Oslo 🇳🇴 vs Copenhagen 🇩🇰 | Comparing the Senses 

Definitely agree with the feeling that Oslo is "younger." They're very different atmospheres, but I think Oslo does a great job of owning its "newness."

I have never been to Oslo, but looking at the footage, it seem to remind more of Denmark's 2nd largest city Aarhus, that is also more "modern" in style than Copenhagen, even though Aarhus has Den Gamle By (The Old Town) that is the world's first open-air town museum of it's kind and will take you all the way back to the 1600's. But otherwise there are more "fancy" new ongoing building projects in Aarhus in compare to Copenhagen, and Aarhus also has one of the largest art museums in Northern Europe, the top-class ARoS Modern Art museum in the center of the city.

I definitely agree that both have their strengths and weaknesses! I personally did love Oslo a lot more than I expected to. It felt refreshingly remote.

Oslo is amateurish like everything in Norway. A country with no culture and a government that doesn't give a shit about people but gladly steal their money and won't let them have nice things like GOOD INFRASTRUCTURE! Did you know that Albania has better roads than Norway!? ALBANIA! One of the poorest countries in Europe. When I was INDIA they had fancier highways than I ever saw in Norway. INDIA!!!!!!!!!!!! Anyway... you have access to nature in Copenhagen too. There are several huge forest-like parks within the city borders that are designed to give you the feeling of the country side. I took me 13 years to figure that out myself and it happened by accident. We were drunk and were supposed to take a taxi to a place and got a message that the party had been moved to another location and we'd be updated ASAP so we told the driver to let us off and we'd just wait where we were since we had a few beers in the backpack. And we got let off in the middle of the woods but we could see lights of the city in every direction far far away. After a about half an hour treking the woods drunk in the dark we came upon a gas station and asked them to call a taxi 'cause we figured we'd wait for more info on the party in the city instead of the woods. And I asked the girl behind the counter "Where are we?", 'cause I know the city pretty well,but this made no sense to me. She said we were in Copenhagen and that the forest was one of many parks built to simulate the feelings of the countryside.

I like what you said about "needing both." It's great to have that taste of modern Scandinavia and also that taste of old Europe. I'm jealous of your winter visit, I imagine Oslo in the snow is beautiful.

That's a bit of a shame, we have some impressive museums in CPH. Hopefully you'll pay another visit in the future :D

Thanks! It's cool to see the small differences within those similarities. It's equally fun to visit the major cities on the east coast of the US and see how the little differences in history and local identity have created the cities of today.

You can't compare the two cities. Copenhagen reeks of European empire. Oslo reeks of a tiny city trying to act like a capitol but just can't do it. Copenhagen seems professional. Oslo... not so much. Looks like it was built by a bunch of drunk lepers. Copenhagen appears bigger and grander than Oslo. Oslo is like a tiny mouse trying to roar but can't do it in it's narrow claustrophobic streets surrounded by ugly buildings and the lack of class.

@@fuqupal that's the dumbest thing I've ever heard, both Metropolitan areas are very close in size, 2,1 million for Copenhagen and 1,7 million for Oslo. Neither is tiny.

But the oxygen depletion from agriculture does happen at deeper water, not immediately at the shoreline, so while it certainly affects biology, the beaches themselves are actually the most unaffected areas. So I haven't forgotten and I hope the epithet of hypocrite was not directed towards me.

Remember that several things can be true at once. It is true that Danish agriculture pollutes the sea with excessive nutrients and causes oxygen depletion. It is also true that Denmark is Northern Europe's primary bech destination with 60 million stays a year. None of these facts exclude each other or involve any forgetfulness. I am still awaiting your reply to whether it is me you regard as a hypocrite.

Indeed! I think it's similar to how people may not think of "the beach" when they think of the UK or Ireland. They're certainly there, but they aren't the most internationally recognized part. Copenhagen's beaches were a pleasant surprise!

Probably because most foreigners only think of Copenhagen. I am from Jutland and there are many tourists here comming from mainly germany to the beaches.

@@fuqupal Nonsense! Of course you can compare them. Both cities are close to 1000 years old and so many things and people from Bergen ended up in Copenhagen. It is not just population numbers that make cities comparable, but common initial culture and how they have developed over the centuries. Both the similarities and the differences make Copenhagen and Bergen interesting objects for comparison.

Interesting...hot dogs are typically associated with American culture, with the sausages imported originally from Germany and Austria. (for what's worth, I don't think it's just Americans who don't associate hot dog stands with Denmark, but I could be wrong!)
