Very important to keep up on things. I was in maintenance for many years and as Benjamin Franklin said "A stitch in time saves nine" or was it "and ounce of prevention, saves a pound of cure".

When your going out to check pivots carry a 3ft piece of aluminum pipe with you. Squeeze the lock on the valve handles and then slide the pipe over (1 1/2in diameter should work) then you have mechanical leverage to move the valves. This is what we do on older tank farms in the Alberta oil patch

Great to see the ear plugs…having just gotten hearing aids for exposures as a Marine, happy to see you won’t be having those issues. Can you take a section of pipe out to use as an extension to lever those valve handles? Works for me on my lawn tractor (we are all farmers at some level) when removing blades for sharpening.

@scots_knight4706 Год назад
I was thinking that a bit of leverage would have helped but maybe they don't want to risk breaking something if it jams somehow, not sure if it could. I'm a Scottish farmer but only playing at it compared to their scale. Yes earplugs are sensible as I started with noisy cabless tractors. You have my utmost respect as a former Marine 🇺🇸❤️🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🇬🇧

I worked on a ranch in western Colorado in the mid-nineties. We used side-roll sprinklers to irrigate our hay ground. The water came in via gravity so we didn't have any pumps or anything to mess with. We actually had pressure reducers because there was so much fall from the top of the fields to the bottom that we had to reduce pressure or we'd damage things. We moved the sprinklers at 6 am and 6 pm and I remember irrigating as being peaceful and relaxing because it was a simple but important job.

Even though this video was released very recently I'm willing to be this was filmed 2-3 weeks ago. Here in SE Nebraska (not to far from where Laura is) the corn is now 6 ft tall and tasseling out (July 13, 2023). 2-3 weeks ago the corn looked like what is in this video. Then we got a bunch of rain and the corn has grown like crazy.

In North Wales UK, water supply is rarely a problem for agricultural. It rains most days quite heavily. We do not require any irrigation systems except Mother Natures regular dollops. However few crops are grown here owing to the poor soils and hill and mountain slopes but, also because its very wet. It's most beef cattle and sheep who thrive on the weather, or forestry. Your videos are a welcome change from "Clarksons Farm" based in lowland Oxfordshire, England. Drought (though much milder than Nebraska) can be a problem for them, in some summers.

Laura, I realize you get a lot of folks telling you to do this or do that. I do have a simple suggestion that will make your life so much easier. Most farms have a piece of aluminum pipe (something sturdy but light to pick up) about 2 or 3 inches in diameter. Cut a section of that pipe about 4 feet long or so. When you open or shut the pivot valves, just slip the pipe over the gate handle and now you have a lever that makes turning so much easier. Leverage. Thanks so much for the update videos. I love seeing all your hard work growing so nicely.

I saw one in one of your dad's video's last year and have seen the articulated arm from the air, while flying over Nebraska, but I don't understand what it is and how it works. Thanks. Great job.
@Skinflaps_Meatslapper
@Skinflaps_Meatslapper Год назад
Oh, are you talking about a pivot swing arm? They're not very common but they do add some extra farmable acres to a traditional center pivot, about 10% or so. Basically the pivot is oversized for the field with a section that can pivot on its own, so they can swing out straight to the corners and then fold back in diagonally for the shorter distance to the sides, as the corners on a square plot of land are often difficult to irrigate with a circular pivot. It's all computer controlled and can be programmed, as well as the end gun kicking on to get a little more reach to the corner. Since the investment is roughly the same between small fields and large section sized fields, it's really only a good investment on the larger ones. There's a ton of other ways that you can program both standard pivots as well as swing arms to irrigate oddly shaped fields to get the water where you need it and nowhere else...that's extremely important as irrigation can be one of the highest costs to farmers depending on their location and crop.

Great vid. The only thing missing was Laura pulling out a big cigar at the end. Laura and Grant are an A-team on their own.

I work for a local utility here in Ohio, and was wondering if you considered Directional boring for you electric, also referred to as horizontal directional drilling ( HDD ). It does minimal impact to your fields and its something the utility company doesn't have to do. They would only need to tie in at the pole for you. They could also put in a pad mount housing where you could run many cables to it. Utility would only need to make one run to the pad mount housing.

Its very interesting to see the difference between US and EU in watering plants (Netherlands)... Thank for vid, nice as always :) Just, the radiator on last engine, isnt it a little bit too much full of mess? just little bit concerned about raising temperatures there, but hopefully its alright :)

wow, was wondering if I went to the Factor chanel after over 2 minutes of the video. Have to pay for all those expensive toys I guess. Not exactly a Farm aid endorsement anymore. Please don't misunderstand, I get it, this the state of our world now. Love you guys and your content. I wish you all the best, glad you young people are taking up the mantle to keep farming. Go Solar for those pumps!

Solar takes up a bunch of space that could be used for crops instead. Also to get a 3 phase would be very expensive and it doesn't work at night. And they just had a major hail storm... Solar is great, but not for this application.

Yes agree 100% you can still end up with hearing damage from low frequencies that hearing plugs don't prevent they still vibrate your ears. That's why you need ear muffs like your Dad wears. Goes for Grant also tinnitus really sucks...imagine having cicadas going off in your head and never can turn them off.
