He would have been safe before he flinched away from the tag. The moment he did that he was out if he didn't take off. Since time wasn't called, him stepping off the bag after making contact meant that he was still fair game. that's why the hidden ball trick works. At that point he realized the problem and alertly took off back to second because it was better than getting easily tagged out if he stayed at third. Good thinking on the kid after the initial mistake. But next time don't flinch away from a hard tag.

The real answer is his coach actually never played baseball and didn’t teach them. I played D1 football and coached my son in his whole life through HS. There are a lot of bad coaches out there. Just my opinion
