Nice video as always! For off road bikepacking from my experience these ones were really the one I recognize most: - Keep the weight mounted as low on the bike as possible, to keep your bike stable during technical sections and out of the saddle climbs. Personally I recommend trying to avoid having a heavy saddle bag: put as much as you can in frame bags, mount a set of 5L bags on your fork mounts if you have them and use the bottle mount underneath the frame. If possible I prefer not even bringing a saddle bag at all or just a small one for my tool kit and spare tubes. - Keep the weight evenly spread over the front and rear to keep the bike balanced. - And one quite obvious one: less is more. Only bring the absolute essentials and with every single item you chose to bring, make sure you bring the lightest one. Already just by being picky on the choice of bags you can save 500g or more, without limiting carrying space or items you bring. Keep up the amazing work, loving the videos!

Great tips especially for those of us who use our road (only) bike. Would have also been interested in what kit is in the bags.

Loving the Italy videos so far! Another tip/product recommendation: there's a neat little product called the Woho Xtouring Anti Sway that makes your saddle bag much more stable. It mounts on the saddle rails and sort of hugs your bag to keep it in place. And it also adds two additional bottle cage mounts, all for just 125 grams! I've used it on many bikepacking trips and wouldn't ever want to ride without it again actually.

You guys might take a look at the WOHO Saddle Bag Stabilizer. It's a great possibly to add water bottles. I am using it primarily for that reason, as I am using just a 7 l saddle bag or the tailfin. Should even work with that, maybe some bending is needed. Didn't used it together yet.

Top tip 14: Take a musette to put the groceries/food you buy to eat at mealtimes. Easy to carry and packs down super flat.

Many shoes like Shimano come with a free shoe bag. That’s what I use for buying food and carrying it away.

slightly off-topic, but seeing your bikes: I've also got a Focus Atlas but I'm wondering about the size. I'm 1m81 and I've got the size L. I feel like it might be too big for me (but right now it's hard to compare) - What size are you guys riding compared to your own height? (I know I should mention inner leg length, but I don't have a tape measure handy - i just feel like I really need to reach far to get to the bullhorns) Thanks!

In case it helps, I'm 1,81m as well, I got a Focus Atlas and the size M fits perfect!
@mrtnknrr
@mrtnknrr 3 года назад
I'm not familiar with Focus' sizing but L should be correct with your length with most brands. When you're in the hoods, your arms should be in a 90 degree compared to your torso. You can finetune your position by moving your saddle forwards/backwards and/or switching stem length. Assuming your saddle and handlebar are already at the correct height. Measuring inner leg length is an outdated and incorrect way to measure the bike fit: the only thing it measures is how far your seat post sticks out of your frame, which is unimportant. What is important is the front triangle of your frame: This is something you can not adjust without changing the handling of the bike. If you can't find that 90 degree angle with a stem length between 80mm and 120mm (on a bike with drop bars), you have the wrong frame size. If you can, your frame size is fine.

I'm 177 cm and the Focus sizing calculator recommends an Altas in size medium for me. However the medium height range is 176 cm 180 cm. I think I could ride a size small. I think you could ride a size medium. It just depends if you want to ride a little less stretched out.

Just for some reference: I've been cycling fanatically for 18 years now, I'm a total bike nerd and for several years I worked at a high end road bike / mtb specific bike store. (Just saying this to prove I'm not some online "arm chair expert")

@kronaar 3 года назад
Cheers for the replies. I know that at my height I'm just between M and L. I think I would've preferred an M. Too bad the bikes were preorder only.

That bottle on the underside of the down tube must get so dusty. Great video by the way really enjoyed it 👍

I keep my bikelock on the down-tube - it gets murky but I prefer to keep my bottles clean. Plenty of space on the fork for extra bottles on these bikes though.

*Top Tip:* (Specially on hot weather trip) Do not place your mug outside the bags, the dust goes in on the go and the first thing you would have to do at the time of using the mug is rinse it = wasting water

He Martijn, is there a reason why you have a 1X and the rest of the crew a 2X? I want to go bikepacking in Spain. I hesitate between these 2 possibilities.
