Our Electric Car in Denmark 

Hi there! American here that's lived in Norway for almost 30 years now :) As you're probably aware, Norway is the "EV capitol" of the world so the charging infrastructure is excellent in this country. We're on our second EV now and will probably never go back to ICE. We live in Kristiansand, so that means we're more likely to travel to Denmark than Sweden for our vacations. We've had a mostly positive charging experience in your adopted country as long as one doesn't go off the beaten path. Last year we were in Grenaa and it was shockingly hard to find a charger. There was a single 50kw charger for the entire city! We absolutely needed to charge because we didn't have enough juice to make it to Randers. This meant waiting sever hours in Grenaa for the thing to be unoccupied....basically we wasted a whole day because of that because by the time we got to charge, it was too late to do anything else that day. Too bad, that. I also resent having to download an app to charge. This in general...not specific to Denmark. I suspect that the EU will step in and regulate eventually and set a standard for charging stations (Clearly posted prices like they have at gas stations and the right to pay with a normal bank card and such). Otherwise, I love my EV and charging at home is what I do most of the time just like you. By the way you actually should charge to 100% now and the (slow home charge) to balance the cells in the battery pack, but in general never fast charge to 100% at a charging station. I drive an E-Golf from 2019. It is my first EV. It is literally a Golf 7,5 with a battery instead of a regular engine. My parents just purchased a Mercedes EQE from 23. It is literally a car from the future. Everything looks like a spaceship inside, and the headsup display gives it sort of a Star Trek feeling. You can't even pop the hood on it.

When you say "kilo-watt" (power), you really mean "kilo-watt-hour" (energy), Josh 😊

You can go in the sat-nav and choose specific suppliers to search for, and also choose fast chargers only.

You only really need to have a few favorit chargers you get to know and travel denmark is not an issue. That said, most Circle K now have 300kWh Charger for roughly 3.88, and you find those in most cities. Been driving the KIA EV6 the past two years and often go from Aalborg to Roskilde.

In Fredericia you should always use the Tesla chargers. It’s cheaper and always available.

Congratulations on the car. Driving the Kona myself for almost four years, and is very satisfied. If you don't already have it, I would recommend you get a Charge MyHyundai account card, as it opens up the use of more than 500,000 chargers in Europe. Including Norlys (formerly Sperto), which are some of the cheapest chargers (around DKK 3.04 / Kwh with up to 300 kW.) When I started almost 4 years ago, I experienced a couple of times of the ranges but it is completely over today. There have been so many chargers in recent years that it is not a problem in Denmark. And here in Denmark you are quite good at repairing damage to chargers that are broken - at least compared to most of the USA, where it is actually only Tesla's NASC chargers that work. I have driven just about 100,000 km today, and compared to the fact that I had done it in my old Suzuki petrol car, I have saved around DKK 45,000 on fuel (electricity vs. petrol). It has been a bit more expensive in terms of tyres, as the car is heavier, but not so much that it really matters. And the best of all, it is a more pleasent drive, quiter, smoother, quicker if needed and so on.

Tell me you're not an engineer without telling me you're not an engineer. You seem to have switched kilowatts and kilowatt hours. Kilowatts is power, kilowatt hours are energy. You can think of kilowatt hours (kWh) as liters of gasoline. Like, it takes 20 kWh to drive 100km. And think of kilowatts (kW) as pump speed if you want to make a gasoline analogy. Say it takes 2 hours to charge 50 kWh that means that you can charge at an average of 25 kW. It's a little confusing, don't be discouraged, some engineering students also get confused about it when they're getting started. Good luck with the car :D

Congrats with the car. Weve got the Kia EV6, which shares technique with the ioniq5. We've been in croatia twice and in france once in it. The fast charging is great when on the go like that 😊

Congrats on the new car, we recently switched to a Tesla Y, which is nice in it's own way, but I would recommend you use the Tesla Superchargers when travelling in Denmark (no matter that it's not a tesla charging) their prices are currently VERY competitive!

I can totally relate to your experience in Fredericia. That place is a total mess with a dysfuncitonal layout and chargers that are broken for months without being fixed. However right next to freeway two new and very nice high speed charging stations just opened on Westfunen. Lillebælt Nord when you are west bound and Lillebælt south when you are eastbound. Skip Fredericia and use them the next time.

Vestas collaborated with OK to set up a charging station near near Odense that charges strictly from wind energy by synching a local battery bank (about 1,000 kWh worth) directly to a wind turbine located elsewhere. It could be an option if you have a desire to drive even greener. I don't have a car, so I can't provide any personal experience, but I understand it is a fast charger, and there may be two of them at that spot, which seems like a good stopping point between Copenhagen and Aarhus.

Having an IONIQ 5 myself I say you can charge to 100% on AC but don't let it stand still with 100% for days, For DC fast charging it's not worth the time to get from 80% to 100%. It's doing rebalancing of the batteries at 80% of charge. and then a slower rate from 80% to 100%. Btw never leave the car with a SoC below 20% as the 12 V battery will not be charged from the traction battery then. This could mean a 'dead' car (12 V discharged).

Uhh nice! Its nice to hear about, i dont know anyone with an Electric car so its nice to hear someone talk about it! I was planning on getting an EV when i got my licence, but we live in an apartment in a city that have next to no charging stations so its not so easy..

I live in the US, so know more about the US. We have a Tesla Model 3. We bought it over 5 years ago. We have done seven 2700 mile round trips from Boston to Iowa. And a number of shorter trips. The Tesla supercharger experience has been excellent. On over 200 supercharging sessions, we have had issues at less then 10 sessions. A few broken stalls, where we had to change stalls. One session where the supercharger stopped, and we didn't realize it for awhile. A few real busy stations where we had to wait. One asshole who had to park their car diagonally taking up two parking spaces. Here is the short answer about traveling with electric cars in the US and Europe: In North America: Traveling with a NACS Tesla is routine. Traveling with a CCS1 EV is an adventure. In Europe: Traveling with a CCS2 Tesla is routine. Traveling with a CCS2 EV is getting routine, still more of an adventure then a Tesla.

Det er ikke helt korrekt, at hvis du lader mere end 80% direkte skader batteriet. Problemet opstår, hvis batteriet er opladt max i længere tid ad gangen. Så hvis du lader til 100% men bruger bilen dagligt, så er der ingen problemer i det. Flere batterier har en gang imellem brug for at blive ladet til 100%, da bilen når den når 100% bruger tid på at balancere cellerne. Jeg har selv søsterbilen, en EV6.

I've had my Ioniq 5 for 2 years now and driven it to Croatia and back two times, it's excellent, especially with two kids, the interior space is awesome

Awesome. We have two Ev's, a Nissan Ariya and also a Hyundai IONIQ 5. We used to rent an apartment and therefore couldn't charge at home and relied on public chargers, it was no problem as we were surrounded by chargers. We just bought a house and one of the first things we did was installing a charger. It's a game changer having a home charger. We use Clever for charging, flat out the easiest and cheapest.

I wonder how they think making EV's more popular for people that can't have a home charger. People that live in apartments. You know, those who earn less than average. It's the majority, but often overlooked.

Awesome that you got an electric car, and I think it’s great that you just got out there, and drove. There are unfortunately some misconceptions when it comes to fast charging, and some of the operators don’t seem to care about foreigners and tourists, and so the pricing is really difficult to comprehend. If you hadn’t specifically chosen the Ioniq, I would always say stick to Tesla Superchargers, but those are currently limited to 400 V, thus decreasing the maximum charge speed on your car. What I would recommend though, are the gas stations. A lot of them actually have ultra fast chargers now, at least if you stick to main corridors. Look for Circle K (which should be familiar to you as an American 😊), Shell, Q8, Uno-X, etc. next time. The charging is actually only on DC charger, on AC charger its ok til charge it to 100%, according to you car manufactor.. :)

I have and old Tesla Model S p85 from 2013, it is starting to have many serius problems, had to change the main battery, very, very expencive. Good choice of u to go non-Tesla, 100 % agree with u about Musk. The new electic cars from other companies are just as good as the Teslas. But 1 thing Teslas have, are the access to the Supercharging network. It just works, all the time, without any problems. Hopefully there will be some regulation of the charging networks concerning price etc. Good vid, thx.

Hey Josh, great to hear your experiences with going EV. I completely concur that the Ioniq5 looks like it came straight from Back to the Future I remember us talking about this a few months back and I'm happy to say we also pulled the trigger and got us solar panels, a 3-phase charger and a Tesla Model Y Long Range. I completely agree with having range anxiety at first, but that is dissolving quickly and will be even less of a problem when we actually get our home-charger installed since we're still charging at a public charger in the street. Fun fact: ordering and installing a charger takes weeks to months whereas ordering and picking up the car took just five working days :) I'm interested to hear how the colder weather is affecting your range, as we are seeing quite a drop in range and power usage in this declining weather. We first got 540km on a full battery in the late fall of September, but those days are far behind us with these current temperatures ;)

electricity have not been cheapest at night this year.. we have so much solar and wind, so the cheapest prices are when the sun is out... and the way we use the power have changed alot, some people cant afford to cook or put a wash over between 17-20 when the taxes are 1kr higher for example so may people have to do those things late last year i had free electricity at night time (i only paid taxes) but not this year i also charge both my car and house batteries, and most of the time it is cheapest in the day time but it is probetly posible to get a deal with fixed prices where you get it a little cheaper at night.. but those deals are very rare cheap

Maybe an opetunithy for you to dive into the remarkable, explosion in the number of EVs on the road in Denmark? I shifted in 2019 and have passed 145k km by now. And am amazed by the speed of the shift.

There are definitely some of the charging companies that are overcharging their customers. The highest rate I’ve seen was over 30dkk, there is no justification for charging that much. I generally stick to clever, circle k, OK and eon. They are almost always under 5dkk. Also I agree the changing station at Nyborg is one of the better, when traveling between Jylland and Sjælland I prefer that over Fredericia.

I have a Camry Hybrid and can go about 500 miles on one tank, last fill up cost me$ 33.00 so drove to the Keys and almost back on one tank. Don’t have to wait 45+ minutes. But congratulations on your new car,I am happy for you. Safe traveling.❤️🇩🇰🇺🇸

Go for Uno-X (Like Nyborg), Circle K and Q-8 Chargers when you are on the road.... No B*****It, just pay with creditcard. And good charging hardware. Tesla V3 chargers does not work with Ioniq 5, V2 chargers does. (Drives an VW ID.3)

I use the same chargers and also uses Monta. An advice: don’t use the Monta app when charging on the charging network. It’s way too expensive. The they add to high cap on top. Instead “simply” use the app of the charge point operator at the charging site. Far cheaper. Pic three or four charging operators. Tesla, OK, UnoX are among the cheapest in that regard.

The rip off prices for electricity is absolutely terrible.

Aarhus is just a super nice city

You could also buy and install a charger your self, no subscription fees. You can program the car to only charge at night.

Is it plausibol to get a meetup, and show some of Denmarks smaller towns

You get my first like and thumbs up for not going down the hole of Elon Musk and Tesla. The dude might be smart and he might be rich, but it doesn't rule him out from being a major ***-Beep-beep!. So much that I will never go near any of his products. I have considered buying an electric car, but not owning a house where I can control and decide on a charger directly at my house makes it near impossible to get and own one. Secondly, to get the comfort, reach and all the other yummy stuff I look for in a car would have me looking at almost only Mercedes EQS and those are not cheap... My boss would either scream, toss me out - or both - if I wanted him to pay for one, and me? Yeah, right, I can dream about affording one on my own, but it would never come out as anything than an economic loss to buy one. The infrastructure is still lacking way too much. All the fuss with having exactly the right card, and/or app at the exact right charging place and hoping that all, or at least enough, of the charging poles are working makes it darn near impossible for someone that needs to be able to go in an instant. Hopefully it will work out in a decade or two, but by then I will be more concerned with having a solid bowel movement and a reliable stroller to lean on.

I have just seen a film with an Englishman, naming himself "The McMaster" and for some years driving an Electric Porsche, and telling about his problems with finding actually functioning EV Chargers, when driving Long Distance in the UK. He has lately made a Test driving and competing with an elderly Diesel BMW from John O'Groats to Lands End! The old BMW became the least expensive to use during this test!

The pricing when charging on the road is one of my biggest gripes with EV's, luckily I rarely have to do it. At the moment it feels like the companies opreting the charging stations are allowed to do whatever regarding pricing, to promote these companies to set up more chargers. At some point regulations will have to be made, to make pricing more transparent and uniform so that it resembles gas stations more. I can see some point in the future where EU creates laws similar to what they did for mobile operators for data rates when roaming.

Congratulations on your new EV :D I have been driving electric for a good two years - and I will never go back to an ICE car. I charge at home and on the go. I drive 25,000 km a year, so I have chosen a subscription with free electricity at home and on the go for DKK 699 per month. Last year I was in Stockholm, where my subscription also covers - yes actually Sweden, Norway and Northern Germany are reasonably covered. When you're on a "long trip" - I've heard that with the Tesla app you can get pretty good prices when you don't have a subscription. So it might be worth investigating. With the wish for many good electric trips in the future...

seems the charger market needs some price regulation. also the specs of the chargers should live up to some minimum watt

Please understand the correct units for power and energy: the energy your battery stores is measured in kWh, so 77 kWh for the full battery in your car. The power your charger delivers is measured in kW, so 11 kW. - Something like kW/h makes no sense.

I wonder why the utility companies haven't cornered the charging market. They could set consistent prices, maybe a higher price for fast charges, but it would make it more reliable and convenient for EV owners, I think.. Kudos to you for taking the 'green' step!

I am not shure that with modern batteries, it is a thing not to charge it to more than 80%. I think that is outdated if you by a car after 2020

The strange thing with the electricity refund thing from the government is, if you have solar electricity or heating panels on your roof, you do not get the money. Great looking and driving car. A shame that free parking for electric cars in the big cities will end from next year. I saw a video on RU-vid that you get the longest life out of your battery, if you only charge it in the 40 - 60 % range, which is only feasible if you only drive short trips LFP Batteries should have double as many cycles in them than the normal Lithium Ion Batteries.

I don't own a car myself, but i will pitch in due to my experience with filling up gas cars. Subscribing to a specific station with gas card, will often make you work a little for finding these stations. I'd assume that this like these situation with gascard's is mostly a matter of first time, after a while you'll know where the chargers are, and eventually the market will be more an more integrated into a streamlined experience as the development of technologies stagnates due to practicality vs. return of investments. Depending on how you refill a gascar and how cheap you are, i think its not really more work, its just different products, but the work is the same in amount and nature. But maybe my opinion on this changes with being an electric car owner in the future.

We love our Ioniq 5 car.. the silence.. the space every where.. Big flunk.. I Think we are addicted 😊.. we have a Clever deal.. so we shall never look at the Price.. 699,- pr. month.. and drive all we Can..

Why didn’t you use the Tesla superchargers? They are the cheapest option, even if you don’t pay their monthly subscription. There is one in Fredericia. There is plenty of room in each booth and plenty of chargers and I never, in 4 years met one that didn’t work.

For everyday commute, if you have a house that can be hooked up.. it's a no brainer to choose electric. It does get more complicated for the longer trips. Of course you'll have a break on a 3hr trip, but it makes sense to have enough battery for the whole distance. But EV enthusiasts don't usually listen to that argument... and they're right 80% of the time... because most trips will be way shorter. For instance MG has made some cars that has a too small battery and isn't capable of actual fast charging... but on all other parameters they're great. So it's basically city cars... but in the greater Copenhagen, we have trains for that. Then it doesn't make a lot of sense. Edit: yes, driving assistance rocks, especially on longer trips. You become more of a pilot than a driver when it takes over.

Good grief....so much more work to plan for a trip rather than just doing a "gas and go." I'm holding off on e-vehicles until things (pricing, locations, charging speeds, etc.) level out because all of the forethought involved is too stressful.

So why dont you just charge your car on the tesla chargers? They are open to other cars many places? 🤔.. and you Can see the pricese in the app all the time? 🤷‍♂️

Why not recharge at as Tesla site? Most of them are usable also for non-Tesla EV‘s.

Actually - In Frederica you also had Tesla charger. Off peak you would have paid 2,9 DKK / kWh without subscription. With (100 DKK a month) it would have been as low as 2,15 DKJ / kWh 🤓😁

There is something wrong with the units in your explanation. A kilowatt is a unit of electric power, which is defined as electric energy per time period (specificly, a kilowatt is 1000 Joule per second). If compared to gasoline from a regular gas station, the amount of kilowatts is comparable to the flow rate of gas, i.e. how fast the gasoline is flowing, for instance measured in gallons per minute or liters per second. This is why your electric bill is payed per kilowatt multiplied by hours (kWh), so you pay for the amount of energy you use, not how fast you use it. 🙂

Very nice revealing the nightmare of long trips with electric cars. Should they not be limited to short trips and shift to petrol on long trips? The newest electric cars are Plug-In Hybrids. They have electricity for 49 kilometres and petrol for the rest. Further more they charge the electric part by themselves. So no 12 Kr pewr Kilowatt.!

Juat saw a video on Instagram from a guy that went by the name Den Japanske mand i Århus. He shows you just how good a foreigners danish can be after 12 months in Denmark. He orders food from MacD and is basically perfect with no accent ot anything. So no, as ive said before it can be done in months and not years. Its not just the wives of our princess. Normal people too do these things.. 😎

Can you charge where Tesla charges? Because this is the sole reason, I why I am almost only considering Tesla. Especially because I fantasize about driving all over Europe in a Model Y. I might be too tall to sleep in it but still. :P :D

Fredericia well at least it was not Middel speed or if you like middel flatulence ( Middelfart ) 😁 The price for a KWh at least on average, well you dont get it much more expensive anywhere in the world, TBH i do feel they are ripping us off here, tax payers funding " free " wind power for decades but still get ripped off well at least some / most times of the day / week / month. If you have variable KWh prices, well on some windy days you can get almost free power. If you generate power yourself, say with solar, it is my understanding you can sell off surplus to the grid for a fixed low price, but then if you later want to buy power back from the grid, you have to pay the probably much higher price. that to me is just totally unacceptable. I have been contemplating a EV for my next car, but TBH i dont think i will be able to do that, i for sure will want to be able to charge the car at home or very - very close to home, CUZ generally i see no reason to pay a middleman too even if they of course have the right to make money and pay for the charger you put up. And the number of public chargers have to come way up too, in the larger towns but also out in the sticks where i indend to move once i am done caring for my dear old mother.

Never charge at Clever if you don't have a Clever subscription. They have a stupid all inclusive strategy that should be illegal, and should never have been given so much space for their charging station.

Congrats on the new car. But an EV isn’t really a choice for me, since I live in an apartment building here in Copenhagen or a condominium to be specific. And I can’t charge an EV at home or spend time driving around the city to charge my car. And I heard in the Danish news a couple of days ago, that’s a reason why some city folks are concerned about buying or leasing an EV. When EV’s are just as fast to charge as it takes to fill up a gasoline/diesel powered car or even a hydrogen powered car then we come a long way and more people probably buy/lease electric vehicles. Next car for me is still a gasoline or hybrid/plug in hybrid. Right now a drive an almost ten year old Toyota and that just drives perfectly still though. So I won’t be buying a new car in the foreseeable future

So lame there isnt a system where EV owners buys into a subscription service for cars that can get an instant-swap of the battery; so you can drive into a service station and have it swapped by robots. It shouldnt take more than a few min once the car is stopped at the right spot. That way the re-charging is over in minutes, and you will always have a battery with max amps. additionally, it would feel much more like the "regular" way of doing things. You drive in, get her filled and then youre off again

The whole electric car is all about how much money you save pr. kilometer which to me is such a turn off. Dno i just like cars not how much i can save on everything i do.

I'm surprised you didn't go for a Tesla being American and all. However, Hyundai has really stepped up their game in the EV space - the Ioniq series look like very nice cars.

I feel sorry for you, I'll stick to my Lincoln Navigator which runs on both LPG and gasolin, so I can drive around 1400 km or 875 miles before refueling takes 5-8 minutes

Hi there. I have made a ton of research in like 1 year ahead, before i bought my EV (renault Megane 100 & electric, Iconic) And choosed to have a Clever box and sub. I know i dont drive as much, so Clever sub is way to expensive (799 DKK. pr. month) but i chose it for the options. i can drive from copenhagen to Skagen without thinking, there is highspeed charging all over, and even AC (22 kw/t) by many Føteks and Bilka supermarked, so while you shopping you can easely get a 22 kw/t on your car. So if you want freedom then choose clever. (if you drive a lot like min. 2500 km pr. month then always clever) If you want the chepest and drive under 2500 km pr. month, i will charge on Teslas superchargers if you can, if not then clever and circel K´s
