There should be backflow valves on those lines so water never flows (siphons) back into the boat. Lucky catch and thanks for sharing this episode in boating.

I am surprised there are no bilge alarms to signal incoming water. Great catch Lyn especially for being alert enough in the middle of the night to hear the bilge running steady. Hopefully you will have working bilge alarms just above every bilge pump. Keep living my dreams and I will keep enjoying your videos! Thanks for all you do.

We are not sure why the alarm did not go off. The water did get high enough to run into the compartment under our engine that is not meant to get wet. We plan to install and anti-siphon valve. We have them on all the heads.

One of the things I reworked on my boat. I raised all the the discharge thruholes to several inches above the water line. This required a decent amount of glass work but it's worth it. I have never liked discharges at the water line or below.

Hi guys,.. enjoyed the videos. As a production person here’s a couple of friendly notes. (I would have made them privately but I could find an email.). Make your intro shorter. RU-vid viewers have limited attention spans. 15 seconds max. Some narration at the beginning gives a new viewer all the info they need to know about you. If you’re using Premier Pro for post I would suggest using auto color correct to help with color changes caused by lighting. Not a big thing but does give it a more polished feel. Again, love the channel and the Hatteras. My comments are given because I like what you’re doing. Enjoy your sailing and stay safe on the water.
@tryingnottosink9107
@tryingnottosink9107 5 лет назад
Thanks for the suggestions. We currently use Hit Film. We are slowly improving our videos. It is always a matter of balance quality, versus how much time we want to dedicate to filming and editing. I recently shorted our intro to 50 seconds (it was 65). Any shorter and we will need a new theme song, so it will probably wait until next year. Now that we are back home, we will have a little more time to put the videos together.

I used to be in this area for a few years. I would recommend getting fuel at Halifax municipal marina in Daytona. One cheaper, but they turn more fuel so it's not sitting. I got gas once at Inlet Harbor and 4.5 years later wishing I had never done it. I feel I got the bottom of the tank in February when we had a warm spell. City marinas for me when ever there is a choice which means just better planning. Inlet Harbor and Down the Hatch were always great for food. Disappearing Island just by the inlet is a great place to mingle. Better watch for shoaling as it moves. Enjoy your travels.

There is a fitting called a syphon break that you should consider fitting to you bilge line, if not try a one way valve at the pump. Plastic domestic versions work best.
@tryingnottosink9107
@tryingnottosink9107 4 года назад
We are planning to add siphon breaks on all bilges this winter.
@rclementtx
@rclementtx 5 лет назад
Gosh - 2 observations come to mind regarding your bilge situation and both call for some added corrective actions on your end. If indeed your main bilge pumps barely kept up with the water inflow from old "backup" bilge line that was syphoning water in, then I suspect that your main bilge pump is horribly undersized to handle a real leak. Consider increasing your primary bilge pump capacity significantly and remember that anything in the discharge line of the pump reduces its pumping capacity dramatically. Increasing pump capacity may affect your wiring size and circuit breaker rating on the bilge pumps, so you need to think beyond the pump itself. I'd also address the inflow situation post haste. Rather than simply leaving the old bilge piping that discharges into your sea chest(s) "as is", I'd want to do something that ensured that you never had a syphon event again - ever. While some argue that a check valve would work, check valves are notorious for getting fouled and leaking. I'd much rather put in a vented loop which is designed to break any syphon action when/if it occurs.
@tryingnottosink9107
@tryingnottosink9107 5 лет назад
We plan to install and anti-siphon valve or a vented loop. We have them on all the heads. I am surprised that they were not already there. The main bilge did keep up, but not by much. Between the siphon and the back flow from the main pump, it was only about 15 seconds between the pump turning on. The main pump also does not have a siphon.
@rclementtx
@rclementtx 5 лет назад
@@tryingnottosink9107 Absolutely on the anti-siphon valve ... but consider your main sump pump capacity as well. Are you happy with a main pump that can (barely) handle a siphoned stream based on your own observation? You've got an "oldish" boat and things will fail over time. Imagine if you lost a fitting or a seal below the water line. How about if you broke a SW cooling line on the engine or the genset? Would water come in at the (controlled?) (modest?) rate of the siphoned stream or is there a chance it would be a meaningful faster water flow? You do lots of off-shore cruising so that means that you need to be self-reliant until you troubleshoot your issues. Think thru your likely (possible) casualty conditions and make sure that your sump pump can handle them 'til you can troubleshoot them and shut them off. On boats, whenever I find a problem, I err on the side of being overly cautious on the "fix". Happy sailing.

Aside from boating, I love birds and have always had smaller ones like Conures and Meyers parrots. I am now lonely again and was thinking about getting an African Grey. I had the same issue on my sailboat. I was underway by myself when I noticed water filling the bilge to the floor! The pump emptied it out, but it came right back in. I was aware of the siphon possibility and my drain was under the transom, so I went on the bow to try and raise the stern out of the water. Nothing worked. I ran back to the marina letting friends know I had a problem. They stood by and when the boat was in it's slip and not underway the problem went away! I think because I was stressed out I never stopped moving towards the marina, and therefore nothing I did got the fitting above the water line long enough to clear the siphon. I did have a back flow fitting in the line, but obviously that didn't help. It did rattle, so I figured it worked. Never had the same problem again??? Sure got my heart rate going!

Backflow valves reduce flow, in both directions and are unreliable, what should be in place at the highest point of the loop is a vent (Scott vented loops out of Ft. Lauderdale have always worked for me) as this allows air in the hose to break the syphon. just a bent over hose never works properly

I love this video, very informative. I am now at the stage of waiting for my money to come in from something I can't post public about, still doing research. Along my research I found that you MIGHT be able too [well as long as you don't list or sit TOO LOW that is] you can buy fuel bladders and place them on desk and add more fuel capacity to be under weigh. I am not sure how much you can add to it but I wanted to share my research. As for my project, I am VERY interested in an older 60-ish foot Hatteras LRC (This was part of your comment back to me some time back). I will most ;likely want something with some room on top to maybe put some solar panels on it when the time comes. I don't think I'll need to know any broker information just yet though as it can still be about 6 more months or longer to get the money and I can't start shopping till that is in place. Thanks for the wonderful videos and please if you have any feed back at all, I want to hear it. Very unsafe on the ocean so safety first :) Still MUCH more to learn, I got the time on this... and HAPPY you are all okay and once I am closer I would love to consult with you more at some point though if you have the time or wish to become involved.

We are never completely comfortable. The first time was about 1 week after owning the boat. We only leave it for a few hours while we go to town for drinks, dinner or supplies. We have left it for a week tied to a mooring ball though.

Q: why is there no Check valve = Stainless steel check valve on the system as i have seen other boats have the same trouble with that hose if it falls down allowing water to flow back inside the ship ????????? Does not sound like a good system if this can happen?.

In my experience, it's always good to have a non electronic backup for obvious reasons. If you look at a modern aircraft with the all glass cockpits, they always have analog instruments tucked away on some corner of the panel. Operating a compass with out the fluid which lubricates the bearing and damps the compass is not a good long term idea. That's my story and I'm sticking to it. :)

The upper helm turns the rudder 5 degrees with every rotation. The lower helm turns 10 degrees. Not sure why that is. I use half the motion on the lower helm. Also, Lyn tends to film me on the way into an inlet (following seas and large waves).
