someone literally pointed out my acne today at con and told me to never cosplay that character again unless i have clear skin bc acne apparently makes it look "awful". yeah okay i'll just tell my skin to clear up then. as if it's that easy to get rid of it🙄

I think you should ask these instead: “Is your cosplay bought?” = “Did you make your cosplay? It looks great!” “Who are you supposed to be?” = “I like your cosplay! Who are you dressing as?” Any (not weird) question is fine as long as it’s asked nicely, go with the more positive clause. if you really want to be careful compliment then first.

“You can’t cosplay this character because you’re not their skin tone/race or gender.” Cosplay who you want, it doesn’t matter who it is. You’re allowed to cosplay anyone no matter who you are, or which character you’re cosplaying.

I think that asking "who you're supposed to be?" isn't that bad, cuz someone maybe thinks that you cosplay is amazing, but still don't know the character. And if you ask the nicely, I think it's not that insulting.

I hate the “Bought costumes doesn’t count as cosplay” if someone simply doesn’t have the skills and the time for making a costume or the environment ,like me, let them buy the costume. I can’t simply sew or learn how to while my family is against me cosplaying and I have to sneak out the house to go to a convention. So no you can’t expect me to make my own costume.

You should never say to a cosplayer that they can't cosplay someone because they're of a different race, they have a different body shape, or they're of a different gender. Cosplaying is for everyone and everyone can cosplay whoever they want :)

Honestly I don't see how it's rude to ask if you are something/someone and get it wrong. Plenty of anime characters look similar or maybe they just have not seen/played the show or game your cosplaying from. And believe me the person who got it wrong is probably more embarrassed then you are upset.

Why would asking which character you’re cosplaying a bad question? Are people just supposed know every character out there? If anything that opening question is a good icebreaker to meeting new people.

Personally “is that homemade or store bought?” is a compliment and I get how people guessing your cosplay wrong could be annoying but someone politely asking isn’t hurting anything.

You also shouldn't say : "Oh you can't cosplay a boy, you're a girl! / You can't cosplay a girl, you're a boy!" Or "You can't cosplay this person because your chest isn't big enough." It's just rude- I've had both of these things said to me and it makes you feel like crap ;/

I don't get what's wrong with asking someone who they are or if they made their costume? I would ask someone if they made something so I can praise them for their work. And I don't know who every anime character is, so yes, I might ask you who you are...

Does this sound like an insult? Because I wasn't rude. The cosplayer was adorable and was such a cool person! She dressed as Yui from Kill la Kill and I hate her in the anime. I approached her and said, "First of all, your cosplay and you in it is absolutely adorable and amazing! But... I hate the character so so much!" She laughed and played cool and said, "Yeah, I hate me too. Want a photo?" We hung out after that. XD I was dressed as Honey-Sempai from Ouran High School Host Club.

“You can’t cosplay ________ they’re not black!” It really doesn’t matter. At the end of the day cosplay is what makes people happy, and a character is just a character. Let people do what makes them happy 💕

For me in particular is “you cant cosplay as the opposite gender” is really rude because you can cosplay as whatever and whoever you want!!

The whole made a cosplay/bought a cosplay thing is stupid. Some of us like to buy cosplays because first of all we have no access to materials and can't sew. There are other reasons of course but I don't want to go into a full on rant listing them all. It's really amazing that the person decided to actually make the cosplay because holy crap that takes time but seriously??? We're all cosplayers no matter what. Also inregard to another person in the video talking about how someone said that something about the cosplay is wrong and it made them feel degraded, I totally agree with them. I met a popular youtuber and they didn't necessarily mean the comment in a bad way but they said that my character's knife was a different size and called it inaccurate in a kind of snarky way. Nothing against them though as there was another youtuber that was quite rude about my cosplay (as I'm a bit of a newb and it was very loud I wasn't sure on the direction they were telling me) which was worse.

I feel like the “what is that from?” Or “what are you?” Isn’t always rude depending on context. If somebody comes up to say you made a really sick cosplay and asks what it’s from that just means your effort was enough to spark someone else’s interest in something you love.

I disagree strenuously with the question about "Who are you supposed to be?" - I'd phrase if differently, and certainly make sure to ask why any particular character. But let's be honest - there are so many new fandoms and properties out there it is simply impossible to know them all unless that's what you do.

Something that’s annoying is like ‘you didn’t put enough effort into this’ because people will put so much effort into cosplays and to be told it doesn’t look that way is just heartbreaking Or if you don’t have that much money for certain things and someone says you didn’t put in enough effort and you’re like ‘I put in as much effort as I could’

Some of them, I agree with. Others I don't. Maybe it's a culture-thing. I personally think asking; 'Did you make that' is not insulting. People might get a sad feeling once they have to go; 'No, I did not' but as someone that crafts, I am eager to learn from others and will ask how props are made. If you really feel thát sad about not having crafted your own props, that's your problem, not mine.

Question. Why shouldn't we ask who they're supposed to be? Like, if I see a cool looking cosplay but I don't know that anime/manga it's from, am I not supposed to ask questions about it?

Excuse me, but the "who are you?" one is valid because sometimes people have never even seen the character. How should you ask them then? Maybe "I don't think I've ever seen that character, who are you?" I CAN'T KNOW EVERYTHING! I've only been to a cosplay event once and that was in 2007, so I've never actually asked.

I hope that in one of these days, one or a group of people will dress up as sticks of deodorant and chase anyone that stinks.

I was cosplaying Deku. I’m a woman. Some dude behind me goes “Isnt that stupid anime character a male” I stood there frozen. Some other people who were cosplaying Todoroki and Mina came over and stood up for me. We always go to conventions together ever since that day. They’re the best friends I could ever home for.

Literally someone said that "MY face is too innocent and round to cosplay bakugou" And also "bakugou isn't black" And also "HEY NIGGAGOU" smh

I'm fine with people getting the guess wrong. Especially when the convention is something as broad as "anime," or "video games." I don't like "what are you supposed to be?" That's just a shitty way to ask it, and there are millions of other ways to say it.

Dude most of these cosplays are legit reaallly good but sadly the thing for me is that I don't cosplay SPECIFICALLY because- A) Body type B) skin type Yeah...I'm one of THOSE insecure dweebs 😅

In my opinion asking if something was made or bought can just depend on the person or with how they say it. My friend who had never been to a con before was surprised that people make their own costumes and was really impressed with the work that people do. Also it may be taken as a compliment because the work may seem so well done that it looks professional.

Some of these I agree with. However, there's a few things I don't in here. (1) I truely don't see anything wrong with a person to come up and ask what character I (or any other) is cosplaying as. Not everyone is gonna know the character you're dressed as. Let alone, some characters can look similar to others despite being from different shows/movies/games. (2) Furthermore, it shouldn't be offensive to ask if your costume is hand made or purchased. The person may be complementing how well made and/or detailed your costume is. There are some neat hand made costumes out there and it shouldn't be offensive for one to ask if you personally made it (despite if you did or not). (3) Lastly, criticisms shouldn't be a problem either. This is how we are to help one another to improve ourselves. Now, if someone simply was ridiculing or insulting your costume then it is an issue given that they're just being rude. Again, these are just my opinions on some of the mentioned issues in this vid.

I don't see how criticism is a bad, thing, even at a convention. like Yeah it's rude if you go "wow you're missing x piece or prop" in a rude way, but if they're taking pictures and being friendly and they go "Hey btw, this is missing" or "Hey that's on crooked" or "Hey that's about to fall off, they're helping you, I'd much rather someone say that than my costume fall apart on me or keep making a mistake or something. it's how yih get better

Positivity is good, yeah, we know it. But being curious isn't bad, and giving ADVICE isn't bad either. I used to live in a small town, were the cons were quite small but the people there was really supportive and nice, I cosplayed as Alice from AMR and there were kids who wanted to take a photo with me, but then they asked me what character I was cosplaying. They were just curious, they thought I did a good job with the cosplay and they wanted a photo with because of that even though they didn't know the character, and I felt happy because that was my own accomplishment. Then there was this person who asked me why I was wearing gray contact lenses if Alice has green eyes, and they started to talk about how I should do my makeup for her. But it was all in a nice context, no snarky comments nor disrespectful in any way and I took their advice because if I was honest with myself, I didn't knew anything about makeup and I told them my eyes were naturally brown and I didn't have money to buy green ones. Some cosplayers need to calm down and have more patience and be nicer overall, I've met a few at Comic Con that were quite arrogant, to the point that I saw one cosplayer who made a really wonderful work, and I wanted to ask him what materials did he use, but he inmediately shut me down because "I was looking for imperfections". Wtf?? But anyways, cosplayers, if someone talks to you in a good way, please don't be rude in return. And if someone wants to ask/give advice to a cosplayer then do it, but be nice about it.

I like when I get criticism. helps to do better next time. I let everyone play with my props too,I could always make another one.
