis (some stories have him as Set’s child by Nephthys, others say he’s Osiris’s bastard born from Nephthys’s infidelity, and others claim he was the son of both Set and Osiris through Nephthys).

Fun fact: Osiris and Isis mariage was mimiced by the Pharaohs who also wed their sisters. However it is heavily speculated that this was more of a front show becuase religion was extremlly important and ancient egyptians society. This is because the various dynasties overall lack the malformations and mutations due to incest, like with the hapsburgs, and so the childrens of the pharaohs most likelly came from his concubines.
@barbiquearea

A fun fact about Byblos: It was a very important city in the ancient near East for the simple reason that it was the only place around that had a forest of cedar trees, or any trees really that weren't palm trees which don't make for great building material. Cedar wood in contrast was an excellent building material which was strong and barely rotted. Byblos would earn a privileged place as a trading partner of Egypt as Egypt needed cedar wood to build boats, temples, and coffins for the elite. Byblos' prolific position in trade is actually reflected in the etymology of the word "Bible". The ancient Greeks bought all their Egyptian papyrus from Byblos and because of this "Byblos" became the Greek word for paper/ papyrus and "biblio" the word for book.

One of my favorite things about Egyptian mythology is that ancient Egypt as a distinct culture existed for so long that we have radically different versions of gods and stories from different time periods. For instance, in some time periods, Ra and Horus are merged into a single god, Ra-Horakhty. In the New Kingdom, the hidden god Amun gained prominence, and so he was merged with Ra into Amun-Ra. One of my other favorite things is that nobody actually knows what the heck animal is associated with Set. Egyptologists simply refer to it as the "set animal." Some theorize that it represents an unknown, now-extinct animal, others that it's just a jackal that has been altered so it doesn't conflict with Anubis, and others think it may represent a specific breed of dog. One thing that complicates this though is that Set may be one of the oldest attested gods of Egypt - some scholars believe he is depicted on the Mace Head of King Scorpion, dating to around 4000 BCE, towards the end of the pre-dynastic period. Other scholars disagree with that association though, saying that the god depicted there is actually a different god. Whatever the case though, the representation of Set does not change over time, which suggests that he was intentionally depicted as this specific animal from first appearance.

The name "Osiris" was actually a version of his name that we got from Greek. "Wsjr" (or pronounced "Wesir") is what his name actually comes out as in written Egyptian form.
@taimunozhan
@taimunozhan 11 месяцев назад
It's important to remember that Egyptian Hieroglyphic (and Demotic) writing didn't indicate vowels, so more often than not we are not sure of exactly how Ancient Egyptian names were pronounced. We often use what is know as "Egyptological pronunciations" which is a modern invention that fills the vowels in according to certain rules, most commonly adding E's to break consonant clusters. That's what gives us "Wesir" from wsyr (Osiris) or "Ramses" from rꜥmss. In some cases, however, linguists have been able to reconstruct the original pronunciation with some reasonable confidence thanks to transcriptions in other languages that did write vowels (including Ancient Greek, Akkadian, Sumerian, Hittite) and the way the words evolved into the Coptic languages, descendants of Ancient Egyptian that survived until modern times (now mostly used as a liturgical language for Christians in Egypt). In the case of Osiris, everything points at something along the lines of 'Usire' (that'd be approximately oo-SEE-reh for an English speaker).
@krityaan

We don't know how it's pronounced at all. The ancient hieroglyphs didn't have written vowels - so the pronunciation is entirely up to assumptions.

In the version I heard, When Osiris's penis was thrown in the Nile it was eaten by Sobek the Crocodile god who was mentally more of a crocodile than a man so he thought it was a snack and ate it. Then later he was punished by having his tongue cut out.

Fun Fact: Yu-Gi-Oh's infamous _Exodia the Forbidden One_ is based on the Mythology of Osiris; The fact that Exodia is separated into multiple pieces and you automatically win when all five are in-hand directly references how Osiris was split apart by Set and how Isis recovered his body. While _Slifer the Sky Dragon_ is also referred to as Osiris in the original Japanese content, Nut is probably the more accurate deity for Slifer to be compared to.

From what I heard, Set's head is supposed to be a Jackle.

Nah, it's literally its own thing. Referred to as the sha, or Set animal, there really isn't a match for it in the natural world. He's sometimes associated with the Greek monster Tython so the sha is often call the Tythonia beast. Some versions also have Set/Seth with the head of a donkey or even a flamingo.

@@HBHaga Its possible that there once was an animal that resembled the Set animal that has gone extinct. I imagine it was a species of desert dogs that might have been outcompeted by jackals overtime.

I think they got the wrong tree when Osiris's coffin touched the bank. Heather is more of a shrub. The tree was a willow know for its fast growing a long the Nile and for it's medicinal properties.

One version I've read about had it that the scattered parts of Osiris's body were found by the goddess Isis...basically relying on her own version of the Baker Street Irregulars (asking kids to look around and report back what they saw to figure out where her husbands missing parts were).
