Hey Nick, after the introduction about your emotional response to Joni's singing, here's some lyrics from her song 'People's parties' '...one minute she's so happy, then she's crying on someone's knee, saying, "Laughing and crying, you know, it's the same release"

Joni and I grew up together, and went through most of the same cultural evolutionary processes together between 1967 and 1990 (at least!)... I saw her in concert thrice over the course of her career, and I actually met her at an art gallery opening featuring her work! Joni is the preeminent singer/songwriter in the folk, pop, rock, and jazz genres, and even painted the covers for virtually all of her albums! IMO, there's just no one better, and that includes that guy Bob. Thank you for highlighted her huge and diverse oeuvre!

Joni Joni Joni. Her talent is otherworldly. I hope she is healthy again after enduring some challenges. Haven’t heard anything in the press recently so I hope all is well. She and her incredible music has been such a gift to the universe. She embodies the term “artist”.

I heard Joni’s first album when it was released. I was 13 and now I’m 66. I became a life-long fan. One early song I’ve always loved, which doesn’t get a lot of notice, is Cold Blue Steel and Sweet Fire. Early use of bass to great effect (before Jaco Pastorius) and haunting harmonies.

Usually here for Rush but as an old bass player I was turned on to Joni through Jaco Pastorius as a kid and immediately fell in love with her music and poetry. This album "Turbulant Indigo" was released in the early 90s and is one of her very best imo. The bass you heard was supplied by her then husband of 12 years producer/bassist Larry Klein who is prominent on that album. Interestingly,They were divorced shortly after its release. The Marry Magdalen asylums or "laundrys" were Roman Catholic sweat shops based mostly in England amd Ireland but worldwide as well during the 18th through the 20th centuries. They were basically slave labor for prostitutes and young homeless women...many thousands died under brutal conditions. Its a little known, interesting, and very sad story. There were mass graves of women found in europe. Thanks for the reaction guys. You two do a great job. A couple of suggestions for Joni (on the "with Jaco albums") would love to hear their duet from the album Don Juans Reckless Daughter called "Talk To Me" - From Mingus , big band era inspired, "The Dry Cleaner From Desmoines" or , a personal favorite of mine, "Refuge Of The Roads" from Hejera. I think you might really like that one in particular. Thanks guys. Keep up the good work!

Thank you for this comment. This particular lyric tells a rather sad story in history. I’m not convinced the guys were fully engaged with the words and the story they tell but it is easy with Joni to initially get wrapped up in the musical arrangement and musicianship. I love Joni Mitchell.

Hey you beautiful people, I love you both -- I love how you love sharing all this great music with each other; with us, sure, but I am so charmed with how you keep checking on each other. Nick, I love your sensitivity; Lex, I love your smile. Now, this is a fantastic song, but I first heard it on another album with a different arrangement, Tears of Stone, by The Chieftains, an Irish band that has been recording since 1962. I will let the leader and chief arranger of the band explain the project: “Over the years it has been The Chieftains great fortune to share the wonderful gift of our musical heritage with many of the world’s finest musicians. But of all these sessions perhaps none stands out more sweetly or more poignant than those of 'Tears of Stone'. For more than three years, balanced between the continents, the cultures and the impossible schedules of intersecting careers, we laboured in love. Our goal was to marry the many-faceted voices of contemporary women artists from around the world with the simple beauty of traditional Irish music. Our dream was that through the interpretive power of these many voices a new voice might be created to accompany that tradition into the future. Here, etched in the laughter, the love and the loss, are the stories they have told.” - Paddy Moloney I think you'd love the whole album. There are so many great singers on it: Bonnie Raitt, Natalie Merchant, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Loreena McKennitt, Sissel, Diana Krall, and more. Also, if you love jazz music, you're going to love Herbie Hancock's 2007 album, "River: The Joni Letters". Mostly, it is comprised of Joni covers, with some Joni-inspired as well. There are a few guest artists as well; Nora Jones, Leonard Cohen, Tina Turner, Joni herself, and others. One last thing, if you'd like help with the Renaissance rabbit hole, I can help you with that. I saw them in concert at a tiny club in San Diego back in prehistoric times: what a fantastic night that was! Next up for them, I'm thinking, should be the studio recording of Ashes Are Burning. Yes, the live version is great, but, hear its first version first... Thanks for making this sensitive old dude get misty-eyed from time to time...

Based on a TRUE story.. her descriptions showing the bleakness and torture those women endured, isn't a FRACTION of the horrors those women endured. They JUST closed the last of those laundries in 1970, and it was in the 1990's that after some of that land was sold, over 130 bodies were found "dumped in a hole in the dirt", there's a documentary or two that features some of the survivors.. BEAUTY of Joni's song to remind us of the need for human kindness and decency..

I've been enjoying your reaction videos. Much better-than-average banter between you, I feel like I've been your friend forever, that's how disarmingly charming the two of you are in your discourse. I like your range choices, from Joni to Rush and everything inbetween. I'm a Yes-Genesis era listener and I've learned a lot hearing your other tracks. I had no idea Rush payed homage to Powerhouse in their song La Villa Strangiato because when I heard it 30 years ago, I didn't have a very large mental data base of music. But now as an old guy, I immediately thought "Powerhouse!" The riff was also used in the soundtrack to "Honey I Shrunk the Kids" But I digress, your first reaction I saw was The Carpet Crawlers which is rarely done, so I had to check you out. So glad that I did. Now if I were the type of person who was likely to request a reaction [but I'm not] I'd ask for deep cuts like Genesis' "The Lamia" from The lamb lies down on Broadway. Or "Wonderous Stories" by Yes. Or "Skating Away" by Jethro Tull. Or "Dancing Barefoot" by Patti Smith. Or "Jig of Life" by Kate Bush. Or "To the Runner" by Jon Anderson. Or "Liquid Diamonds" Tori Amos but as I said, I'm not the kind of person that requests. ;)

Thank you so much for your kind words and support! Joni! Wow! I first heard when I was sixteen (43 years ago). A friend of my elder brother was into her art (music, poetry, painting). I was totally capture by her that night and she is in my heart since then. I love her so much! My only regrets...I was never able to see her live! The Montreal Jazz festival tried to have her but never succeeded. A good way to explore Joni's work is to go from her early work in the 60's & 70's chronologically because she evolves on every album. Lex, I know you like Blue...try the next one For The Roses. It's hard to pick up one song because those albums are so good!

Thank you for really delving into Joni. She saved my life. From Song to a Seagull to Both Sides Now (Clouds Album) to Blue, Court and Spark, Hejira, Hissing of Summer Lawns, Don Juan's wreckless daughter etc etc etc...always perfection from beginning to end. I guess I was 14 or 15 when I heard her for the first time and am now 67..You do the math..LOL...But what I wanted to say is that she does have a sense of humor and you can hear it in the Mingus album on the track Dry Cleaner from Demoines....Give it a listen you will chuckle.

Watch the movie from 2013 "Philomena" starring July Dench, it's about the Magdalene Sisters Laundries, where Catholics would place young girls who got pregnant out of wedlock, or maybe their families thought the girl was too forward, or whatever, the girls were imprisoned in these hell holes, made to work every day, like a sweat shop, treated horribly, then their babies were sold without the girls knowledge. Some babies died and were buried on the grounds, etc. Terrible atrocities at these places. The final one was shut down in the 1990's. This is what Joni is singing about.

The Magdalene Laundries in Ireland, also known as Magdalene asylums, were institutions usually run by Roman Catholic orders, which operated from the 18th to the late 20th centuries. They were run ostensibly to house "fallen women", an estimated 30,000 of whom were confined in these institutions in Ireland.

My top 3 songs from them: Serenade, Wild Mountain Honey, Swingtown Despite a few of their hits, they're pretty underrated in my opinion and there isn't a song from them that I don't like. OK. Love Joni. This song is so poignant, sad and based on horrendous & true practices. The Magdalene Asylums (or laundries) in Ireland, had 10,000 young girls enslaved under the pretense of helping “fallen women” from the 1920’s to 1990’s. Easy for a girl to get committed and hard to get out. They worked them in dire conditions in the laundries they operated and a mass grave was discovered for the many dead girls they basically worked to death. . Unfortunately, the Catholic Church and other religions have sordid pasts & practices. There are documentaries about the subject. Joni was, herself, a young, unwed mother just before she got successful and gave the baby girl up for adoption. Long story, but that’s probably her personal connection with the cruel branding of young women.
