My mum was offered an abortion with my sister who had Down's. My sister passed away at 5 but my mum still says she wouldn't have done anything differently.

It makes me so frustrated that people actually judge and look down on women who decide to have an abortion because of possible handicaps. It's really not a question or mindset of "I don't want a handicapped child", but more a "I don't have the time, money or possibility to take my responsibility as a mother and take care of a mentally or physically challenged child". If you feel like you can take care of a child with a handicap, great, that's awesome! If you don't, than that's how it is. It's not something anyone can do about it, so why criticize and judge? Not everyone have the resources to have and raise a disabled kid.

The problem with this, for me at least, is that although the girls seem absolutely wonderful and clearly function really well within their environment, there are many children with Down's Syndrome who are unable to speak, go to school or live any sort of normal life to the extent that the twins are. The disparity between cases is massive and expectant mums don't know how badly their child will be affected, because of this fear I really don't feel its anyone's place to judge those who do choose to terminate the pregnancy.

In Ireland youre not given the option to terminate in any situation. This video shows 2 very highly functioning girls with DS, however this is not always the case. My cousin has DS and autism, he is 18 and still cant even communicate properly never mind learn to write. He throws tantrums, he hits, he kicks, he smashes things. Although he is also the sweetest most caring little boy I know, he has stolen the life of his parents to care for him and he also has no real life of his own. He is a beautiful soul trapped in a ill functioning mind and its not a life I'd wish on any child.

It's good to be educated on this kind of topic.

Lovely family. What an amazing brother Abigail and Isobel have. I have a special place in my heart for people with Downs. There is such a capacity for love and sincerity from these sweet souls. To think that anyone would terminate a pregnancy because of their child may have downs syndrome is terribly selfish.

As two of my childhood friends had this condition I'm aware that people with DS can be nice, kind, happy, loving, and as capable as people without it, but I also know that It is not always the case. And if they are nice, kind, happy, loving, and capable is not because of DS it is because they are persons with different personalities and characteristics, so I don't see that as a pro. I can't see how the fact of having DS, that can cause so many health and development problems can be beneficial for anyone.Therefore, I find that choosing to abort when being sure that your future child will have DS is totally valid, if not common sense. I'm sorry for my English and if I might offend anyone, I just were so frustrated that I wanted to express my opinion.

I know this video is trying to show how awesome life can be despite down syndrome, and the girls and their family truly do look happy. Choosing to keep their babies was the right choice for their family at that time. However I think that not every family is capable, financially or emotionally to take care of a child with disabilities and if they believe the choice to terminate a pregnancy is the correct one, we shouldn't judge them for that. A child with any sort of disability requires extra of everything.. time, money, resources. Not everyone has the resources or the ability to alter their entire life to care for a disabled child, some families do. I do think it's very brave to choose not to terminate if the baby has a disability, you could potentially have to give up so many things in your life and having a child with a disability ages you so much faster. It's hard work and its stressful. I don't think its selfish to terminate a wanted pregnancy if the fetus has a profound disability. I'll probably get a lock of flack for sticking up for people who want to terminate their pregnancies, but I'm just trying to see it from the other side. Put yourselves in the pregnant mother's shoes and try to feel what she would feel. It can't be easy regardless of what they choose. Having a baby already changes your life in every way, and I don't think a woman or a family should have to be forced to raise a child with a disability if they are not willing or able to do so in a way that is fair to both the child and the parents.

My brother has downs and he is the nicest person I know! Although he finds it hard to talk and has to go to a special school, me and my twin brother and my parents love him!

I went to school with twins who had downsyndrome. One of them also had austism so she couldnt talk. This year they left elementary school into grade 9 and I got emotional!

The doctor most likely said sorry because most parents are expecting babies with out issues. He may have thought you would be upset. I think you have adorable children and he would agree.

At the end of the day, every one should have a choice; it's wonderful to see this beautiful family but not everyone has a similar situation. And very Down child is different.

I have autism some my friends are more severe I have some friends with DS some are high functioning I know some who are very They can't dress them self or use the toilet some are still in dipper need 24/7 care .you should never judge what a parent choices to do I know I could have had a child like me .but everyone has a choice

my little SD girl passed away at the age of 5 months..few days before her heart surgery. she had 3 holes in the heart...glad to see you girls grew so well..

It's so inspiring to see them live life as if they were any other child. I have a little cousin who has Down's Syndrome and when he was born he had to have heart surgery and he also had eye surgery and he now wears glasses due to him not being able to see well. But he still fights and is such an angel. So I hope these girls will fight as well and live life to the fullest :) God bless❤️

I am happy for this couple. But, I think it's appropriate, as well, to document the adult Down's Syndrome and the challenges they face. A documentary needs to look at the whole picture. If it doesn't, it's just a story, a movie, for fun.

I used to be a kindergarten teacher, and I've had allot of down-syndrome kids during my years in my class. All of them were the sweetest children ever. However, some of them were very high-functioning, (I've had one that besides the typical down-syndrome 'look', had nothing wrong with him except for a heart disease, he was such an intelligent child, he was top of the class,) while I had one really agressive child that was constantly tormenting the other kids an her little sisters (-she also couldn't communicate on any level), and another one that also couldn't speak, was severely autistic, and even though he was very sweet, it was as if he was in his own world -he was non-functioning at all, he couldn't even eat by himself (the autism didn't really do him a favor either). It really depends on the individual. Of course you never know how your kids will turn out, and while there are allot of success stories, I sometimes wonder about those non-functioning kids that live like a plant.

The best part of the video is how clearly and wonderfully their brother explains his sisters’ disability. Clearly his parents have talked to him and explained things.

Such beautiful girls! Such a great big brother! And such wonderful, loving parents!

I work in a charity providing care and education for people with learning difficulties and physical disabilities. We have several people with downs there and they're abilities all differ greatly. One can't talk very much, but can communicate, another is the life and soul of any group he is in and works really hard for his and others rights and advocacy and one girl I work with in particular can speak amazingly and I work with her 1:1 in college completing a maths/English/life skills course. Downs can be a life worth living over no life at all, but ultimately I still believe it's up to the mother/parents to decide if they can cope emotionally/physically and financially to name a few.

This seems really one sided- having any child means making a commitment for 18 years, having a disabled child costs a lot more time and money, and in the case of down's syndrome often life long care. I wouldn't want to put them through such a hard life, and I have a low income anyway so a normal child would be really tough, so I would abort. It's fine when they're little, but most adults with down's syndrome are unemployed and require supported housing for life. I just can't provide a decent lifestyle for them.

Parents are perfect and also the girls older brother is a little superstar.

I hope these kids grow up to be happy adults.

Abigail and Isobel are two sweet beautiful girls and I feel like if someone has a child/children who has Down syndrome are the luckiest people in the world. Children with Down syndrome are happy and they always bring joy to the world. Don’t judge them there human to. :)

The reason the doctor apologised before breaking the news was because it's far from the ideal scenario and anyone who says it is isn't being truthful. I'm glad she's happy with her family circumstances but just because she is doesn't mean anyone else would be or should be. She doesn't speak for everyone in this same scenario.

My Aunt had Downs Syndrome, she was the happiest and most loving person I ever met. If in the future I was told my unborn child had DS, there's not a chance on this earth I'd abort. They are normal people, happy and loving people...what more could you want?

I have a 13 year old with DS. I would not change anything about her because DS is what makes her who she is today. She a wonderful healthy child that is loved by so many people. If I had to do it again, I would!

I feel sad for all these people commenting that they would abort, because they do not know all the joy that they are missing! my little sister had Down Syndrome and I wouldn't change her​ for anything. I have never ever heard a parent that has a child with Down Syndrome say " Man, they are so much work. I wish I would have aborted them!". Is there life going to be hard at times? Yes, but everyone has things in their life that make it hard. If you knew your child would have depression in their life and be bullied would you abort them for it? No, you would not. All children deserve to live, even if life is hard.

the ultrasound and tests said one of my twins were down's syndrome and suggested that I abort that twin...neither had down's...neither had trisomy of any form..

my baby cuz is just over 1 he has downsyndrome hes just learnt to crawl hes so sweet i also help a little boy with downsyndrome in year 7 there all wonderfull wouldnt replace them

I think I agree with the mum, everyone should have the option, but they should be given the pros and the cons.

If you have the financial means to support a child with down syndrome, then I would strongly suggest not terminating. My uncle grew up with down syndrome in the 70s, and he is now in his 40s and has lived a happy life bringing joy to everyone that has known him. When you decide to have a child, there is only so much control you have over them. If your sole reason for termination is down syndrome, then you're likely not prepared for the numerous other surprises that come with parenting.

These girls are beautiful!! (Brother, mother and father too!!) I'd feel blessed to have them in my life! My mum and dad were informed of abnormalities in me in the womb and advised to abort. I DO have an extra chromosome just like Isobel and Abigail...mine is of chromosome 22 (I have 'cat eye syndrome') it's rare and misunderstood: why shouldn't they be chartered accountants!!? They'd be honest ones!! 💖 I have no vision from one eye and, yes, like these beautiful girls, I spend more time visiting doctors in many departments. More than 30 years ago my mum and dad chose to give me a chance and I am the only one of their 4 children to have studied to degree level. (And yes, I passed!) life is not about being perfect... I don't know for an absolute fact what it is about, but perfect DNA is not it... I believe it's about helping the other people whom you encounter during your very short time here on earth.

The comments on this video made me so sad. I have a sister with Down's and she is the best thing that has ever happened to me. I can't believe that there is so much support for aborting a baby because they are "different" Why? Because you don't want the responsibility of raising "that kind" of child. But in reality, people with Down's always make you smile and laugh. They are the kindest and most generous people you'll ever meet

I feel that many women terminate because they simply don't have the resources, and if they did they wouldn't. Maybe in order to decrease abortions of babies with Downs we should try and keep teen pregnancies down and help keep funding planned parent hood.
