Yes, that baroque section is, in fact, Bach. It is the Allemande from his first French Suite. In my freshman year music theory class in college (1974), my jaw dropped when my professor started playing it on the piano!

Fun Fact: In 1974 I was driving in Sacramento near the American River with my ex girlfriend Marie. We were listening to Knife Edge. The road we were on had a succession of stop signs and on the last one we slowed down at the exact rate the end of the song did to a complete stop. Marie and I just looked at each other and burst out laughing omg it was a once in a lifetime moment.

Good story ! A similar thing happened to me when Pink Floyd’s DSOTM first was being played by FM stations. Exactly the moment I pulled into a highway toll booth to throw change in the basket, the song “Money” came on with those cash register sounds.

@@thomascanfield9165 same album I was in Stockton California at University of Pacific and watching a lunar eclipse through a friend’s telescope playing my 8 track of Dark Side Of The Moon. I was literally sitting on the grass while David sang the lunatic is on the grass in 1975.

Me too, I was lucky enough to see ELP 5 times, they did Tarkus in its entirety 3 times and a condensed version twice. Awesome every time but we thought the Yale Bowl was going into orbit in 1974! 😎

My parents are big into classical music and I heard a lot of it growing up. When I first heard this song I recognized the melody and after some research I figured out it is taken from a piece called “Sinfonietta” by Czech composer Leoš Janáček. The middle section is also taken from a piece by Bach. Interesting how ELP take these old classical pieces and turn them into a whole different beast!

Maybe the best example of "a whole different beast" is how Emerson turned old English folk song "Lovely Joan" into "Touch and Go".

emerson loved to take existing classical music or other and put his mark on it. when he was with the nice, he did 'america' from west side story and really pissed off Bernstein and Sondheim, the original writers. He would use knives onstage to hold down the chords. He was a hand grenade in concert, playing the keys upside down and backwards. on take a pebble, from this album, he plays the strings on the inside of the piano. he was known as 'the master of 13 keyboards', and was just a phenom.

The first time, i heard ELP was in Germany December 1970. Live performance in the "Beat Club". I was thrilled and captured for ever. ELp is the most amazing Group ever!

I love the sound of early synthesizers. I think that great keyboard players and composers, like Emerson, were developing the concepts and themes that could be played on these exciting new electronic instruments.

Awhile ago I read up on Keith's career and loved the description of him as an adolescent - the classically trained nerd with sheets of music always under his arm, but who also learned to rock out and play for his classmates so the bullies would give him a break. He was quite the showman - saw them in 72', my first concert at age 15 !

Keith Emerson was such an accomplished and inovative pianist/keyboardist. I was 13/14 in ’72 and he and all of ELP were gods to me and my musician friends. RIP Keith.

Greg Lake has such a pure voice. This song really shows off their amazing skills as instrumentalists and the amazing power they could put out as a trio. Love the tempo changes too. ELP, King Crimson, Genesis, Yes and Pink Floyd were the giants of prog rock of the early 70’s. Love your energy and positivity.

I of course, have heard of ELP, but this is the first time I hear a song from them. I liked how the singers lyrics matched the bass occasionally in the first half of the song. The keyboard playing throughout was really great. That deflating ending was amazing.

I lucky enough to hear this album when it was released, courtesy of my older brother. My first gig was when I was 13 seeing ELP in Glasgow in 1971. They were great. This track was a stand out live.

Your first two exposures to ELP was basically Emerson, LAKE and Palmer. Greg Lake doing his amazing acoustic guitar and singing with a bit of Keith and Carl. Now you're beginning to hear Emerson, Lake and Palmer. It's all great, but Keith was the dominant force in the music, supported by the master musicianship of Greg and Carl. Greg w-periodic assistance from Pete Sinfield, created the lyrics while Keith did a lot of the composing of the musical lines. Karn Evil 9 is the masterpiece, in my mind ... but needs to be heard in all of the three parts. Enjoy the rabbit hole ... it's a wonderful place to be. Exploring the Nice would help you understand the genius of Keith Emerson and the seed for ELP. Keith was the standard bearer for almost all of the progressive keyboardists.

@@LarryNeie-lj7zc Thank you. Living in Southern California, I was honored to attend his Memorial Concert at the El Rey with an all-star cast of fellow genius musicians. Most attendees were industry types and performers, so I felt a bit special. At one point, while standing in the restroom line, I was able to speak with Jeff "Skunk" Baxter, who was performing, and what an incredibly nice guy he was. Just a good human being. At different times of the night I was standing close to many of the others, but I respected their purpose. Jordan Rudess flew all the way from NYC to play Tarkus, then flew back after the show. I saw ELP at the now defunct Long Beach Auditorium during their Tarkus/Pictures tour. Was not lucky enough to see the Nice, but have every note they published on vinyl. All bright stars in the musical universe.

Keith Emerson and his earlier band The Nice recorded with a symphony orchestra The Five Bridges Suite. It’s a deep deep cut. The song Trilogy is ELP’s masterpiece.

I still remember the first time I heard this lp 1971 I was 12 OR 13 my friend had an older brother who had a stereo I went to his house and had to wait for him to eat dinner so he had sit and listen to this lp with head phones it blew my mind. imagine being 13 in 1971 and hearing this lp I say it changed my life

When the keyboards have the melody, the rhythm section just jumps out at me - Palmer's drums and Lake's bass during the keyboard sections are impeccable. Their debut was not built around a concept. Another highlight on this one is The Barbarian which is an Emerson adaptation of a theme by Bartok.

I'm 70 now and I really miss these guys. Keith and Greg both passed away a few years back but Carl is still with us. In fact his son teaches drums at a school just nearby where I live here in the UK. I think someone else has pointed out that classical pieces of music crop up in ELP's records from time to time. It's worth checking out "Pictures at an Exhibition" where they re-work the whole suite by Mussorgsky.

ELP have made so many and so different songs. I don't even know what to wish for in the first place. "The Endless Enigma", "Karn Evil 9", "Take A Pebble". (In the case of the "multi-parts", the parts urgently belong together).

The first time I saw ELP it was in auditorium/gym of a women's college, in northern NJ, a very small venue, as it was their first tour. The sound was flowing thru our bodies especially the Moog. We all were pretty close to them on a low stage. They put on an excellent show, Keith stabbing his Hammond (L2 model I think) with knives to hold down keys while tipping & dropping the organ which gives a unique boing spring sound. I owned an M2 & your are never supposed to move the organ unless you bolt the grenerator down because it can come off the springs & here Keith is tipping the organ on an edge & dropping it. Check out the groups each came from Keith (The Nice), Greg (King Crimson) and Palmer (The Crazy World of Arthur Brown, Atomic RoosteR).

Keith Emerson came up with the music for this song, incorporating many elements of classical music. His bandmates didn't know it at the time, but much of it was based on a 1926 piece by the Czech composer Leos Janacek called "Sinfonietta." A few years after "Knife-Edge" was released, the publisher who owned the rights to "Sinfonietta" brought up the issue, and Janacek was given a songwriting credit. Johann Sebastian Bach is also credited, as the song uses quotations from his "French Suite in D Minor"

one of the first live concerts I attended at the Mississippi River Festival in 1972. Blew me away. Emerson capped the encore by stabbing his synthesizer with knives while playing Tarkus.

Yes, this song is a great representation of ELP. It's funny how fans usually recommend the Greg Lake acoustic singer songwriter hits first for reactions when ELP was primarily a keyboard-bass-drums based band. "Trilogy" is their greatest song ever. Have fun.

"Finally, they're getting to the heavier side of ELP". Thousands of eyes light up - it's just what we've been waiting for. A request: at some point you'll probably be doing a reaction to "Tarkus" (I see it in the suggestions below already). When you do, please skip the studio version, and react to the live version from the 'Show That Never Ends' album instead. Every section of the piece is better live, but the last section, "Aquatarkus", is an absolute tour-de-force for Keith Emerson. (Nick will probably want to run out and buy an Analog synthesizer, when he hears what Analog can do and Digital can not.) I'd like to believe I'm enjoying your journey as much as you are, but I know that can't be true. All I can say is, please keep going, there's still an amazing amount of rabbit-hole ahead. You're part of my life now, and I'm loving it !

Sometimes my age is a benefit. When this LP released in 1970 I was 15 years old. I knew Keith Emerson from his former band: The Nice. I grew up in a time where all this great stuff released and I enjoyed a lot of bands also live on stage. Your reactions of young people makes this stuff unforgettable!

If you listen to ELP doing “Take A Pebble” I very highly recommend you do the version on their triple live album “Welcome Back My Friends.” They do a two-parter version of “Take A Pebble… (into) Still, You Turn Me On.” It’s an awesome combo! Cheers! 🎶🎵

So many of their songs are much better imo when performed live. Like Queen, a lot of the studio stuff is a bit flat - Lucky Man, especially the synth at the end, is a good example of this. Played live and with the emotion in Greg's voice it's a very different experience!

So glad you've discovered ELP. They were truly pioneers of their day, the start of the Prog Rock "Supergroups". Emerson did so much to take classical music and rock out to it -- the best examples of that are Aaron Copeland's Hoedown (Trilogy), and Fanfare for the Common Man (Works v1), Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition (and on the same album Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker Suite as "Nutrocker") -- but they did so much with their own stuff too -- Karn Evil 9 (all 3 impressions) is astounding.

Keith Emerson was like the Jimi Hendrix of the Hammond organ. A wonderful organic and expressive sounding instrument. Pitchbending achieved by switching off and on the power and then shoved and rocked and overdriven to distortion and for maximum effect. Brilliant live!

Hope you do more heavier ELP. I remember listening to some of their records upon release in the 70s. Me and my friends were just amazed at Emerson's prowess on the keyboards--especially after we saw them live in 1974. Everyone assumed that he was classically trained at some high-end British conservatory. But he revealed in his first interview in Keyboard magazine that his training consisted of lessons from "little old ladies down the road"! The rest he did himself. Remarkable.

ELP are magnificent! If you have not heard yet, I would highly recommend "Fanfare for the common man" also if you have not heard "Wishbone Ash" you need to, I would recommend "Blowin Free" and "Sometime World" to start. Enjoy your channel!

There's a 1970 filmed live performance of ELP doing Take a Pebble. It's quite good, and that way you can see them in action rather than just hearing them.

few mins in- so far they seem to like it and I'm glad they appreciate the darkness of this song. These guys were definitely a cult group and one not always with the cheeriest of sound. Greg Lake brought the brooding King Crimson mood and of course Keith Emerson was a true pioneer, who partnered with Robert Moog on the synth. His sound is totally unique !! They were too good to last very long. Carl P. provided major driving force too! This is an outstanding debut album !!

The first song on this album is called "The Barbarian", and was written by Bartock. Keth Emerson was a classically trained organist (probably in the Anglican church)a midwestern. I've spent the last 20 years building and working on church pipe organs for a midwestern organ co. and I can tell you some of the organs used on this album are wonderful. "Knife Edge" uses both pipe organs and a Hammond B3 with Leslie speakers. "Take a Pebble" shows his skill as a pianist. This album, Led Zepplin 2, and the first Black Sabbath albums changed my understanding of music.

I saw them one year when Journey was the opener. Aynsley Dunbar had an amazing drum solo that I thought couldn't be topped until I witnessed Palmers solo. Best three man band ever and such showmanship.

Thanks for putting some shine on this ELP track - one of my favorites from them . A somewhat similar sound from a band you probably never heard of : check out Beautiful Scarlet from Rare Bird (1970 ) I highly recommend the live performance video . Well worth the time .

Wow. Nice throwback request- haven’t enjoyed Bill Nelson’s BeBopDeluXe in a minute.... Last time i listened to Mr. Nelson was start of quarantine when i went on an ambient immersion 🎧 exploration into his Echo Observatory works. Now I’ll have to revisit Bill’s earlier 🎸 work. Vastly underrated musician/composer imho.

That's been my request. 1st heard a "snippet" of it in 1978 - 80 for the Guitar Center commercials on SoCal AOR/FM stations (before they became massive and all over the country). I was like; "Who the hell is that playing in the background, the keyboards are violent and the drumming is like a machine gun!". I believe if I remember correctly, when I finally bought the Lp, I was FLOORED when hearing it in its entirety for the 1st time, and had no idea it was by ELP.

@@mvunit3 I assume SoCal means Southern California. That's amazing - and for the Guitar Center commercials. Surprising. Yes, what you say is descriptive - it is violent music. A real punch in the head. The debut was released in the UK in 1970. The Barbarian and Knife Edge are both very heavy; perhaps not in the sense of the guitar tones of, say, Deep Purple or Black Sabbath in 1970. But certainly in terms of the aggression, the power, the energy, and the huge chords. I don't think that ELP have ever had credit for that. Anyway, good to talk. Best wishes from England.

Keith Emerson wasn't, strictly speaking, classically trained in the way that Rick Wakeman was at the Royal College of Music although he did have formal piano lessons. Greg Lake had just graduated from the university of King Crimson and while he was in ELP Carl Palmer actually studied with James Blades who was a legendary classical and session percussionist. I met Blades when he came to do a talk at our school. Imagine how cool that was for a teenage ELP fan. Blades could play anything, and used to challenge drummers to keep up with him on polyrhythms. Fun fact...one of the first songs ELP played together was 21st century Schizoid Man, just as a warm up!

You guys are coming along! ELP?!!! Thank you. Orchestral-quality, formally trained musicians NOT playing tonal scales. LOVE IT. You're treading dangerous ground here...moving away from your heavy and metal stuff into...wait for it...PROGRESSIVE ROCK. When I was a kid, there was this one station that always played progressive rock, and I don't remember ever hearing anything less than five minutes long. We're not talking dance music here, where people just need noise with a beat (the noise coming out of 5,000,000W Marshall tube amps, with fuzz distortion on "clip"). We're talking jazz, pentatonic scales with added 9ths, 11ths, 13ths, 78ths!!! Aauuggghhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! My brain is in ecstasy over the newness of the sound. This stuff wasn't created by jamming in a garage; it was composed. I don't know what's happening to you guys. One of these days you'll surprise me with Kerry Livgren's "Song for America," though I don't know if your brains will be able to take it for a solid 10 minutes, not to mention the piano solo in 9/8 meter. (Not joking.) On that day my head will explode, so I'm going to have to make the best of it until then so I won't have regrets. OK, as an aside, Nick's gonna pulp me, but Lex is beautiful. Shoot, you're beautiful too, Nick!!! Well, gotta go, but my next cup has to be decaf! Later.

Extremely nice to see ELP appreciated for more than their ballads. Keith Emerson is unanimously regarded as the greatest Rock keyboardist ever. I strongly recommend listening to "Tank," from this same album. It will give you a great example of how talented drummer Carl Palmer and bassist Greg Lake are and it also breaks historic new ground as Keith unveils the full power of the Moog Synthesizer to the Rock world. Trust me, "Tank" is a must-hear. 🎹🎸🥁
