Hy guys, It is very interesting to see how you did to fix the sailboat. A paissonated job. I confess that i started to see your first video without any pretension, and when i realize that you where in Switzerland, and you wanted to take the boat to the mediterranian, it got very interesting to see how you whoud done. The beginning of the trip, in the French channels, the trip in the Mediterranian, the music and etc. was fantastic. It is a pleasure to see yours videos. Keep sailing. I have seen some things that you do that could increase the safety of your sailing. When in the dingy you don´t use the kill cord engine. Even with a small engine it is important to use the kill cord. If you fall in the water the boat starts to rotate around you. it is very dangerous, it doesn´t matter the size of the engine. The video that Maya shows how to use the anchor was very illustrative, but i saw that you dont use a cable to fix the anchor chain in the cheat to release the pressure in the anchor winch, attaching it to the cleats. Hope the winter in Switerland wont be so long and i can see you sailing again. See you!!!

... let's keep it simple... that great cool modest guy said! Good grief! My dear Aladino, this is by far the biggest understatement statement I ever heard! You invested such an incredible huge amount of work, sweat, idealism, discipline and ingenuity to rebuild this wrecked yacht. Therefore "simple" is not a word that fits at all. ;-) ;-) You did such a fantastic job, it's nearly unbelievable. I'm pretty sure... no... I know for sure that your boss, your family and, last but not least, your other boss (= your wife) is really proud of you. Congrats.

Hy PJorge! I did an apprenticeship in Switzerland which means 3-4years of hands on work in the field and 1day per week is theory in a classroom. Most important though is being passionate about the subject. Lots of reading,sailing and talking about boats. You can definitely also go the learning by doing way which is big part of it. But by being employed in a yard you sure get to practice all of it on a daily basis. Thx for all your kind comments! Cheers, Aladino

Keep up the good work and the great video's.

Hi Alidino and Maya. Have been following your adventures for a few years now but just got time to view this video and believe I know some of what you experienced. 21 years ago my 22 Trailer Sailer jack-knifed behind my car and suffered major damage. It was unfortunately (another story) uninsured so I was faced with a broken boat and trailer (they did an axial 360 degrees spin on the towbar together and landed, still attached to the car on the road facing oncoming traffic). I was introduced to a retired fibreglass boat designer who rebuilt the boat (I assisted as best I could), rebuilt the trailer and did lots of other repairs over 18 months then sailed her for 4 years before selling her to good friends who also sailed her for another five years before passing her on to their friends. Although mechanically trained and skilled I had no knowledge of fibreglassing but learned a lot in the process. Although your project was much bigger I am sure that we have both experienced similar pain, anxiety and absolute joy in the successful completion of bringing a boat "back to life". I am now past the 70 yo mark but am reminded by your beautifully articulated story of your experience with Magic Carpet and often watch your progress with Magic Carpet II. I wish you all the very best and look forward to a significant "Splash Day" before you grow too much older. Please continue entertaining us and stay safe.

That was the hydraulics for the steering wheel wich had an electric wheel pilot. My preference is tiller and also we have a roomier cockpit now. Aladino
@faircompetition1203
@faircompetition1203 5 лет назад
@@SailingMagicCarpet I like the tiller as well , have one on my Laser 28 . However I put a quadrant on the shaft and still have a below deck auto-helm and it is much more convenient than a tiller pilot . I used a octopus drive instead of a hydraulic so almost no resistance and does not take up much as much space . Because it is down below on auto I flip up the tiller and have even more space and the auto can sail to the wind instruments or chart plotter . The head you had and the computer can likely drive the octopus drive

I know, why ask such a painful question:) No need to give specific numbers but, I wonder if you are anywhere near breaking even. There is certainly lots of sentimental value which is obvious to anyone who watches the channel.

its never worth it financially as the boat will never be as good as new but that is true of all boats .Its unfortunate but we live in a throwaway world thats just how a modern free market econnomy works. Also when a fiberglass hull suffers that sort of impact she will never be completly sound again thats why she was written off by the insurance company
