Your audio is cleaner than most of the other SCUBA presentations I’ve have heard on RU-vid. Two years ago I had intentions on dong exactly this in a more compact form factor and for my Ocean Reef Neptune IDM. I originally considered using an OTS Delrin Buddy Phone case as you have shared in this video but after receiving an old used unit from an eBay offer I was quickly disappointed in the sheer BULK of that case! My plan was to only record audio with no need to transmit to other divers. I intended to use one of the smallest industry standard audio recorders the Tascam DR-10L professional audio recorder. I later got a Garmin inReach mini SCUBA dive case but it was slightly too small to house the Tascam. I was able to use a dermal rotary tool to remove some of the inner plastic but that really reduced the thickness of the case thus reducing the cases integrity under pressure. The Garmin in reach mini dive case being very small is ideal and having clear plastic you can actually see the status of your audio recorder while inside the waterproof enclosure. From the start my intent was to start the audio recording before splashing and to marry the audio tracks with my parallax video in post production. Fairly simple to do being that no one can see your mouth actually moving with a full face mask on so even if you’re a little out of sync no one is really going to notice. I planned on using the Ocean Reef underwater microphone and passing the audio cord through the plastic SCUBA case with some marine grade potting compound to keep the case completely waterproof. If anyone out there wants to machine a really nice super small to depth waterproof clamshell Delrin case to house the Tascam DR-10L audio recorder by all means reach out to me directly. Sorry 3-D printing is not going to be durable enough for this application, I won’t even consider that as an option. 🤙 🤿 Cheers, #SeattleRingHunter Jeff Morgan
Nice one! Top gear. Very cool video and nice You got to narrate after all!!! And by the way, kudos for the straight on camera tech - presenting skill. 👌🏼 💙
Been waiting for this! Mine arrived on island yesterday and excited to start playing with it! John has been so helpful with me and I am trying the DIY solution with GoPro initially as you talk about to see how it goes but will move to other system I think eventually.
Thank you Jeff for this inside. Very interesting. 🙏 been planning on getting certified with the Full Face Mask. Hopefully it’ll still happen this year. 😉
For the DIY option, what all do you need to purchase to fully make it work other than the GoPro stuff. Does the audio recording system and the earphone piece come in one thing, or do you need to purchase multiple things?
Great question. Sorry for the slow response. To record audio the DIY way we mentioned in the video, you'd need the Guardian Full Face Mask (FFM), the earphone/microphone assemblies, the GoPro mount for the FFM, and some heavy-duty velcro to secure one of the earphones to the back of the GoPro. For more information on doing this, you can reach out to John Hott at OTS (www.oceantechnologysystems.com/about-ots). He's a wealth of knowledge there. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Okay I’m racking my brain so maybe you can help me. I just wanna record myself underwater. All I need is the mic and the housing for the recorder? The mic is the missing piece. Where do I get that?
We’re using a microphone from Ocean Technology Systems. Here’s a link to their product page. Their support team is also been very helpful, and can answer any technical questions. www.oceantechnologysystems.com/product-category/wireless/
@@TritonsRealm For the life of me, I can't get a hold of anyone to answer my questions. Do they sell just the mic and housing. I already have a digital recorder.
Give their email support a try (ots@otscomm.com). They do sell just the mic and the housing. The digital recorder we have is a Sony we already had as well. Hope this helps.
Hey Justin, we don’t have a video that uses the GoPro audio option, but I think John Hott does on his channel. In general I think the GoPro option works pretty well, but the quality is a little muted. Hope this helps.
This is the Garmin inReach mini case I speak of to house the Tascam audio recorder. Too bad it wasn’t a little bit larger from Garmin so no modifications were necessary… ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-JXMWTgkVvcA.html Cheers, #SeattleRingHunter Jeff Morgan
