Our country can be likened to a human body. If its capital city is its heart, its transportation and communication networks serve as its veins. Just like veins, the roads should deliver "nutrients" to all parts of the "body", from the city to the most rural areas. Otherwise, the parts that don't receive sufficient "nutrients" from the heart would degenerate, die, and eventually require amputation.
Efficient infrastructures (transportation and communication systems) enhance both security and economy. Out-of-grid regions (those that are not connected to the country's road networks, those that are not accessible to vehicles, those that require hours of walking along slippery and muddy footpaths to reach) could easily become breeding grounds of rebels.
Infrastructure spending should not be limited to the cities, but should extend to the provinces, towns, and barangays. We need to construct farm-to-market roads to help farmers become more productive citizens and thus, generate more income, not only for themselves bu for their communities as well.
