Some people, like Primitive Pathways and Wild North, use dried hides, basically rawhide pelts to do this. The pelt then has a natural rigidity for structure and is resistant to tearing and punctures. Definitely won't be as supple as tanned leather but you wouldn't need to add a structural dowel to it.

I was wondering if you could show a video on how you skinned and tanned this hide without cutting it down the stomach. Good video!

that way of skinning is called "sacking" and you just cut across from hind leg to hind leg and pull the hide down.

Yes! We have a few videos in the snow. It is hard because this is the high-desert and we do not get much.
