@WannabeCanadianDev
@WannabeCanadianDev 6 лет назад
We're still after all in a context where Wars Are Fought; I think Bismark can be respected for his pragmatism in trying to come up with a sustainable world order that would endure; he wasn't intended to annex France (Although Prussia still occupied a great deal of Polish territory). As 10Tabris01 says, there's plenty of respectable reasons for that era to fight wars; people die and war is hell, and not a lot of people had experienced the things General Sherman did; but in terms of desire to see a unified Germany that wouldn't ever again feel the deprivations of the 30 Years War; I think calling Bismark a warmonger is a bit harsh. Consider how it was mentioned in a previous video Bismark was very much against unnecessary wars and bloodshed without a good cause or justification. He didn't delight in war for the sake of warfare; but a more Clauswitzian take where the point of war was diplomacy by other means, and to be won decisively and overwhelmingly as to not be drawn out.

The reason that the French was so pummeled despite having all the odds was that the German technology was far superior than what the French would have conceived. At the time of that battle, the French was still using barrel loading cannons as artillery while the Prussians were using breach-loading cannons called the Krupp cannon. They could fire so many rounds within a minute of up to 15 against the French's 8, they could pin the French harder and longer. If you ask any historians, they'll all say that the main 3 factor the Prussians won was Bismark & Motke, the train system they utilized massively and the massive Krupp cannon. All these things which we would see on a modern battlefield from Motke and Bismark's War Council to the train transport system to the breach-loaded artillery.

If i remember correctly. French had better rifles (Chassepot) to what Prussian had (Dreyse). But the diffrence was in gas seal and that enabled higher muzzle velocity and longer range, but that didnt give any massive advatage to what prussians had.

I am kind of dissapointed, that the name "Sedan" isn't even mentioned once. This battle is the unifying myth for the German People and during the Willhelmminic Era there was even a special Holiday called "Sedanstag" to remind of that Battle. I see that you described the battle(the first modern use of artillery and the surrender of 100.000 french troops) but i think that the name must be mentioned if you talk about the Franco-Prussian-War in special and the German unification in general. @Frikiman_H
@Frikiman_H 6 лет назад
Darius Niederer Making a long story short: it was a huge confluence of chaos and corruption. It all started with a succession war because the previous king died without a suitable heir (his daughter, Isabel, was only a child at the time). The faction supporting Isabel won, so her mother (and later a general) ruled in her place until she grew up. Isabel was declared an adult at the age of 13, and she was crowned queen. There was a problem with that. She was an idiot. She had no skill to rule and was extremely moody and impressionable. The type of government was technically a constitutional monarchy, but it was actually more akin to a series of dictatorships in which a capricious queen had the final word. The political play was carried out mostly by the military, and there were lots and lots of revolutions, that were stifled with brutal repression. Tensions escalated over time, and the queen was eventually dethroned. What's funny about that is that the governments that came after that were not much better than what I just told you.

A few things about that final battle where they captured Napoleon: It was at Sedan, hence why its called the battle of Sedan. Also, Bismarck desperatly tried to avoid capturing Napoleon, since he knew that would probably lead to a Revolution and a continuation of the war. During the battle, the prussians heavily relied on their new (Krupp-made) artillery to bomb the french into submitting. One medic from a unit from saxony later wrote that when he was tasked to search the area that was targeted by the artillery for survivors, it was the worst thing he had ever seen, most corpses reduced to unrecognizable piles of blood and flesh. He found what he described as a "pile of meat", which he could identify as what was left off a rider and his horse after a direct hit, and pulled put a piece of underwear with the words "General T." out of it. Also, during the time of the german empire, the Day of that battle was a national holiday, and the french became pissed because of it in the 90s one last time because the gigantic equestrian Statue of Emperor Wilhelm I. was put back on it's socket in Koblenz on the anniversary of the battle in 1993.

They and hopefully some of thier allies will be too busy to really fight you amd you can just roll through thier countryside
