Welcome to the city of Ottumwa, Iowa, located in Wapello County in the southeast region of the state. With a population of nearly 25,000, Ottumwa is a Main Street community with a revitalized downtown district, anchored by a Public Library, City Hall, and County Courthouse all part of the National Register of Historic Places.
In the early 1800s the area was populated by several Native Peoples. The Ioway tribe had pre-historic connections to the area; the Mesquaki and Sac were relative newcomers. As westward expansion approached, these tribes were moved to western reservations and Wapello County was opened for a land rush on May 1,1843. By the end of May over 5,000 settlers came to the county to claim land for crop, livestock and homesteading. About 470 acres of the Ottumwa area was settled by investors of the Appanoose Rapids Company. Over time the name of the community changed from Louisville to Ottumwa. By 1844, Ottumwa was declared the county seat of Wapello County and began to develop as a city.
The population of Ottumwa boomed from 1,632 to over 5,000 from 1860 to 1870 and continued to grow to a peak population of 33,871 in 1960 before declining to 25,000 in 2000. The closure of several manufacturing plants in the 1960’s left a shortage of jobs in Ottumwa, forcing many to leave the city. The region also suffered agricultural crises and flooding, further contributing to out-migration. Ottumwa has traditionally served as the trade and economic center of Southeast Iowa. Community leaders realize that it will take vision, commitment and hard work to continue this role into the 21st century.

After you turned the corner from the old movie theaters, you also went back 50 years as everything from that point on is pretty much the same as it was 50-75 years ago- crumbling away. The same as all the streets in that town.

I really enjoyed my time in Ottumwa. I'm sure much has changed since you were there. The city has done a wonderful restoration of the downtown area.

Its a nice place. The worst thing about it is really the weather for me. I've been traveling around the country for 38 days now and Ottumwa is easily one of my favorite places yet. The weather is rainy in the summer, thunderstorms, and extremely humid/dewey. Cars covered in rust even newer ones.

Thanks for sharing! Yes, the Midwest can have some bad weather - Spring and Fall are easily the best times of the year in the Midwest. That's way I travel in the Winter and Summer as I live in the Kansas City area and would rather be somewhere else during the bad weather times.

Whats the air like in this town? Does anybody know? I mean, basically fresh, or "factory stinky"? Looks like a nice, clean place to go out for long walks...
@WanderingWalksofWonder
@WanderingWalksofWonder 4 месяца назад
It really is clean smelling - it is in the heart of Iowa's agri business area - but the town is lovely to explore.

@@WanderingWalksofWonder Ah! 😃Thank you so much for responding and letting me know! I'm a fresh air freak, retired, who likes to go out for long walks nearly every day. A stinky, industrial smelling atmosphere can really ruin all appeal for a town...no matter how good it looks. My town of Two Rivers WI is lovely, but the air quality has been rated an "F" due to the air flow pattern along Lake Michigan, coming up from Chicago and Milwaukee. Yikes. Thanks again so much. Am considering relocating, and Ottumwa seems pretty nice. Not too "fancy", but that's to my liking. Your video has been very helpful.👍

The number of store fronts that appear to be empty and or abandoned speaks very poorly for the this dying town

Not sure what the point of this video is. With no commerce taking place, no pedestrians and no activity, the town looks like a vacant Hollywood set piece for an invasion of the Walking Dead. If you could provide some history to the tour, pointing out buildings and what they once were... because clearly the city was once vibrant, I think you would have an interesting tour. Otherwise it looks abandoned. A city with no life is creepy.

Thanks for the feedback. That video is a few years old. Starting this year, I have added more narration about the history of the places walked - including the history of the town and key historic buildings.
