it's not just her, Chinese gymnasts have always been fragile like this. Look at MAO Yi's awesome FX routines at 2016 Chinese Nationals versus her disastrous routines at the Rio OGs. FAN Ye's 2003 WCs routine won gold by a big margin, at the Athens OGs she didn't even make the final, then she tanked at the 2005 WCs as well. And LIU Tingting's 2019 WCs UB and BB routines in the TF were disasters as well. It's likely a mental issue due to the culture of the Chinese team and the way it trains gymnasts. LIANG Chow apparently tried to change it for Tokyo but wasn't successful.
her routine composition is also efficient and plays to Chinese gymnasts' strengths: only 3 tumbling lines to conserve energy, a high value opening line (she could consider adding a punch front for 0.2 CV more), 3 high value spins (the Gomez is always risky though, maybe a double Y spin is better) and some leaps. It's painful to see other Chinese gymnasts waste energy on C rated saltos which just don't score highly enough.
@Victoria Coria Re the double L, the COP allows you to hold the free leg with your hand and bend the knee, which should make it easier to complete. Henrietta Onodi used this technique back in the early 90s so it's not new. It always puzzles me why more gymnasts don't use that technique. LIU Tingting did it so why don't other Chinese gymnasts do it?
