What most people don’t realize is land rovers are great rigs BUT ARE MOSTLY DRIVEN IN VERY ROUGH AREAS SO THAT IS MOSTLY WHY THEY BREAK . HAVE HAD BOTH TROOPYS AND LAND ROVERS IF KEPT UP BOTH ARE VERY RELIABLE . ( Have had two troopys and three landys . Liked the landys more . ) Had almost the same thing happen with are first troopy . ( One of the joys of over landing 😂 In far off countrys on rough tracked country roads and paths . ) Thanks for sharing your thoughts and adventures good and bad on this awesome adventure journey your on with us all your over landing friends tagging along for the very enjoyable ride. .. Cheers from Steve Stott in Sutherlin Oregon U.S.A. :) :) 🌍🍻👍🏼😁.

Cheers Steve! Thanks for that comment coming from someone who has driven both Landrover and cruisers. Most people that write sarcastic comments about “should have taken a land cruiser” haven’t driven both to experience problems with either. Fact is our Landy nearly 25 years old nearly 300,000 kilometres on the clock has taken us 15k kilometres through Africa with just a break pipe going wrong. I have 100% faith and trust in our Landrover and indeed any Landrover that as you say has been properly maintained and prepared for a trip like this. If the above is done then your Landy will take you anywhere (and back). always great to hear from you Steve! Thanks for your support on every video. Cheers Harry & Chloe

Liquid Steel is a must in my tool kit.. there’s other options that are similar like the 2 part plasticine , the Metal variety. I’ve used these products on cracked crankcases, holes in radiators and punctured fuel tanks and it’s always got me through. Good luck to you guys 👍

Always carry some bent over brake flares when you pop a line just undo the line at the abs pump put on the blank and drive on 3 brakes. Or bend the pipe over a couple of times

Keep up the good spirit, you'll find a solution. They say it's not an adventure if nothing can go wrong 🙂. Easy for me to say when I'm watching this from the comfort of my home. I'm currently converting an Pinzgauer 710M to do the same trip one day, and surely i'll have to face my loads of problems and challenges too, it's part of the adventure.

I've had that brake line break as well... it was rather harrowing because I was going down an incline just after Pandamatenga (Botswana) heading to Kasane doing about 120 km/h in my Defender (which feels like you're flying🤣). A game viewer with two tourists joined the road, and I figured I would just overtake them because they driving really slowly but then as we got close and i took the lane to overtake, the driver quickly turned on to the lane I was in at which point I slammed the brakes and NOTHING. I remember looking to my left and thinking "I'm going to point this car into the bush" and looking to my mate on the passenger seat thinking "He's got 2 sons and his wife is waiting for us in Kasane"....Luckily I didn't have to drive into the bush and managed to miss the game viewer vehicle by what felt like a hair. Immediately after that three guys sat silently in the car breathing deep sighs. The silence was broken by my mate's phone ringing. It was his wife checking how far we were because we were about to miss the boat ride on the Chobe. He calmly responded "we'll be there in 15 minutes" to which she said "Ok cool, please hurry", totally oblivious to the situation we had come out of. I drove from Kasane to Khwai, to Maun and back to Gaborone with no brakes and had a whole new pipe made. Those pesky brake lines!!🤣

A butt join is never going to work. You need to either sleeve it with pipe the next diameter up, so the break has some physical strength and the solder has more area to cover. Or crimp and solder that branch, so you just run on 3 brakes, and then replace the whole line when you get back to civilisation.

I couldn't help notice at 4:37min and 9:52min the rusted out brake pipe bracket on top of the diff. Might want to try and secure it somehow otherwise your other brake lines will crack if you don't. As for the brake pipe, I would've taped up the caliper side of the break to keep dirt out and blocked the broken end off by hammering the end flat and folding the flat part over on itself and hammering it flat again to seal it off and continued on until it could be repaired properly.
@TheLandyExpedition
@TheLandyExpedition 10 месяцев назад
You are absolutely right it’s that bracket that broke and then took the brake pipe with it. I ended up fixing in a similar way is playing the brake on that side. Cheers! H

A broken brake line on an old vehicle can happen to anyone. Some time ago I replaced the Cu rear brake tubing with a flexible supplied by Hel. That will never fatigue or work harden. I am currently overlanding near Pretoria in my 32 year old Def. I don't get involved in the battle of the marques however I have observed that there are no 32 yr old Japanese 4x4s overlanding here. I guess they got scrapped years ago.

Don't bother soldering it, it's not strong enough, your brake pressure is somewhere potentially very high PSI (Several sites claim 600psi (40.81 BAR) but I'm sure I've had up to 50 BAR on the brake pressure from the diagnostics reader) so a solder joint will literally blow apart. Solder is soft! You need to carry spare pipe and a proper brake flaring tool AND know how to use it. Just put a bleed nipple in the port and lose the rear brake(s) until you can fix the pipe with a new pipe! It's broken as the pipe is unsupported and costantly vibrating. which means you need to up the weekly checks. As you don't have ABS I'd be locking the rear pipe off at the master and driving carefully. you'll have even braking and no chance of slewing under reasonable braking. Then replace pipe when you find a decent garage facility.
@TheLandyExpedition

You are absolutely right. If anything it needed to be braised which wouldn’t held but I didn’t have braising rods… was killing time trying to fox it the wrong way. But there we go 😀

Guys, soldering brake lines is one of the worst idea and the worst example to the viewers ever. Flexible fuel hose with clapms even worse. I have never seen sth like this. There can be up to 200 bars in brake system during max effort. Such a soldered connection will always fail. Dont struggle so much, this brake line is useless. You could have flat hammered this line temporarly, bleed as much as possible and when you get to town please make new entire line, no connections, please guys... Im writing this becouse your are nice and very very adorable, brakes are critical, check your brake fluid level once a day, it takes 10 sec and can save lifes. Stay safe and give a sign that you have replaced entire line 🧑‍🏭
