It's not venom, they're stinging cells called nematocysts, but you got the right idea. These cells fire off a tiny harpoon into whatever touches them, that's the stinging part.
As someone who’s been stung by a man of war jellyfish can confirm it hurts like a bitch. It was a bad summer. (Edit: thanks for the likes, most I’ve ever gotten!)
When i was 6 i went on a school trip to the beach and the principal strictly said not to touch any animals in the ocean, i found a "rock" and went to show my mom and she screamed "------ PUT THAT DOWN NOW" it was actually a grey dead jellyfish.
@@fishpog7685 Praya Dubia is not a jellyfish. They're more closely related to Portuguese Man o' War. Unlike jellyfish, which are single animals, Praya Dubia and Portuguese Man o' War are colonies of animals living in symbiosis.
Fun story: when I was maybe 4 or 5, my family and I went to a beach in Charleston South Carolina. We noticed that there was a purple flag near the life gaurd, but we didn't mind to much about it because we didn't kniw what it ment. Turns out it means that there are potentially dangerous animals in the water like sharks and jellyfish. Fast forward a bit to where a jellyfish tentacle that had detached from the jellyfish had found its way up my swim trunks, landed in that spot where the inner part of the left leg attaches to the rest of my body (so in between my left leg and my penis), and stung me. I got kind of paralyzed for a moment and fell into the water. Once I regained the ability to move shot myself back up to the surface and tried to open my eyes to see what had just happened, but when I did, it stung me again. This happened about ten times until my dad eventually found me and took me to shore.
@@kami7028he clearly states that it landed between his left leg and his "penis" so basically he's a man. Anyways have a fabulous day, I didn't mean to correct you this way but I'm just obviously pointing it out in case you missed reading that one.
I was stung by a jellyfish last year. It was the most painful thing I’ve ever experienced in my life. It was a sea neattle jellyfish, so it wasn’t as bad as a blue bottle. But I did end up having a small seizure because I was screaming in pain and horror It was terrifying for everyone, especially my dad (which who I was on the trip to North Carolina with). Im ok now but I have a scar and will for the rest of my life.
This cameraman is not invincible... he is banished from the order and must return his hat and cloak by the end of the year. Edit: changed group to order, thought it sounded better
@@lollardismontop1026 wellllll theres only one place that distributes the cloaks and its in the middle of nowhere.... gotta give him a bit of time to hand it in and be slapped by the camfather
I've been stunk by a blue bottle. My daughter thought it was a toy and picked it up. But I've been swimming and had long jelly wrap around my legs and I've had the tiny ones get me a bunch too. Be careful out there.
Kinda like snakes where their nervous system makes them automatically move somewhere to attack for a faster reaction time and dodging threats, meaning when they are dead jt can get triggered and bite you (and kill you) their heads can also do that separated from their body so you just aee a head tryinf ro bite smt, ans thrir body jusr fkyinf towards your arm (kinda like when a chicken runs around when you cut its head off)
I was in the Mediterranean Sea where I got stung. It felt like a piece of my leg was ripped off and I immediately began crying. I was shocked to see that my leg was still in tact with a minor scar.
I saw some of these at the surface of the water when I was on a cruise once. I was so confused at this ginormous round orange thing in the middle of the ocean lol and there were a group of about 3 of them if I remember correctly (I was a kid). Pretty cool to see one up close here.
It's actually an extremely interesting adaptation, their stingers work like mechanical triggers on a microscopic scale that then shoot out spring loaded poison barbs! No living tissue required!
@@BeepBoopIV oh yeah we are fine. But it was like spread across the area we were at and we all got stung a little but only 1 of us got stung badly. But she is fine and only has a little scar on her leg
@@animatedcreature983 It's the opposite. Man o' War are very dangerous and can kill you. Most jellyfish species hurt, but generally can't kill. Lion's Mane Jellyfish venom will generally pose little risk to your life unless you somehow got trapped in the tentacles while you are swimming. Even then, he cause of death is usually drowning from panic, not by the venom.
Peoples lack of knowledge for aquatic animals is amazing, especially because these people are the ones at the beach, whale watching, deep sea diving, swimming with sharks, etc.
I did suffer a really big jellyfish sting when I was 15 and since then I always carry just a really small bottle of 20% vinegar acid in my backpack when I go to the beach. 20% vinegar acid destroys the jellyfish nettle that got into your skin. I still got a scar on my wrist because I haven’t treated that spot with that acid, and that was 16years ago. It reminds me of the oceans but if I hadn’t treated the rest, my whole arm would have been a big jellyfish nettle scar.
How do grown ass adults not know this? Dead things can still hurt you. Look how the severed head of a snake can still bite you. Read a book just once people.
STORYTIMEEEEE ok so when i was abt 7 years old my whole moms side of the family went on a family vacation for the summer in north carolina (there were abt 20 of us in total) and the house we rented had a beach near by and we went there at dusk to make a bonfire and fly kites. well there were a couple small dead jellyfish washed up on the shore, but we kinda ignored them bc we weren’t even going in the water anyway. at one point my brother had to use the bathroom and asked me to hold his kite while he was gone, and i was holding on the that kite as if it was my only hope. anyway, my oldest cousin mariah, who was abt 14 at the time, grabbed one of the jellyfish and put it on my shoulder when i wasn’t looking. she didn’t know they could still sting after they died. i screamed bc i felt a rlly hard pinch on my shoulder and watched the jellyfish slide off. i let go of the kite without even realizing it and started crying uncontrollably bc i was only 7. i was ok in the end, mariah felt rlly bad and my brother was mad i let go of his kite
Depending on the jellyfish, it'll either just barley tickle or poke you, or it'll hurt like hell, and Will hurt profusely. To me, it looks like it might be a Lion's mane jellyfish, and their stings are moderately painful.
PSA dont pee on it. Itll make it worse. Rinse with clean saltwater (not fresh), then either spray with vinegar or soak the area in hot, but not scalding water.
I got stung by a little jellyfish one time and I heard somewhere you're supposed to pee on it, so I did, but that just seemed to piss it off even more!! 😝
I remember getting stung as a kid😭 a large pack had come and they were evacuating the beach when i got stung. I walked through two of them on accident. Will never forget when my mom pored that white vinegar on my legs to release the stingers. The pain😭 10/10 an awful core memory.
