Gradeall has developed a 3 pronged approach to dealing with large OTR tyres.
OTR is an abbreviation for Off The Road. These tyres are typically fitted to large earthmovers, quarry equipment, and so on.
OTR tyres are typically very heavy usually due to the nature of the machines they are fitted to, they are also large and consume a lot of physical space. Moving them is difficult as a forklift is required and very few of them fit into a lorry trailer.
Gradeall has developed what it believes to be an affordable solution to these tyres the 3 machines are as follows:
1: OTR Splitter: To cut the tyre into two halves.
2: OTR Sidewall Cutter: To cut the sidewalls from the halves of the tyre, and also then to cut the sidewall again to isolate the bead. Leaving sidewall and tread sections separated.
3: OTR Shear: This machine chops the remaining parts of the tyre into smaller segments, this includes chopping the bead section into smaller segments.
Once this is done the tyre will occupy less physical space. However, Gradeall has tested a MK2 tyre baler with these segments and found that 5 OTR tyres fitted into a single PAS108 spec baler. With the MK3 tyre baler, this could be potentially more. There is a significant reduction in volume when a tyre bale is compared side by side against 5 OTR tyres.
Gradeall regards their equipment as the first step in tyre recycling. The completed bale can then be transported to a location where further recycling can occur, shredding, granulation, or pyrolysis are all viable options for these tyres. Whereas before this size of tyre simply would not have fitted into a shredder and the bead would have caused expedited wear on moving parts now it should be possible to cut it down much easier.
