Our favorite chicken breed, the Australorp

The Australorp originated in Australia in the 1920s. They are Australias version of the Black Orpington. Australorps are known for being a dual-purpose breed - this means that they’re used for both the eggs they produce and the level of meat you’ll get from them if you decide to process the bird. They were bred for brown egg production without sacrificing in size and quality of the meat.
The Australorp was one of the first birds we had when we decided to raise chickens. We purchased 8 Black Australorps because we’d heard about how great they are with people. They didn’t let us down. Even as young chicks and pullets, they’re the sweetest of the flock.
The American Poultry Association recognizes the Australorp as a pure bred in its original color only - Black. The Black Australorp is beautiful especially in the sun - with the bounce of the sun’s light, you’ll notice a beautiful green sheen giving a gorgeous iridescence to the feathers.
The average life expectancy of the Australorp is 6-10 years. They are a robust and healthy heritage breed and there are no special considerations for this easy-going hen. The usual attention to parasites and other minor issues of chickens is all you need to be diligent about. They are a very hardy breed that will do well in hot and cold climates, however, because of the Australorps intensely beautiful black feathering, they need access to shade 24/7.
If you’re looking for a family-friendly breed that’s easy to care for, will lay a bunch of eggs, will fit in well with your current flock, and will return the love you have for them, look no further than the Australorp.
We hope you enjoyed this video! If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to leave a comment below. Also, don’t forget to hit that subscribe button!

So good to hear considering the 1 australorp "pullet," Tiny, i have just made a very strange noise, lol. Tiny is extremely friendly and sociable, very curious and bold. Just hope my EE rooster doesn't mind too much. Should have known Tiny was a roo thr first time I saw "her" charge a sparrow who got stuck in their enclosure.

I bought Australopes and Orpington at the same time. I’m trying to decide which is which. Half or them have some white on their faces and chest. The feathers are mostly black. They are 4 weeks old now. The other half have back faces and black feathers with some lighter colored ones. They are all pretty forward and pick at my fingers if I let them. At first I was a bit afraid of the advances. We are still 4 weeks away from the coop arriving so they are all in a big dog crate in the basement. Summer decided to get up in the 90s so I brought them into the basement from a rabbit hutch out in the sun. Also at the same time I got 6 guineas. I’ve learned they are wild, and I try to not frighten them too much. Moving from pen to crate to pen has traumatized them enough. After looking at this video I’m pretty sure the austrolorps are the ones with the while streaks thru their face and breast. They are a little smaller than the orps but are growing tail feathers faster. They seem to enjoy being talked to and have taken to the sticks I put in as perches. They were pruned from sycamores and mulberry trees this year. I’m a new chick mom and am plucking along. I’ve discovered owning them is much more expensive than buying eggs but with the planned famine, I didn’t want to be food less. They are keen to snap at little flying bugs in the basement and seem quite proud of themselves. The orps are more dominant and barge around wherever they want regardless of any chick in its way. While the aussies seem content to sit on-a perch or nest right on the floor in groups. I’m having fun with them and hope to make friends. Once they start eating other foods, I’m sure I know how to get their interest.

I'm not from Australia but I'm pretty sure it has to be pronounced like the first syllables in ''Äustralia"' because it comes from Australian Orpington, portmanteau AUSTRAL-ORP. My favourite breed, whose name is the most misspelt 😀

You won’t regret it. We have Rhode Island Red hens (which an Australorp is half RIR and half Orpington) and they’re so sweet and funny. We call them when we come outside: “c’mere girrrls!!” and they come running. They know when I come home from work and run up to greet me like a dog. They are our pets and anyone that doesn’t have chickens in their life are missing out!!!

@@fightneagle1255 I got 10 of them last august so mine are about 8 months. They started egg laying at about 5 months. They are friendly chickens but as my other ones they don’t like to be touched even though we held them a lot as babies. They free range and have been good girls. But I think my favorite so far are the golden comets we got a few months ago. They’re not afraid of people at all and love to be around us.

@@poisonfortheweak I am hoping to free range mine. The only problem is a few stray dogs roam through here from time to time. I just hope they don't like chicken otherwise they may end up eating some hot lead! I made their coup/roost out of an old shed. When I was about 12 or 13 I used to climb on top of it with a fishing pole with a plastic grub worm on it and try catching them. 😂😂😂 It was fun to watch them chase it through the yard, I even hooked one a couple of times. I never could reel them in though. I should have had my ass busted and probably would have had my parents known what I was doing 😁

Do you find that your australorps are fairly quiet? I have 1, and she roars a bit when aggitated, but she is very quiet, and rarely even sings the chicken song when she lays an egg. That is my kind of chicken, because although we all have 1.5 acres....they all back up to each other, and sometimes my others are rather noisy, and I do not want to get my neighbors to call on me. I thought we were allowed to have hens, but turns out we don't...so at any time I could have to dissolve my flock. I have 7. My Australorp lays nearly every day since she started, and it is always a large egg. I have some Wyandottes who lay, but their eggs are small - and okay for cooking and scrambled eggs...but I prefer the larger eggs for me, for over-easy breakfast. I think I am going to swap some of my others, for more Australorps....my Australorp is the Head Hen - and rules the coop, although she is the sweetest to me, and only one that welcomes me to hold her.

@CaliCluckers
@CaliCluckers 3 года назад
Barred Rocks can look similar when they're younger - the babies are mostly black with some white feathering, especially on their heads. At 6 weeks you should see a noticeable difference in feathering. Barred Rocks will have black and white feathering while Australorps will remain completely black.

I have 4 Australorps, 2 hens 2 Roosters. I bought eggs to incubate because I had read about them and liked them. After 6 months I don't really like them, the Roosters attack me. They are not great free range birds, they just stick to the coop and the area inside the coop fence. The gate is open but they don't know that they can get out. They are not very smart, I dropped all sides of their coop fence but left a corner up, just a corner nothing else, and that's where they sat looking out like that were fenced in. They will run up and down the fence looking like they are trying to get out, but the gate is open. My Plymouth Rock's don't have a problem and understand fence's and gates. If fact thePlymouth Rock's will come and peck on my door and make a racket vocally if they don't make it into the coop automatic door on sunset, they know exactly what to do in that situation, much smarter bird.

Is it better to put sand in the coop? Please reply! BTW, beautiful video. I just receive my days old ones!
@CaliCluckers
@CaliCluckers 3 года назад
Thank you for the kudos! You have to use a particular sand if you're going to go with sand in the coop. The best sand to use is construction, bank run or river sand. This stuff looks like what you would see on a river bed, it contains multiple sizes of particles including small pebbles etc. It's great for the birds’ grit intake.

Daughter of The Most High God I’ve not heard of putting sand in the coup but that doesn’t mean people don’t do that, I’m just wondering why sand? I buy and use rice hull. It seems to work better than pine shavings for keeping the odor down.

I purchased 4 Australorp chicks in April. It is now mid-August. Two of the chicks developed deep red combs and wattles longer and faster than the other chicks. I can’t tell any difference yet on how their tail feathers are forming. Is that and indication that these two could be roosters? I live within city limits where roosters are prohibited. 😔 I guess I wait to hear the rooster crow to know for sure.

You can absolutely butcher them in that time frame. They will start laying at about 20-24 weeks. Australorps are really good layers, and can be butchered as early as 16 weeks, but full maturity will be more like 28 weeks, but you can still butcher them at a year or year and a half and still be great tasting birds.
