Aliens with that sort of technology shouldn't be in need of anything from another civilization. The aliens could have just used that power to get what they needed without bargaining with mankind.

This seems unrealistic. I like the tension and the visual communication, but humans wouldn't flatly refuse an alien ship's request. The potential for friendship and technological vast riches, and danger of upsetting them, would cause humans to cooperate. There is no choice and anyone given authority to communicate with them would know that.

This is a defeated race with old technology and energy manipulation that humans do not have in exchange for human emotion they no longer have. Who did they lose to to come to us for help?
