Osmosis is a process of movement of solvents through a semi-permeable membrane from a region of lower solute concentration to higher solute concentration. In case of plants, the plants absorb water from the soil through their roots. The root hairs absorb the bulk of the water. These root hairs act as a semipermeable barrier, allowing water molecules (solvent) to move from a high concentration (soil) to a low concentration (groundwater) (roots). In the human body osmosis regulates the flow of dissolved solids, liquids, and gases across the semipermeable membrane of cells that selectively allows certain substances to pass in and out of the cell, This also assists in releasing toxic metabolic waste products such as urea.
Hi. Please see if you have followed the steps of the experiment clearly : 1). See if you just added water outside the potato and not inside the potato 2). See if you added only salt in the potatoes and no water with the salt 3). Water outside the potatoes has no solute mixed in it. Hence it is said to be Hypotonic 4). The area inside the potato is hypertonic as it has high level of salt in it 5). Hence due to Osmosis , water will try to pass through the semi permeable membrane to an area where there are less number of free water molecules and hence water will enter the raw potato with salt .
