I bought the base model then picked up the Mic 2 later. I can say i am loving every minute of using this camera. I really like the smart gimbal mode. What i have found is in the dynamic framing is you can adjust it with the joystick and it will stay in that area. Like if you use the rule of 3rds which is a little to far left or right on the screen you can adjust it a bit and it will stay in that area. Today I did a vlog used up 63% of the battery but I also did some slow motion and accidentally left it recording when I didn't want it recording. I have a couple battery packs i can bring with me but generally I am doing it during my lunch hour so I have yet to run out of battery. I have the P2 but never use it but the P3 just makes me excited to get out and do more videos.
2 things I'd like to have. Gamma correction mode for log footage (ie. a display LUT that isn't recorded but makes the screen more viewable to judge exposure). Also, would really like to find a ND filter set that would work with the DJI Wide Angle filter. They all seem to have their magnets out of wack when trying to stack. Maybe just a different brand of wide angle filter might be necessary. Good content here. subbed...
Hi Jo. Very nice review, as always ! I was expecting it. I had an OP1 and 2 but I bought a Sony ZV1 following your channel and great tips about it. As stabilisation was crap, I ended up with a gimbal. And an external mic, and a wide angle… which , at the end of the day, was making a big bag of tools around such a small camera. As I also always carry an Actioncam (Action 4) and a drone , it was too big and heavy for vacation trips and a motorcycle road trip I did last year. Went back to the OP3 creative combo and now all fits in a light package. Absolutely no regret about the ZV1 . I lost the real zoom lens and some great features, but the versatility , stability and low profile of the OP3 is really a plus.and image quality is equivalent (even better due to 10k) and sound much better. Regarding your remark on the ND filters and the fact that the head does not store properly, you’re partially right: I agree that the camera head does not store in its self protective position, but if you don’t remove the ND filter, the head will detect it and store (and lock) itself in a 90* position which will still allow you to store the OP3 in its native case. So no need to always remove the filter. Kind regards. Phil
This one is super tempting. It has great specs and is perfect for vlogging. Built in gimbal is a huge positive. As always Film Alliance has the most detailed review I’ve seen. Not just hype.
Great info. I believe the histogram and highlights can be seen on the OP3 screen. You'll have to go into the manual exposure section to pop it onto the screen.
The ND filters are great as a screen protector, I never remove them. The most annoying thing of the Pocket 3 is the Timelapse/Hyperlapse limitations (8 bit, max 2 second exposure compared to previous versions, no easing between points on the hyperlapse, etc...) and the 4th axis movement. Also, if you want to use both the DJI Mic 2 and the Pocket 3 using only the Creator Combo, insert the Pocket 3 on the official case upside down and you're all set for a quick vlog system. Attach the Pocket 3 to the Pgytech Snaplock/Caplock/Nanolock and you have quite a versatile fast system that is easy to carry.
The case was tight for the 1st month but it actually loosened up and fits everything perfectly for me now. Still looks good and held up well. It just needed a little stretch time.
@@thefilmalliance yeah it's not perfect, but you know what it's better than anything else on the market in this type of camera I've compared to footage with my GoPro 10 which has digital stabilisation built into it I've even compared it to my XT5 and honestly, it holds its own. The beauty of this camera is it portability it's so small and so light and it's easy to use so I think that's the selling point of this camera not so much everything else it's the portability of it. I was very lucky to get one because I'm in Australia as well and there was a particular camera company that had some left over and I found one. If you are a content creator or a RU-vidr or even just someone doing simple Street blogs I don't really think this camera can be folded too much. It's not perfect but it's pretty close. Thanks for your video channel I will be starting my RU-vid channel eventually as well. I'm a landscape photographer in Australia
I found that while climbing mountains through SEA that I was less inclined to pull out my FX30 and set up until I got to the top. So I pulled the trigger and I think the OP3 will be a great bts camera for me, or main camera when I'm too exhausted from hiking. Any recommendations for using it in the rain besides "don't"?
love this video! what a channel! new sub here. Been on the fence about getting one and after watching a few videos especially this one, i'm going to get one, now just to find it in stock will be my other issue! thanks for this!
Thank you for this. I’ll have to look into purchasing some of those. I would hate to have to put on and takeoff and filters every single time I turn the Osmo pocket on.
Your op3 appears particularly unresponsive, I think mine isn't as bad, as for the creator pouch, I can fit all the pack accessories and the op3 in his protective case but you need to find the right spot for each to be able to close it, at first it was really tight! Great video! :)
Aha, thank you. Yes my OP3 was not the best when it came to touchscreen. Could be the firmware? Anyway, thanks for the heads up on that. I’ll have to reposition everything and re-try
Won't B&H let you keep the camera after such a great and thorough review? I imagine it would help them sell a lot! I love mine- in fact I'm afraid I'll be neglecting my Sony a7C and other cameras a lot!
@@thefilmalliance You are most welcome! If you keep in touch with DJI, perhaps they'll send you some sort of gift someday. I was having trouble with an Insta360 Go 2 which I'd bought over a year ago, because of bluetooth connectivity, and we kept sending the unit back and forth, replacing, etc., yet still, the same problem! Finally (after almost a year!), they gave me a deal on a Go 3 (which I think is much better), just having had to pay the difference, plus they sent a mic adapter as a gift, and an eventual gift box with some little odds and ends. Anyway, once again, a very impressive, pro-looking review! I hope DJI at least sees it!
Happy birthday and I think this would be an excellent camera for product reviews on RU-vid. Just don’t go closer than 11 inches because that’s what its minimum focus distance is. But you could scale in pretty close with that 4K footage and get the macro shot.
Great Video! I just got the OP3, and I'm really loving it! I saw in your video that you had the OP1 with Micro 4th Axis, have you tried it with the OP3? Or any other 4th Axis stabilizer?
Hi! thanks for a great review, i'm planning on purchasing the OP3 soon and as well as might dive into your course to help me with the basics as well - what SD card do you recommend for the pocket 3?
Something worth noting for vertical content- it's possible to flick the camera sideways/onto it's side with the display in landscape mode, and you can record full 4k60 vertical without the video cropping in. Sometimes the camera doesn't want to switch into the right mode when you do that and it'll say gimbal has reached it's movement limits or whatever
Oh ok, thanks for letting me know. Someone said they flip the OP3 upside down or something so the protective case is looking up? I’ll have to reposition and try it out
@@thefilmalliance the way the camera is flip isnt the issue so put the camera in normally, the battery handle in the middle section then the tripod handle on top of it then the mic in the left or right middle section then the same for the extra handle. And you’ll still have space over the other side for smaller stuff🫡
Why do you feel you have to use DJI’s tote bag? I’m still shooting with the pocket 2 and I have mine plus accessories plus a go pro in a small tech bag comfortably.
Can it be used for capturing still images (individually, not from a video stream)? Might it be a very discrete street shooter? Easier to use than cell phone, larger censor….
I’ve had one of these since Nov/2023. It’s generally OK, but frequently doesn’t point where I want it to point. I find that really annoying! Also, the zoom is poor and difficult to use while panning at the same time.
Oh wow, I didn’t think about zoom and pan at the same time. Thanks for letting me know. Have you updated the firmware for the not pointing where you want it to problem?
@@thefilmalliance Mine is as up to date as possible I believe. After spending around £600 on the combo kit I expected perfection. Sadly it’s not as good as I expected. As for picture quality and ease of use it’s great, but I always get pissed off when something doesn’t work quite right.
I’ve owned the 3 pockets and I love them. Be able to film great 4k footage in the street with this small piece of gear that nobody notice is great. The OP2 compared to the OP1 has a better stabilization due to the wider angle I guess but the colors are not nicer. The OP3 have this superb screen,a better dynamic range (less burnt sky) and the battery life seems to have increased. Version after version the case is getting worst. The OP1 case was great. The OP2 was just kept in place by the pressure of the plastic case… The OP3 has a shitty case that doesn’t seem to protect a lot. With the OP2,at the end of a pan,I had to gently turn opposite to stop the pan. With the OP3,I noticed that if U do this, the camera will move in the opposite direction. u must just stop the pan abruptly and do nothing else. I would like to try the insta360 ace pro with this new rotating screen that makes it easy to use discreetly. The OP is really a great tool.
@thefilmalliance yes but I am not a cinematic videast ,I just use the battery stick. I just make holiday movies and I dont even use the DJI mic 2 included in the combo...a pity!
Hello, thanks to share this wonderful video. A need a questio please: I do video editing, I have used and continue to use the Log a lot with other more professional cameras and I am very satisfied. But I don't like the D-Log M very much. I see it as too blurry, not clear-cut. I don't know how to explain it in English, since it's not my native language. Anyway I shoot only in 4K 50p. I like the Normal Profile instead. But yes, with the D-Log M you can make the clip whatever you want. I only make documentaries around the world. Please can you tell me if you like the Normal profile or the D-Log M profile better in the Pocket 3? Thank you for your answer.
That’s hard to say. I can tell you this. I think the normal color profile is outstanding and I wouldn’t hesitate using the normal color profile on client work. But if I was doing some type of cinematic narrative work, then I would use D-log M. Then I can ensure that all of my clips will match up 100% in post production. I cannot guarantee all the clips will match up if you use the normal color profile.
@@thefilmalliance Please, I'd like to understand well. How did you configure the Pocket 3 with D-Log M? Did you put the definition and video noise at -2 (both)? I chose -2 only for Normal profile but not for D-Log M Profile because it is lacking video definition. I only make documentaries in 4K..Can you give me an advice because maybe I didn't configured it fine. Thanks again.
Straight to D-LogM ? No consideration for HLG, which is also 10-bit.? The spec for D-LogM has not been published, so color grading is to some extent guesswork. Davinci Resolve does not have a Color Space Transform for it, for example. On the other hand, HLG is well understood. Color space and dynamic range are just as good as anything that D-LogM can provide, and in my experience it is much easier to deal with, and the results are just as good. I'm a recent convert to HLG, Rec2100.
My problem is not everyone has HLG monitors so SD viewers will see major over exposure on their screens. HLG is more of a future profile when most people have upgraded screens - at least that’s what I think.
Most people don't possess a D-LogM monitor either. In fact they can't because the D-LogM spec has not been published, unlike the HLG spec which has. It's Rec2100. You shouldn't be advising people if you don't know or understand what this means. If you know how to set this up in Davinci Resolve, then you will be able to grade the full 10-bit color and dynamic range properly and without guesswork and still output it to Rec709 or whatever color space you want ot need.
Not necessarily. The FX3 / A7Siii are considered “old” but are still selling well and there still isn’t anything on the market that performs better. The OP3 is going to be relevant for a long time - it’s seriously an awesome piece of kit.
Would it be insane to consider using this along with the DJI Air 3 for my upcoming first-ever short film project? I feel like all i really need to be able to work my DaVinci Resolve magic, is 10 bit 4k footage, with a bit of bokeh in the background for close-up shots. This seems to fit the bill perfectly while being affordable as a starting point.
By most accounts, this is a great camera, and those accounts are what keeps it on backorder. But it strikes me (some have said this) as rather fragile. Fragile is one thing I would find unacceptable in a carry-around camera. And I really have to wonder, can a single camera really be the end all and be all of cameras? Can it be a serious videographer's only camera? Nobody would call me that, but color me doubtful. If I were to buy this thing, the creator package is definitely, 100% the way I would go. Still, there are times when getting all that ambient sound is desirable, and the onboard mics are good enough for those situations.
I don't use the plastic cover, creators pouch or extra mount preferring to use in action cam mount style cage (additionally the "cage" covers the SD slot which is unprotected) with ARCA plate. Then, I bought a cheap snap hard over on Amazon. Also, installed screen protector. I found ND & Mist that will let the camera close fully with 1 filter attached (not stacked). I just leave the Mist on all the time. Maybe they'll have a "pro" model sometime with weather sealing and rugged handling (maybe even triple lenses like their drone). I'd like to see them add the ability to embed LUTs or Creative Styles (like in Sony). An area that I have not seen much coverage on is the MIMO app for edits, etc. with some research I found that you can record in D-Log, import & apply the D-Log ro Rec709 Conversion LUT in the app. This is my first Pocket 3, so this may have been a feature from before, but it's really cool!
All great info. Love the idea about importing luts and/or creative styles. That would be amazing. Editing with the mimo app is not something I considered. Thanks for the heads up
I was thinking of picking one of these up but I’m poor again after preordering a X100VI 😂 That’s if I can ever get it from all those preorders Fuji had.
I have the 2 and im not gonna upgrsde st all i have a great phone camera and yes its not 10 bit but 10 bit with an in sensor isny wortb the upgrade ik saving for a s52x
It's crazy how good the OP3 is. I wish I saw it before I bought the ZV-1 again. I've been blown away by the quality of the footage. I hope I can pick it up soon. It would be great as a location scouting camera for my projects.
What a great point about location scouting. As far as ZV-1, I’d say OP3 beats it out in stabilization but ZV-1 has way more controllability with all its buttons and exposure tools
Concerning the ND-filters, you can perfectly leave them on. If you put the camera in het plastic protection case the camera lens will be downward facing. Therefore its protected. And yes it's an amazing little device.
With the Pocket 1 and 2, you were able to run a cable from the pocket to the smart phone and it would connect directly to the app on the phone. Not sure why they took that away. Maybe they could put it back in with a firmware update .
@@thefilmalliance Have gone through it now and I definitely think it was a great help and worth it, but I wish you would elaborate more on how the ND filters would affect the presets. Maybe if you had a video dedicated to using ND filters and how your would make the settings different in the presets to accommodate those ND filters. I mean this course is teaching how to go into pro settings and not only shooting in auto, but why not have a dedicated video that covers the full potential of ND filters, when ND filters is closely related to making cinematic video and a more professional approach.
