It's another plot hole. I guess it was something they wanted to explore later but then they decided to add just new stuff. Same thing with lily and maleficent. Instead of exploring the search after her father, they just added new characters and explored them instead.
I love once upon a time in general but honestly the show should've ended with season 3A cause afterwards the writing became very very different, sometimes even really bad.
