You had me at “Innsmouth”. I’m a huge HPL fan and have added themes of cosmic horror into my current and past campaigns. I’m going to pick this one up and incorporate it. Thanks for another great review, Captain

Man, I've bought more modules this week than I've bought in a year lol. I picked this one up, Secret of Bone Hill, Treasure Hunt, and Sailors on the Starless Sea. Seriously, thank you for these DM oriented reviews. You have no idea how much they help inspire me =)

No mention of Dagon? A influential deity in both HPLs and REHs writing? And Mother Hydra's consort?

In Hyperborea, this is a Kthulhu Cult. But in your world you can make it whatever you want.

The town section is a little too direct a lift of the Shadows plot and structure for me, right down to the town drunk as info source. The exploration of the islets and the delve in the temple's more original but I'd still rather have seen something besides Deep Ones or Sahaugin as the cause of a small port town's problems for a change. Even something as basic as reskinning the fishmen to thematically similar critters that transform into, say, crustaceans would be a breath of fresh air (or water, if your gills have fully formed). Or go farther afield and have the monsters be something more innovative - parasitic seaweed using the townsfolk as hosts, dark fey sirens luring people away and replacing them with glamoured lookalikes, undead and/or constructs from a sunken civilization who've been woken by the local fishermen and are coming ashore looking for artifacts that were dredged up. Anything but more fishmen, y'know? Art and printing quality sure is nice, though. Top marks for those.

This is next on my list. I’m going to use it in my Numenera campaign, with some old Gamma World material. “Chaos provides”.

Lovecraft has always been my favorite author, I burrowed from many of his stories running Ravenloft campaigns back in the 90's. I should have never shown my groups his stories as they thought I was some great storyteller until then LoL.

I really hate how the core books are never available.

You're frustration is certainly understandable. Not the PLAYER'S book is still available for $29.99. During the pandemic, orders for the main rulebook stepped unexpectedly and that's why its now sold out. The KS for the 3rd printing completed (very successfully) and Jeff said he's going to make sure he orders enough this time. Hope that helps a little.

this is the downside of a business model based around having people pay for an item before its created/published. Very low quantities outside of fulfillment typically. Very frustrating to me, as I do not pay up front, as I like to browse product on a shelf. My LCS tries to fund some Kickstarts, to stock their shelves.
@captcorajus
@captcorajus 2 года назад
@@cthulhupthagn5771 That is NOT the problem in THIS case. Sorry. The Player's Book, which contains all the game rules, but not the monsters or setting material is STILL available. The MAIN book was produced in quantities sufficient to allow it to remain in stock until the next KS. However, due to the pandemic, sales of the books increased until they were sold out earlier than expected. Jeff explained this during my interview with him. Certainly SOME publishers may not make available enough inventory beyond fulfillment of the KS, but that is NOT the case here. The popularity of the game, combined with the fact that people were sitting at home with nothing to do resulted in the books selling out earlier than expected.

I used a couple adventures from this line for, of all this, Stars Without Number. They mixed well and had just enough cosmic-ness and whiffs of lost technology that they fit my world pretty darn well. low key one of the belter OSR adventure lines out there. I'm more of a B/X fan so I haven't given the rule book aa loook but the new edition is hard to ignore.

I think that if you have 5E players you're trying to entice to the OSR, Hyperborea is a great option. There are 26 character classes, which means a lot of great and interesting options, but unlike 5E its not superhero levels of abilities.

Looks great although for anyone I play with, it would probably not be a "mystery". A run down port town with weird looking people? Deep Ones for sure.

Sometimes I feel like Mullen is over represented. There's lots of amazing illustrators in the OSR scene that need to be seen more.
