Living Traditions Homestead is all about living a simple and sustainable way of life. We believe the world has gotten too “busy” and that people are missing out on many of the true blessings this world has to offer. We started as a small urban homestead in Gilbert, AZ and after the city grew up around us, decided it was time leave corporate America and take a big leap of faith by moving our family to the Missouri Ozarks.
We put out 2 new videos every week! Wednesday and Saturday. We hope you will become part of our homestead family by subscribing to our channel and watching as we give up the rat race and live simpler, more fulfilling life in the country.

I have the same setup in my kitchen. I copied it from my granddaughter. I think she saw it on Pinterest. It’s such a great way to store your cast iron and makes it so easy to access. Y’all are such an awesome family. I feel like I’ve learn a tremendous amount from watching all your videos. We’ve had our cast iron for decades. Great video!

Hi, that was a really neat video. I started to get into cast iron a few days ago when I was able to buy one and it was only 5 bucks at Wallmart, its all I could afford at the time. But I got into them because I noticed that here in California I am seeing in every isle of the pans or other cooking appliances say "These items contain chemicals known to cause cancer." Why in the world are they selling them? My father died of one of the worse cancers and after seeing over and over and over and over everywhere I see pans being sold I said, ENOUGH! So, I bought me my first one and loved it. I did season it with some oil and salt as I saw in one video but then saw so many other ways. Some cheap salt and some oil is all I could afford but I did heat it up till it smoked, cleaned it off, did it again, then oiled it and cooked some onions till golden and then chopped a huge piece of chicken breast and it was so nice to to eat it and know I was not eating out of some garbage pot made with chemicals that cause cancer. I'm hooked and also did not know I could resurface them if It got bad or found one bad, I have the buffer tool to re coat it again. Thanks and look forward to your videos.

Love finding a good deal like that on cast iron. I got a huge 2 piece pan set for $4 at Walmart once! Just make sure that the box of the product actually says "cast iron". I once by mistake bought a Dutch oven that was a faux cast iron. It was really some other metal coated in a Teflon like substance and when I had it in my oven it caught on fire and smoked my whole house out. 🤢 Threw that garbage out. Usually it will say in small print somewhere on the box that it's got a "nonstick coating" avoid those at all cost. If it's cast iron it will say cast iron and it will usually say it's "preseasoned". Cast iron is awesome.

My mom and grandma had all kinds of cast iron grandma even had a cast iron bed warmer I still have a couple of the pieces but I couldn't tell you where some of it went mom gave it to different people but I still have 2 different size skillets that mainly I use for cornbread sometimes I'll fry potatoes in them but otherwise they hang on my wall in the kitchen. Kevin that display is gorgeous ..over the years I have become somewhat of a minimalist I had a house fire several years ago and lost so much now I have very little but that's ok it's less to loose..kevin the cast iron display is beautiful..

Great video. Love cooking with cast iron and your display is very nice. One comment about the ring on the bottom of some older pans. That ring was meant to fit in the opening of some woodstoves. The idea was that it formed a mild seal around the bottom of the pan.

You have a shallow waffle iron. They also made them with the rack holding waffle iron about 4 inches high. Wagner also made a square bacon and eggs pan. Has compartments marked on cooking surface. Would be a great addition to your collection.

I have to tell ya man, my wife and I have been watching your families homestead vids a lot. Your family is amazing. We have about a quarter acre of market gardening beds, and you folks literally do it all. Amazing inspiration. I am a cast iron nut as well. Have been trading, and collecting, and reselling for years. These are a great cooking collection. I am a lodge man myself, but have had many Griswold and Wagner Ware products. If you have any ?s let me know. Nice collection. I also would like to send some fan mail. I have a #10 lodge Big 10 Dutch oven. Big brother to your lodge #8 Dutch oven. I’m from Oregon and currently have 16 cast iron ovens. I think you folks could use this one. It’s nice, or you can have the Birmingham stove and range #12 Dutch oven. You pick, just get a hold of me, and let me know where to send the one you want. Our families gift to you for all the great videos. Thanks again guys, and keep up the great work.

Good video! I love cast iron, too. As far as the finish: I was told once that the rough surface is because it's mass produced. The smooth finish are pre-1950 pieces and were polished because the maker was proud of his product. If Lodge had competition they'd figure out a way to smooth it out. Great score on the waffle iron, BTW

@@lorenstribling6096 Thanks for the tip, mostly I used the lye cleaner on the outsides, where food had dripped and burned / welded on. The insides were not generally that dirty, except for maybe at the very tops, where people had poured food out of them and it burned onto the edge.

I got a lidded pot from a blacksmith at a craft festival in my county, well over a decade ago. It's almost identical to the one in this video that you say was from Grandpa Dan. It's one of those things that you can't imagine how you functioned in the kitchen before you had it. I use it for so much. I also have lots of cast iron skillets that came from Mom and Gramma. I love that those are generational items. Cast iron is great and having cast iron items that came from previous family generations makes it even better. Great video!

I've just discovered an easy way to clean cast iron! I was given two absolutely disgusting fry pans - we're talking up to 1/2 a centimetre of charred build up on the outside and greasy gunk on the inside - seriously! Well, I was about to put my oven and its burners in the self-clean cycle of my gas oven and thought, "Why not the pans?" So I placed them in upside down, ran the cycle and they came out like new unseasoned cast iron ware! Be sure to open all windows and if you have one, flip on the stove fan to HIGH! My hubby thought I was burning down the house, lol! But It worked! Just wash and re-season right away. Hope this helps :-) .

The self cleaning oven method for cleaning cast iron works most of the time but there are certain times when you will warp old vintage (thin) cast iron or sometimes too much build up will cause your oven to burn out as they are not made to clean as much stuff that can be on some really crudded up cast iron. There are much safer methods of cleaning your cast iron that will not harm your cast iron or your oven. One is something called a Lye Bath and the other is called an E-Tank.

I have one cast iron skillet. I have looked at the thrift stores, garage and yard sales, and other similar venues for used cast iron skillets and can't really justify spending more on a used pan than what a brand new pan would cost. The skillet I have is not overly large. I think it is maybe 10 inches; but, I've been looking for something smaller, around 6 inches that I can use to cook just one egg or one pan biscuit or pancake.

I have that same waffle iron, it is from the Griswold MNG. Co and patented in 1908. My husband bought a Peacock wood stove for our camp and it came with it. When I was in my mid twenties someone gave me a cast iron skillet that was at least 26 inches across. It was HUGE. Very, very heavy...and, to be honest, it was so big it was unuseable to me. I ended up giving it away and I SO regret doing so. I probably still wouldn't be able to use it but it would look great hanging on my kitchen wall! I still have some wonderful cast iron skillets I use daily as well as a dutch oven that I love. There's nothing like cast iron cookware! Loved seeing your collection, Kevin!

Wonderful video and cast iron collection! I have a 1930 Home Comfort kitchen wood stove, where using cast iron cookware is paramount. Noticed your waffle iron. After 2 years of searching, I found a 1908, 7" Griswold in mint condition. I also found original instructions. You are supposed to heat it up over an open flame ( kitchen wood stove) and THEN slide it off to pour your waffles batter. A good 1908 cook should get two waffles off one heating... but I use mine on my summer propane range as well. The Lodge is fine, as you say and is easy to obtain.

Hafta say, that I will always keep a small Teflon pan around the house (basically for eggs) but the best tip to keep teflon for a long time & in good shape is to throw a small dish towel over it when you put it away! I know that seems obvious if you already do that, but I've seen more than a few friends stack their pans up, metal to metal in the cupboard.

my mother had EVERYONE of those skillets plus one even smaller than your smallest. the biggest skillet she used fry fish. the second from the bottom roll I was given and it doesn't have a name, mama called it a chicken fryer due to the high sides. I learned how to cook with that skillet and still use it today to make biscuits and cornbread in. the only drawback to cast iron is the weight. by the time you have it full of food it can be very heavy, and at a certain age, it is hard to handle. mama had the waffle iron without the ring. she just used it on the stove without the ring.

The cast iron cookware learning curve is very slight, ie restoring, seasoning, cleaning, yet it seems so many folks just don't want to put in the effort. This is where the walmarts and targets and sears make their money selling cheap cookware that is supposedly maint free. If one is willing to spend the initial time to learn and understand cast iron, it opens up a whole new world of possibilities for cooking. Being able to bake a pie or cookies in the same pan I fry bacon and hamburger in is just plain cool.

Don't give up on that pan. It might need several coats of seasoning in the oven but it will recover.

I know I'm months behind in commenting on this video, I have commented my envy in your VLOG more recently....and I am a 'Traditionalists'! In my comments I have called it "cast iron cookware envy", it is a fabulous collection! I also commented that the pipe railing hanging setup is equal to the collection! I really believe the down turn to stop using CI and switch to thinner, lighter, and coated pans was due to there weight, the problem with storing them in cabinets/shelving, and the change to different cooking surfaces, oh yah I almost forgot try dropping CI pans on any kitchen flooring....no need to do the math on that! The pipe railing for hanging your pans is smart and perfect, the bases are 'railing flanges' and they were galvanized before you painted them, not silver....lol. Probably schedule 40 pipe with malleable iron elbows. Thanks for Listening and God Bless

My grandmother had her grandmother's dutch oven. It went to another branch of the family. It must have been from the 1800's as she was born right around the turn of the 1900's. It was well used and well loved.

I LOVE cast iron. You have a great collection. All of mine came from my aunt and my mom, both have passed away so the pans are my treasures.

And something you can pass along as treasures and one day someone will say 'these came from my great aunt/grandmother Kathy, who got them from her mother and aunt'. I'm glad they have fond memories for you, that you can pass along to the younger generation.

Your fire crock is bigger then mine but I really love mine too! It works really good to bake corn bread , cakes , breads and rice puddin! Lol well that's all I've baked in it besides stew and beans ...so far! Only problem I have with my beloved cast irons is their weight . At 60+ I'm beginning to notice just how heavy my full double sided 20" oblong griddle is ! Whew! But these are something my mountain man son lol has been drooling over for almost 40 years ...so ...maybe....lol , just the heavy stuff ...about half!!! 😉 don't forget the cleaning sand and bear or pork strap to re season!!

Smithey ironware, field company, butter pat industries, stargazer, borough furnace, finex and lucky decade are all U.S. makers of cast iron. Solidteknicks is an Australian manufacturer of healthy, multigenerational cookware. They make cast iron, carbon steel, and no nickel stainless cookware.

I know you was talking about how the lodge can be rough. Have you seen Cowboy Kent Rollins talk about smoothing out the roughness on lodge. I love your collection and plan on moving over to mostly cast. Thank you for the videos and all the information you provide.

Excellent video Kevin, I love that pot with the lid on it for putting coals on top. The one that you use for baked beans. I've talked to others that have one and they love them. I bet that there is one of them floating around that is in a rectangular shape. I haven't seen anything but the round ones like the one that you have. It would be great for baking bread and muffins and stuff like that. Cast iron is just cool in my book. Great commentary and a wonderful topic my friend. Thanks

Wow I really like your display. What a smart way to display your collection and have it handy to use at a moments notice. I hope you do use it, and not just have it hanging up there to look at. I like cast iron and like teflon too, even though I'm sure I've eaten a bunch of teflon, ha ha ha, who didn't have a few pans that eventually flaked off. Where did those flakes go? Into your food, into your body - brain - liver - bones etc. Meanwhile the iron from your pans is good for you, according to my mom - I grew up eating 'black' food from the iron from the cast iron pans........."don't look at it, just eat it", my mom used to say. I like the fluted 'dutch oven' looking pan, what a pretty pan.

That is nice isn't it! It was given to me by a family friend who had been using it to just catch the grease dripping from his grill! I had to strip it down because it was rusty but it is a great pan now! Glad you enjoyed the collection.

The more you use that lodge with metal utensils too the smoother it will become. Or I guess you could sand it down like some people do.

I collect and restore all the majors with lye and electrolysis. I also like gate marked pieces, provided they don't have too many casting flaws. As for Lodge, I generally hate them and won't buy anything more recent than a one notch. There's one skillet here that I suspect is a Blacklock, but there's no way to know for certain.
