William SHAKESPEARE (1554 - 1616)
Othello is the story of a cross-cultural romance between the title character, a noble moor who is a general in the Venetian army, and Desdemona, a beautiful and virtuous Venetian lady. The newly-married couple fall prey to the machinations of Iago, Othello's jealous ensign, who plots to destroy their union.

Act III Reading Questions 1. Why does Cassio bring musicians? What is Othello’s response to them? Cassio brings musicians to try to get Othello in a good mood but Othello does not like it at all. 2. What responses do Iago and Othello have to seeing Cassio leave Desdemona? Iago says that what they just saw was suspicious after Othello initially thought nothing of it. 3. How successfully does Desdemona plead for Cassio? What is Othello's response to Desdemona as she leaves? Desdemona succeeds in convincing Othello to give back Cassio’s position 4. Why doesn't Iago simply tell Othello right away that Desdemona and Cassio are having an affair? Iago wants Othello to come to the conclusion himself to keep his reputation as trustworthy. 5. What thing does Emilia find and give to Iago? What does Iago intend to do with it? Emilia finds Desdemonas handkerchief and gives it to Iago, Iago plans to leave it in Cassios house for Othello to find in order for him to believe she is cheating on him for real. 6. What is Iago's reply when Othello demanded proof of his wife's disloyalty? Iago reacts angrily and essentially reverses the roles, saying that he is angry for being so honest and should have not said a word. 7. What does Othello decide and command at the end of Scene 3? Othello makes Iago his lieutenant and orders Cassio be killed. 8. How likely is it that Othello will keep an open mind until he has seen real proof? How much have Iago's suggestions about Desdemona's "nature" worked on Othello? It is not likely that Othello will have an open mind up until he sees proof, he is very convinced she is cheating on him. Iago’s manipulations up to this point are extremely effective and work well. 9. What is Emilia's relationship with Iago? Desdemona? Emilia is Iagos wife, and was sent to accompany Desdemona but is deceiving her(lying about the handkerchief) for Iago. 10. Identify and explain two examples of irony found in Act III, Scene 3. A first example of irony is Othello seeking out and wanting to kill Cassio, not knowing he’s carrying out Iagos revenge for him. A second example is when Iago is made the lieutenant by Othello and swears loyalty while the audience knows that he is lying. 11. How does Iago use Othello’s racial differences against him? Iago makes Othello think Desdemona does not like him because of that. 12. How is the dropping of the handkerchief ironic? Desdemona treasures the handkerchief but lost it. 13. What, according to Othello, is the history of the handkerchief (3.4.65-79)? Is Othello telling the truth here? What else might he be doing? According to Othello, the handkerchief was used by his mother to make his father love her so much. Othello might not be telling the truth and could be saying it to guilt Desdemona. 14. What does the argument in 3.4.89-115 show about both Othello and Desdemona? The argument shows that Othello firmly believes that Desdemona is cheating on him and her shock at the way he’s acting towards her. 15. What is Emilia's view of men (3.4.120-.24)? How justified is she? Emilia believes all men are jealous and with rage, she is justified by how Iago acts and has treated her. 16. Who is Bianca? What is her relationship to Cassio? What does he ask her to do? What is her emotional response? Sound familiar? Bianca is a prostitute that Cassio slept with, he asks her to make a copy of the handkerchief which upsets her because she thinks he got it from another woman he slept with. 17. Who had the handkerchief at the end of Act 3? Why? Bianca because Cassio gave it to her when he wanted the copy. I’ve finished reading othello today, the rest of the answers will be on their respective acts within some minutes
