Ottorino Respighi - Piano Concerto in A minor (4 MILLION VIEWS TRIBUTE)

There are plentiful ingredients in Respighi’s Piano Concerto. Rhapsodic flourishes, triumphal declamations, huge, dense chords and passages of lyrical contemplation. Written in 1902, when he was in his early twenties, it shows multiple influences, none more than that of the Russia where he was working at this time as principal viola in the Russian Imperial Orchestra. But whilst the concerto successfully embraces the grandiose gestures of Russian orchestral music, it offers neither the originality nor the emotional depth that makes contemporary concertos (by Rachmaninov, for instance) so popular today. It lasts only 24 minutes, but its incoherent, rambling structure makes it seem a great deal longer.

Respighi scriveva sempre e solo in bella copia. Non esistono minute delle sue opere. Finissimo orchestratore. In questo Concerto, tra le pieghe del tardo-romanticismo, ad ascoltare bene c'è qualcosa che lo distingue e che lo porterà alle opere come Fontane e Pini di Roma ecc.

Many moments like 19:02 for example, really sounded like Rachmaninov his piano concerto 3 to me. But then I realised Respighi's concerto was written 5 years earlier. Awsome concerto.

There are so many quotes from other composers that it is absolutely incredible how he maintains his unique style! But clearly, the influence of Liszt A minor concerto is there... just that theme with the cello and the piano accompaniment is so clear. Also pretty sure that Russians took inspirations from this composition (especially for Rach second Concerto). It would be wonderful to deeply analyze this piece!

This is a provincial ,trifling ,subtrire work full of tropes .It is not for even 2 bars interesting in either of its movements . Tey got Tover to record them and Scherbakov knows a lot but unlike Hofmann he can't simply phrase shape a musical dustrock and make it shine with depth or excitement. Thi is my second time listening to these and they didn't grow or reveal anything but trirenessthat were already tired when he wrote this but maybe not for a boy from the country who hadn't had a sophisticated education. Resphighi is about color and evocation .Out of 4 piano converti and 3 violin concerti

The program note in the description really doesn't do the work justice. I get that it's no Grieg or Rach 2 or Tchaik. But whoever wrote that didn't do their homework. Here's where the "issues" lie, of which there are two: First, the work is extremely motivically interwoven. The problem is not that there are too many themes and that it's incoherent and rambling, it's that Respighi conceptually wrote this to be a three-movements-in-one format, but with just as many themes as if it were in three separate movements. Each "movement" section of the work has a first theme, second theme, developments and so on. So the fact that he crammed it all into a continuous movement makes it *seem* like it's rambling and there are too many musical ideas for its own good with too little time devoted to proper development for enjoyment. It may have worked better if he did separate the sections into individual movements. Second, I blame the mixing on the recording. There are plenty of moments where I wish I could hear the orchestra playing more than the piano. Often, they will have melodies or motives that are already well-established, but get buried by the mixing of the piano into the texture. It's a good performance overall by everyone, but does little justice to anyone trying to "pick out" the themes as they fly by. The musical ideas need to be more clearly defined, and whoever conducted the rehearsal process for this recording dropped the ball imo. These criticisms aside, that doesn't mean it'a a poorly written work. Youthful? sure. Is it great? No, but it isn't horrible, either; not by a long shot.

Really forgettable but Scherbakov is a fine player! Thanks for giving us the score ! Not Wonderful to hear this again [my third visit].It will never become popular .I'm surprised at how good Resphighi's piano writing is[he obviously had Scriabin in his library. Resphigi worked in Russia for awhile . He was a professional violinist yet his 3 violin concerti rarely find players(can't be surprised they are as of no import as this is. .Scherbakov learned this and gives it what it needs but a lot of what was new in 1906 sounds childish today . MacDowell and strauss' 1885-86 Burleske fare better and have many many top artists recordings so... but I did enjoy at least 2 hearings of this in various moods . Not forgettable but so little stays in the mind here ...
