Very nice indeed, these ultra slow growers get slower as they age;- in fact I would say probably even slower the fire barrel Ferocactus pilosus, which themselves average only 2 cm or 3cm of growth a year. Very very tolerant of ultra dry conditions:- these plants are true desert dwellers. Prefectly happy with strong direct sun for over 10 hours a day, months at a time without rain, I don't know how they survive!!. I have seen a couple of these on Gran Canaria (Spain) over 1 metre across. I can't even begin to estimate their age!. Remarkable.
@desertplantsofavalon

Dear Lyn, thank you for interesting videos, I have spent many minutes watching your channel! And now I have a question about spines, what are factors influencing on the spine growing process on echinocactus? A have ingens indoor (East window location) and new spines are twice less than at previous owner conditions. What is your experience in getting spines on cacti? Thank you for your reply!
@desertplantsofavalon
@desertplantsofavalon 2 года назад
Hi Valerie :-D so happy you enjoy my videos, Spines are influenced by light levels, and the higher the sun level the tighter and more pronounced the spines are, if your Echinocactus is getting mostly morning sun it may be not receiving as much direct sunlight as the previous owner kept it, ideally a south facing window is best for Echinocactus as they like a very high sun position, they will survive well in an east window but may tend to grow thinner at the growing point and spines won't be as strong, what you could do is install a LED Plant grow light and have this light on for 2-3 hours in the afternoons to give your Echinocactus an extra boost of sunlight, this will help to promote strong spines and growth, thanks so much for your wonderful comment and for watching, and sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a wonderful Wednesday XXXX

I have several of the grusonii, two really large ones I've had over 20 years. A handful of yearling seedlings that Deb gave me in a seed kit I started last year. Also an ingens and a really nice Echinocactus glaucecens about 8 in across coming into bud right now, this one is always a star performer and gets a crown of yellow flowers in the spring. I love the inermis, very different nice collection guys!!!! From Morris park in the Ozarks to across the Emerald isle have a great weekend!! And remember everyone, Peace , Love , Plants✌💖🌵

Lovely! Like your white spined barrel, I too have unsightly rust fungus on mine. I tried to cut some of the orange patches out which were just at the surface ‘skin’ and areoles, and it’s looking a bit of a mess! Anything I can do to help ? Anti fungal sprays? I think it came with the fungus from the garden centre, then despite being in a hot dry room all summer it still developed creamy beige coloured patches, then last winter in the cold porch worse orange patches developed. 😢 think I’ll keep it in the warm dry living room all year round in future.
@desertplantsofavalon
@desertplantsofavalon 5 месяцев назад
So sorry to hear you have the rust fungus on yours too Georgina :-D yes an anti fungal spray would help to prevent the fungus and if you can get a systemic fungicide spray that would be best as the systemics work all through the plants system to treat and prevent, you can also use Neem oil too as its a fantastic natural fungicide, but a systemic fungicide will work well, I use 'Rose Clear Ultra Systemic fungicide' for any of my cacti and succulents that have already got signs of rust and it seems to work well at stopping it spreading, thanks so much for your wonderful comment and support and for watching, and sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a terrific Thursday XXXX

O.M.Gosh Lyn @ 5.50 I had to rewind the video back 3 times just to see if I heard right ... when you said you’re bad at pronouncing names of Cactus’s, strangely I was talking to one of my friends last night over the phone about your channel (my friend loves cactuses also and has some very old ones) anyhow I was saying to her to join your channel bc Lyn has so so many and she knows what she’s talking about, very cluie lady and she can pronounce the proper name for each one of her cactuses and that she won’t be disappointed what so ever ... I hope she joins your channel she will definitely learn a LOT, I know I have. Thank you Lyn. 🌵
