Building a house in the Philippines is not an easy task, especially if you don't want to live on a building site as a Foreman and project manager.
So we looked up prefab house build companies in the Philippines and found CUBO Modular www.cubo.com.ph/ . They are Modular home specialists and use sustainable materials and techniques to build homes for Filipinos. Engineered Bamboo is their choice of material and they even take into account Typhoon & Earthquake resistance. In this video we visit the CUBO Modular factory in Quezon city Metro Manila to see the final result of our custom Cubo design, we walk around a Fully constructed Sarangani model modular home and also talk to the team about their brand new house builder website which is an incredible step forward for the Philippines and house construction concepts in this country. We are very excited to have a home built by them in the near future.

Architects and engineers must hold themselves up during scientific inquiry, but apparently the Cubo people have refused to share detailed studies and specs. This according to a poster a few months ago. Being in my late 60s I think this couple are being too naïve and hubristic. I would love for the plan to succeed but only hope they never experience a storm like they did - the video of them screaming when the glass blew out and running to hold their baby was just too horrific to see repeated. I can still see the picture in my mind.

Hi Jay and Sasha, thank you for sharing your vlog about cubo house. I’m glad that you take your time in building your Cubo house. Last year, I visited my family in the Philippines. They lived in a nice Subdivision in Manila. Their house are made of Concrete and wood. They have this beautiful door made of wood and it was eaten by termites and they couldn’t opened it anymore. With that in mind. I hope you consider building a house made of concrete it’s durable than wood. At the end of the day it’s your decision. I wish that you both make a right decision and build the house that is right for your family. Take care, god bless and to you all. 🙏❤️😊

Really enjoyed the video and watch the learning curve. We built our house in Camotes around 2017/2018 time frame. A bit larger but done in traditional concrete and steel. Not a single stick of wood in the house other than furniture. You are quite right about having treated bamboo and steel as your choice. Structurally, bamboo is almost a miracle material and the bonus is it is renewable. GOOD choice, especially here in the Philippines. I have survived 2 large typhoons here, and two earthquakes of 6.7 and 6.9 in strength and have literally no damage. Many thanks for your in depth thought process on your build design and your explaining your timing choices. Very sound thinking on those items. I hope you can control the budget from now to the beginning of next year. I found out the hard way here, a road into your place can be expensive. Mine was over 500 meters long as we live back away from the road a good bit and also have almost 200 feet of elevation rise from the public road to our home site. We have a 80 meter stretch that has a 26 degree upward grade. Can be tricky to navigate as it by necessity is only 1 lane wide. Fortunately our vehicle is a 4 wheel drive Ford Pick up and handles it easily. For budget reasons, I would suggest you do as much land prep as you can yourselves, or hire locally day labor to get small sections modified to suit your needs. We hire locally because as my wife originated here, there are MANY in need of day work, and we have used teams of 3 to 6 with a focused work scope to efficiently get things done. I am following your VLOG with enthusiasm.

I love that you decided to build the land first and put the house build on hold until late next year. It would be very exciting to see and watch how you build your land, maybe vlog the progress, i would love to see a little farm (or in your case a little backyard) in thier too, wanna see Sacha build her garden along with your aquaponics system and all your seeds and greens. And once everything is settled maybe some additional vlog/content like backyard to table, or harvesting, etc.

It's nice you're doing this. I've been watching a lot of alternative building materials videos and I observed that a lot of Filipinos are really hesitant to try new stuffs. Either a container house/SRC panels/engineered bamboo, etc. People are scared that the build will not be strong enough, not typhoon proof, not earthquake proof, etc. This is a good test. Having a modular bamboo house in Siargao. Whether or not the house will withstand typhoon, this is a great opportunity to see it. I'm pretty sure you guys will give an extensive coverage. I will follow the progress closely. This is a great service to those like me who's thinking about buying something like this in the future I had experience working with contractors here in the Philippines and it's really stressful. That's me, a native speaker and there's still issues in communication. I agree, just take it slow, less stress financially and mentally. I'm sure with the modifications, this build will be expensive.

I live in a hurricane prone area and when ever a storm is coming close there are two types of houses that are mandated to evacuate mobile homes and modular or prefab homes as they simply do not stand up to wind. For perspective wood and concrete homes are only required to leave if they are directly on the ocean or in a proven flood plane and even then its usually just a recommendation not mandatory. Of course materials could differ and a strong material with a proper anchor may be ok but at this time none meet basic new construction laws

this is a nice touch but maybe you can ask the cubo team to try it on a very heavy rain or storm . if they have a system to check on how strong the house cn withstand a storm, that cn help more. I live in guam, and most of our houses are built in concrete even roof,. Mawar hit us recently and most of the houses that were destroyed were built on wood and tin roofing. just a thought . just don't want u guys to waste ur money for something that won't even last on typhoon season.l, most especially philippines is located to shield most of it

Hi guys. Been following your Cubo project. I don't blame you for liking the looks and the concept . I do also. so......Here are my thoughts. If the Cubo addresses all the concerns people have, then go for it. I am not an engineer or a builder, but have had about 10 houses built in my old lifetime. Two here (in Cebu) others in US. So, I do understand the many options for building. There is no such thing as a perfect house. The one I am living in now was built by a not so good contractor which gives me (high wind)concerns, but that's another story. Yes it is concrete. Here are my thoughts on the Cubo, after looking at their site. I did a quick cost on a base price and my takeaway was wow ,expensive per Sq.M. That was before adding in the options, site costs, etc. etc. KerryTarnow s channel looks at hundreds of factory homes around the globe. Ck it out if you haven't already. Almost every comment he receives have the main complaint as cost being way more than conventionally built. (with exception of a few) He always states the price at time of the videos, but not delivery for obvious reasons. A fun channel to watch that will give you many ideas . As I said, I am not an engineer, but my thinking the weight of the Cubo is light. Not doubting the strength of their material, but so is carbon fiber. If a house wall was made of that, it wouldn't stop wind from blowing it away, hence the reason mobile homes(trailers delivered on wheels) in the US have to be tied down to the foundation. So IMHO another issue with the Cubo is the weight. Yes, concrete block is crap here (falls apart if you drop one), but it is heavy, along with the additional mortar and steel. There are two other companies here making better block using different materials, and another company that makes a steel mesh through styrofoam (insulation) wall panels that is then stuccoed. CK. these out. I have never used an architect in my house adventures, but I'm thinking now it's maybe a good idea, being they might actually cost no more and save you money in the long run, as well as good advise. One I follow and really like is OLIVER AUSTRIA A young Filipino architect. Has great ideas for small spaces like the ones you liked.I urge you to check him out. I know you'll like his style. If I build again I will definitely contact him. I know you have invested much time with Cubo and at this point probably feel an obligation to go with them. (I would also). But it's a huge lasting costly decision, so do it wisely and with your "gut" feeling. Hope this helps 😀

Despite your experienced advice this couple don’t seem to take advice well. A few months ago an engineer tried to steer them away from this flimsy construction and lack of proof that it will hold up during severe storms. They still insist.

Saying the material is stronger than concrete because it has higher tensile strength isn't impressive. Concrete has very little tensile strength and that's why it's always reinforced with steel.

Im glad you postponed the finalizing or having the house ready by this year. Give yourself time and fix the landscape of your land puttng sewage and other things that needed to be able to fit the house. Just one question, can they make the house rounded? There is a house in Florida that was round and was able to survive the storm that devastated Miami Florida. Just wondering, please ask if that is possible to do?

The model doesn’t show storage rooms and built in walk in closets. You need it very badly. The architect must help you in this design process. Kitchen must be spacious and and must always have 2 spacious bathrooms to begin with. I saw Jalousie window. I thought that is not strong. I knew when I was still in the Philippines we can’t leave the house unless a cousin of us stays. I heard it’s easy to break in.That’s just my opinion Jay and Sasha.Good luck and we are very happy to have you in the island of Siargao,Philippines. God bless your family.

I live in a hurricane prone area Florida and when ever there is a mandatory evacuation it includes mobile homes and prefab homes anywhere in the whole county. I get it when ppl have no other choice but to live in one as finances prevent soild construction materials but they are usually associated with very high risk if living somewhere with high winds. I do imagine that a company COULD make a prefab that is sturdy and anchor it well to a foundation of concrete or similar material but at least here they do not do that. They move and break apart just like any other mobille home or shed

The ‘experience’ is extremely basic, just standard sales talks and a floor plan. How many actually finished Cubo houses have the couple seen that have had direct hits from typhoons? Also what’s the oldest one that the couple have inspected? And in what type of situation? Again, yes, there are poor examples of concrete building, when done to an insufficient budget and quality. There are also awesome examples. Why try to ignore them to satisfy the bias? For instance my concrete house on Siargao is around 15 years old, was in the worst hit town, and sheltered many people during the typhoon. It is in awesome condition, and I certainly wouldn’t give up my comfort and luxury to live in what is basically a caravan. I believe you could get a quite good house in the style being looked at, but the cost would be more than an excellent concrete building. And the longevity hasn’t been extensively proven like concrete building has in the Philippines. The budget has already blown out, along with the timeline. Common when inexperienced people suddenly become building experts,

From what I understand from their video, this is their first actual experience of looking around a Cubo house. Going round a house in a factory/showroom is very different to seeing one on site and after some years of being lived in. This house has to withstand extreme climatic conditions and potentially catastrophic events like typhoons. Aside from that how does engineered bamboo fare in high humidity or are they going to return to warped floorboards when they return from one of their extended trips away? I think the overall costs in this build are going to be much higher than they anticipate and I would seriously question what they would manage to recoup of that investment as and when they decide to move on and try to sell it.

Yes I agree. I think they are totally nieve and seem to want to follow what is fashionable at the time rather than being practical (like the constant promotion of a vegan lifestyle because it's trendy). these things are a novelty. you live in a very small island. you won't have to travel far to your building site. just design and build your home the traditional way.

no awnings? its a must have for homes here in the philippines.

Absolutely. Big roof overhangs are important for shading (passive cooling) and rain protection.

The house is missing roof overhangs. That is really important for shading and weather protection, especially in the tropical climate.

Are there interests to be charged for postponing the build? Anyhow, another upside to not rushing the house and give proper prepp'ing to the location is the likelihood of Cubo developing materials that could be more efficient, better engineered, more suitable to the landscape and location such as Siargao, etc. Rushing it for a certain occasion like Christmas many Pinoys are wont to do (I personally know of a couple of people in my circle, 2 of whom ended up selling their "dream home/s" for one reason or other (financial/sustaining; 1 an unplanned addition to the family) less than 2 years of moving in, and is therefore not (always) the most pragmatic factor in finalizing decisions.

My advice is to have a fully concrete house with a deep pillars to the ground (including the roof just like the house you were currently renting) coz the only prob u had in typhoon was the window that is positioned infront of the beach (and that window is big and full glass that is why its so vulnerable from strong winds) . Next is to atleast have a 2nd floor or more since u were on an island that is prone for typhoons and maybe a tsunami. Having a metal or steel in a place surrounded by sea water is a NO NO! Don't get fooled by sales talk we all know that . Godbless and take ur time !

Philippines is a typhoon path and I doubt it that bamboo can withstand a strong typhoon that destroyed Siargao and other areas. Most of the houses that survived were made of concrete. That's the reason why Filipino used it for so many years. That's my humble opinion.
@quesee08
@quesee08 Год назад
There are very few bamboo houses in philippines hence you only see concret house after typhoon. But the average compressive strength of bamboo is about 14,000 pounds per square inch (psi). Compare that to the compressive strength of concrete, which is about 2,500 psi. Bamboo is much stronger than concrete that is just science. For strength against typhoon, there are many factors as mentioned already.

What will destroy homes are flying debris that will hit structures at a high rate of velocity.

Lets wait and see... As I observe, that this is not the bamboo referred to but a proccesed bamboo... bahay kubo is tested and proven that can withstand typhoons... and, not because it is mostly made of bamboo that it is successful, but because of its design and the techniques of building it...
@quesee08

@@henceldeanon9233 I agree that's why I said there are other factors involve in making it typhoon resistant. But bamboo is certainly much stronger than concrete which makes it one factor

Minimalist is nice, but what happens if you start cluttering it up with all kinds of stuff and it starts to look tacky. Not to mention the lack of studies of what will happen when a typhoon or hurricane hits.
@chanterelles4530

They are not minimalist. When they moved into their current house they bought so much stuff instead of waiting for all their belongings to arrive from Portugal. The house next door that they also rented accommodated a lot of the excess and duplicate items like blenders etc, but this Cubo house won't cope with clutter that they currently have, especially since letting go of the second house.

The question I have about Cubo is that, if it can last 50 years, would it be "after 50 years" be considered condemnable? Or it would just be a time when you need to start fixing things?

So you can custom design the pre-fab house ? How strong is the engineered bamboo? Can it withstand the different weather condition in philippines ? And do they shipped overseas?
