Our Best Day of Crabbing, Ever!

My first crabbing video remains one of the most viewed. It's time to take you along on another crabbing expedition on Netarts Bay, Oregon.
I've watched videos of various types of crab catchers in action underwater. I've learned that crabs come to the bait within minutes. It's not necessary to wait for hours.

There is something about the voice of somber, weathered gentleman that brings you into the story with his raspy narration, that then has you going back to his RU-vid channel for another dose of old-timer reality that leaves your soul filled with comfort like when your mom had hot cocoa for you and your neighborhood friends after a day of sledding down haystack hill on farmer Rob's property off of Elm Road when I was a kid. Just sounds about right!

WOW!! What a cooler full of nice crabs. You are good sportsmen always throwing the females back insures crabs for the future. The best of luck for future crabbing trips. Take care and be careful from the mountains of East Tennessee.

I'm new to crabbing and have learned a couple of things from this video alone, like "soft vs firm" and "boil in sea water vs fresh water". Thanks for the video! PS: Don't forget your gloves.
@OregonOldTimer
@OregonOldTimer 3 месяца назад
The only way I can "remember" gloves is to clip them to my cuffs the way my mother did when I was a toddler. If you don't have seawater to cook crabs in, you can buy crab boil in grocery stores. Seawater is cheaper.

I got to go out on Nehalem Bay in October. We got 61 keepers over 2 days. Some absolute monsters.

We launched on Nehalem Bay once a few years ago to fish, not to crab. We haven't been back because Tillamook and Netarts are closer.

I appreciate your RU-vid videos a great deal. I was lucky enough to get a spot on a boat on that bay last Thursday. Only three other boats were on the bay when we launched (about 30 minutes past low tide on the incoming tide). 74°F and no wind! We put 6 traps in and anchored for 20 minutes. We collected the pots and there were 34 keepers!!! Amazing day! I hope I get to head back there soon. It's my most favorite place to crab! If I don't luck into a boat spot, I do very well with my crab snares off the beach closer to the ocean.
@OregonOldTimer
@OregonOldTimer 10 месяцев назад
Boats aren't necessary. Nereida got her first crab by picking it out of the water in the rocks by the boat launch.
@hedoesthingspdx
@hedoesthingspdx 10 месяцев назад
@@OregonOldTimer I make crab snares that I cast with surf rods (12 foot, and 13 foot) off of Happy Camp Beach and I catch amazing crabs there as well. The boat made for a lot less work, but I do enjoy reeling in - it's always a mystery - will it be one giant male? two small females? At the beginning of this year I was reeling in all females for an hour, all had their aprons bursting with gright orange eggs. I took great care of them and sent them all off with kind words and encouragement to hatch those babies for future harvests

@@OregonOldTimer Very similar procedure but our blue crabs look smaller and much less meaty than those monsters you catch out there. I leave my pots in ~24 hours for a decent catch. Normally end up with 40-50 keepers which is about the max we can pick through unless we have company.

The boat looks great. And I will trade frozen crab for wood!!! 😍 Ever had pickled crab? It is similar to pickled herring. My boss in Alaska was well known for her pickled crab, and you had to be on her good list to even get a taste. It was one of the best foods I have ever had the pleasure of consuming!
@OregonOldTimer
@OregonOldTimer 10 месяцев назад
Never heard of pickled crab, but I'll take your word for its taste. Come on down and we'll go crabbing, but I don't need any more wood right now. I had so much in my shop that I couldn't move without tripping. Just moved a lot of blanks out to a shed today.

Is the water deep enough to throw nets off the bank?
@OregonOldTimer
@OregonOldTimer 9 месяцев назад
Many folks cast folding traps from shore with good success. You'd have to have a good arm to get a net trap from the rocks, I think.

Mr Crush what do you mean by Firm enough? What if it were soft? do they firm up later? Do you cook them alive? Sorry I am from the main Land Canada.
@chuckrobinson599
@chuckrobinson599 10 месяцев назад
Crabs are soft after they have molted. They harden up, afterwards.
@OregonOldTimer
@OregonOldTimer 10 месяцев назад
No apology necessary. We aren't born knowing everything. A soft shell is a new shell, a large house for a still small crab. Not much meat and not as tasty. The shell hardens as the crab grows into it. Squeezing a leg with fingers is how I check. There is no sharp line between hard and soft, but the harder the better. I'm sure we kept some that others would have thrown back, and we probably threw some back that others would have kept. My own standard varies a little depending on how many crabs we get.
@tonybologna139
@tonybologna139 9 месяцев назад
When’s the best time to go crabbing there? Low tide or high tide?
@OregonOldTimer
@OregonOldTimer 9 месяцев назад
General rule is, slack tide. High or low doesn't seem to matter much. Strong tidal currents force crabs to burrow into the sand so they don't have to waste energy fighting current. But, in areas out of the current, the best time to go is when you can.

Is there a reason why you don't do cooking and eating them because that's why you catch them right well us viewers want to see you cooking them up in some good recipes and showing how good they really taste that makes a whole video not just catching them everybody catches them so got to do something different
@OregonOldTimer
@OregonOldTimer 7 месяцев назад
The last three minutes of this video is cooking crabs. We don't do "recipes". We just boil them and eat them.
