This video has wayyy too much me, and not enough of the cats!
We have completed the cat fence for our backyard, and this is a video explaining our thought process, and giving you a glimpse of our now super cat-friendly backyard!
Thank again to everyone who donated to and shared our GoFundMe! This project would not have been possible without your help!

This is amazing! Especially if your house is next to a highway for example. They can still enjoy garden time freely. So cool. I still remember you saying in a video you weren't really a cat person before those kitties came into your life.. and look at you know. Going the extra mile. Your cats are one of the luckiest on the planet. Bless

I had a similar set up with commercial cat netting. My cat worked out how carry himself along the underside. I extended it out further and tried chicken wire, fence netting, fruit tree netting etc etc but it didn't deter him. I ended up putting 100mm pvc pipe along the fence line. So far so good.

It’s exactly what we did to keep our cat from going over the walk. Tried the spikes, chicken wire, spent a fortune, then saw the drainpipe method, it’s the best ever as the cat can’t grip to the pvc . Simple to put up to 🙌🙌🙌

Well done. I urge people to cat proof yards all the time and do it myself for my 5 cats in the UK. Your video was very explanatory. 🐱🐱

Such a fantastic solution. I've been thinking about building a catio. Then I was looking at cat fencing systems - holy moly what a price. And it's almost identical to what you've done. I love it. Now to get some decking. Thank you.

I was actually thinking of Skids the other day wondering how he and Danni were doing. Glad to see how well engineered your barrier system is. You both are good parents. Thanks for making this video. It was great to see Skids scooting along so fast at the end. Take care.

Great job I'm wanting to do this we have 5 cats but only 2 get out the other 3 are old and don't want or can't climb up the fence. Now for the other 2 one(Wehlan) is 11 months old and he goes over the fence there is a big field with 4 horses but they are fenced away from our part of the field so he goes down a couple houses and watches the neighbore 2 hens and he cuts thru their yard and comes back home. Now that leaves our 9 months old kitty (Marty) he has just realized he can jump and climb over the fence and into the field but he likes to go out into the middle of the field and then over to their Barn which has a couple older barn cats that are very protective of their home and he doesn't come back till we go get him or the neighbor shoos him back. So we are going to build the cat barrier hopefully this weekend so we won't worry about him.

I'm using angle iron brackets. Much stronger then wood. But I have angle grinder and mig welder and bench drill press and other tools which are needed to work on metal

This is fantastic! Well-thought through and constructed. When I move, I hope to have a yard that I can do this so that all my furbabies can go outside in safety and I won't have to worry about them running away if they get scared! Your kitties are so very lucky! Skids was put in your path for a reason. Both of you got lucky!

Excellent bit of Building. (Videography not all that Bad, either. That little bit showing Skidmark being "Catishly Nonchalant" about his three-legged Life was Pretty Good -- reminded me of an olde animate flick, called "The Last Unicorn." {"No cat out of his first fur can ever be fooled, by a-pearances.})

This video warmed my heart. I love it. I have a neighbor who has been baiting and trapping my indoor outdoor cats so far he has trapped three of my neighbors cats he’s either killing them or dumping them and AnimAl Control won’t help me in fact animal control told him that he can trap cats if they wander on his property he’s an evil vicious man and he won’t stop no matter what. We have been keeping our cats in our house and my hearts broken as there’s nothing I can do.

My cat is easily contained, but the stray, aggressive cat would leap over that from the fence top. She often gets in via the roof.
@MikePlacer

I know a lot of outdoor cats that can easily jump that or just use the wooded post and jump down but I like the idea I just wouldn’t leave my indoor cats out by themselves

Intention is very good. I highly doubt it will stop cats though !!! You nead, at least, another part coming down from the brackets ...
@rachavya

There's no arguing with success. If your cats can't escape, you have solved your problem. However, I'd be concerned about going through all the effort only to encounter one of the following: 1. Gymnastic cat climbs the mesh from the underside to the point where it can flip to the other side and escape. 2. There's nothing preventing other cats and coyotes entering from the outside. Seems to me the best approach is a symmetric one in which animals on either side can't get to the other side. And that would be a roller system.

I'm currently building a fence around my patio with a doggie door so they can sit out there whenever they want. But this seems so much better :O I may consider reinforcing my backyard fence to do this.. but what if a neighbors cat ends up in the backyard, do you just chuck it back over the fence or what lmao :P
@NjniaVanDerWald
@NjniaVanDerWald 6 лет назад
Valoria basically yes. but as they said in the beginning in the video, they used a saggy kind of fencing for the overhang, so animals don't feel comfortable walking on top of it.
@ilovexscapethefate
@ilovexscapethefate 6 лет назад
Yeah but there's always the off chance ahaha. I wonder if raccoons/oppssums can maneuver through it? also that got me thinking, I have trees in my backyard so i'm presuming you would use the same technique of fencing off the top of the trees so they don't climb out that way as well
@E511
@E511 6 лет назад
That is the downside to it, if they manage to get IN the yard, they won't be able to get OUT. We wanted the brackets to be as thin as we could, and being 1x6 we think that might just be thin enough that they won't walk onto the brackets, and like the other commenter said, the netting is loose enough and widely spaced enough that they can't walk on that. I have seen the neighbor cats sitting on the fence, but it looks like they don't care enough to try and get over. My thought is that, if they try it once, being stuck in the backyard will teach them enough of a lesson to not want to try again. Raccoons might be able to parkour through, they are wiley, but the fence is pretty secure top and bottom.
@E511
@E511 6 лет назад
And yes on the trees, that or trim them if they are far enough away from the fence.
@ilovexscapethefate
@ilovexscapethefate 6 лет назад
Ahhh I see. That's what I thought, those brackets looked thin for that purpose. Thanks for explaining :)

I tried something like this but my cat climbs upside down then over. Have you noticed this is an issue! Im thinking of doing something like this but with aluminum instead of netting so our cat can't climb it.

It seems like they could get out through that gap at the gate where the bracket is at an angle. Have they gotten out there?

I wonder if the netting placement was reversed - pointing out - if this would protect property from a coyote?

I love your idea, yet, our neighbor lost their cat to an eagle. I keep my cats in an enclosure. Hawks do not need to enter. Or, eagles ;). I use an indoor cat cage and they can enter thru my window. I also lost a puppy two years ago to a raccoon attacking her. They still come in your yard. Miss Jones Bay City MI

Do you think that nylon mesh can work? or it has to be plastic? I'm not sure if they could be able to climb upside down and get over it.
@OWK000
@OWK000 3 года назад
Does this keep the neighbors cats out or only discourage them. Could an aggressive cat get in? I guess you could always put spikes on the brackets. (I have had problems with an agressive neighborhood cat and I don't want to deal with that again.)
