What I also love about Pat is he gives space and due respect to the other members to play their instruments and let them share in the spotlight as opposed to having the guitar always be the center stage and focal point of the musical pieces which he creates. And a shout out is necessary to that of Lyle Mays who passed away recently for he had fingers of ivory.

Wow! Great tune! I’ve been a huge Metheny fan since 1978. The first time I saw him live was in a small theater in Grosse Pointe, Michigan. He’s probably my favorite musician. I won’t ask you to play a certain song. I will say that you can hardly go wrong.

I think my favorite song ever by Pat Metheny is "The First Circle" from the album of the same name. I don't know if he's still with them or not but Pedro Aznar was a fiend on everything he played, and he played everything. Never seen anyone move so much on a stage in my life. Fantastic tune!

That's great. I didn't think anyone remembered Pat Metheny from the Fandango soundtrack. The wedding dance scene with Kevin Costner and Suzie Amis would not have worked without the spectacularly moving and brilliant "It's for You" as the backing track.

Hi Nick & Lex! I would be remiss if I didn't weigh in, haha! Ok, Pat is a GOD to me! I've been into his music since 1981, when I first got turned onto "As Falls Wichita, So Falls Wichita Falls". Then I first saw The Pat Metheny Group on the "Travels" tour and I was blown away! I've been a fan since then and my favorite albums (besides "Wichita") are "Offramp" (1982), "First Circle" ('84), "Still Life (Talking)" from 1987, "Letter From Home" ('89) and "Secret Story" ('92). There are no "bad" Pat Metheny albums although there are some challenging ones, or ones with particular tracks which are challenging. Pat is very influenced by the "Free Jazz", avant-garde improvisational style and compositions of Ornette Coleman. He's also influenced by Wes Montgomery, Joni Mitchell, and the music of Antonio Carlos Jobim (and Brazilian music in general). So, as you go through his discography, you will hear lots of different styles and approaches in the Jazz he plays. Please check out a song called "Minuano (six eight)", from the Still Life album. Beautiful song, gorgeous guitar soloing! Time for you guys to do the Pat Metheny deep dive! :)

Pat Metheny Group....first album has a song called " Jaco " which is of course a Tribute to Jaco Pastorius. Has one of the most remarkable Bass solos I've ever heard. I saw Pat Petheny in Concert 2 times. Near perfect performances of complicated and richly textured Music. Metheny has a gift in that he lets the other Musicians have their moment and shine. Lyle Mays' keyboards could bring you to tears or make the hair on your neck stand up with a chill. Metheny has collaborated with many Musicians. One that stands out for me has a Wonderful Polish Vocalist with the Voice of an Angel. One of the Songs " Are You Going With Me " has versions in English and Polish. RIP.....Lyle Mays

Thanks for a very enlightening recording of a fairly recent Metheny song! My husband and I liked some of his late ‘70s work, then it morphed into the “weather channel music” period. Experimental is a great way to describe the chaotic discordant intro...which eventually leads to incredible overlap of multiple instruments and different rhythms to make a wonderful whole! I like the second quarter of it the best, where it builds on a simple catchy rhythm. Love your choices (I’m a prog rock fan primarily, Rush Yes Genesis ELP etc)-your explorations off that “highway” into the little neighborhood genres of music are enlightening, so someone who lived through the first round of prog rock can discover new creations! Another artist to explore more of (and Jaco Pretorius was a major inspiration for Geddy Lee on bass so it all circles around)

This was a pretty obscure track to start on with Metheny's music. I encourage you to keep going through his catalogue. I've seen Pat in concert 8 times and each one was incredible in its own way. The first concert I was so stunned at times that I couldn't even stand to clap. Anyway, keep going.

I went to the Unity Band tour in 2012 and sat in the front row and watched them play this live. It was an amazing experience seeing them perform this giant wall of sound with the Orchestrion, to me it was like combining the mix of Steve Reich and PMG all in one. One of the best Pat Metheny shows I have ever been to

The duration of the cacophony at the beginning was well worth the wait of the song actually starting. Great song; I'll definitely check out more. Up until this reaction video that was also my "first reaction" to Pat Metheny, my only other time seeing/hearing him in action was in the Shadows & Light video (you can check it out on youtube) of him with Jaco Pastorious and others supporting Joni Mitchell.

So glad you dove into some Metheny. He has SO much music in his catalog. Where does one even begin with him. This was an interesting start with his later work. His opus with the Pat Metheny group is This Way Up in three movements. Probably too long for your channel. However, the song The First Circle is stunningly beautiful and rhythmically interesting. I highly recommend it. You'll love it.

I can’t help myself. This song is a sample of how broad his song writing variety can go. I believe that there are better tunes to listen to, if you’re just getting started in his vast library. Try Tell it All or End of the Game off The First Circle album. San Lorenzo is his first popular song, for what it’s worth.

As somebody who listened to Pat Metheny and a lot of ECM jazz mostly in the 80s i would say this sounds more like Jan Gabarek than Pat Metheny. The sound i really loved him for was like this : Pat Metheny Group - Phase Dance - 1989 ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-zwBLC0WKuS0.html Watercolors (Live 1976) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-BVYux1GkBzs.html

Man I've loved Pat Metheny's music for a long time now and this one was new to me and it was typical Metheny greatness. I've listened to his Still Life(Talking) album the most by far and it's incredible. But there is so, so much more! I'm gonna dive back in! I noticed others recommending San Lorenzo and I completely agree. It's 10 minutes but feels like 2. Not sure what it is about that song but it evokes a ton of emotion. It brings me to tears. a content creator told me yesterday that if you upload a lot to youtube the algorithm will exclude you as subversive by nature from uploading so much, not that your content is, just that uploading so much in one day. He said about 2 a day. I think you two are great, Nick is a doting husband and Lex is dutiful wife in my view, it's great to see married interaction it is teaching non couples how couples react to each other. Like breaking a promise to a 5 year old who will forget the promise forever 30 seconds later and move on to the next I want this.....this is a really good song and arrangement, very progressive and changing almost every 16th beat it seems.

Excellent! Had not heard this piece before. After the kinda pretentious opening, it was more than worth the wait. Reminds me a bit of his classic Offramp from 1982 - highly recommended, like several ppl, for Are You Going With Me, a Metheny classic. Brava/Bravo!

Some of the catchiest music he has recorded is on the first Pat Metheny Group album in 1978, the first one with Lyle Mays, and after the album he did with Jaco Pastorius. One great use of his guitar synth trumpet tone is on his collaboration with Jack DeJohnette, Dave Holland, and Herbie Hancock at the Mellon Jazz Festival in 1990 - since the other musicians had all played with Miles Davis, and Pat was using his synth trumpet sound. This is not on Spotify, and it would be better to watch the live video on Y.Tube anyway. Another video with him on Y.Tube is the live performance of Joni Mitchell's "Amelia" which segues into an emotive Pat Metheny guitar solo. Jaco Pastorius and Lyle Mays were also on that tour, so it was sort of a reunion.

This is the Unity Band, one of the more recent of his group incarnations. At one time or another, Pat has explored just about every imaginable form of music, but his genius is that no matter what it is, it always sounds like Pat Metheny. Dive in anywhere, but be ready for anything. There's nothing better than this stuff. And don't forget his creative partner of multiple decades, Lyle Mays. He did some fantastic solo work, and the partnership created some of the best music in Metheny's catalog.

I always found that "chaos" sections or movements in music a bit self-indulgent... The music afterwards is very much Pat's trademark composition. A musical journey with every cut on the disc. He spends a lot of time in the USA, so we miss him north of the border.

I love the music of Pat Metheny, and find this piece interesting, and enjoyable. The dissonant intro however, left me rolling my eyes. Drummer Bill Bruford referred to jazz that sounds like the intro as, "squeaky bump jazz," while sax player Branford Marsalis saw this music in more terse terminology, calling it "pretentious self-indulgence."

Pat Metheny.... oh, my. I am home. No one features more of the artists I love than you two! I think my one Pat Metheny vinyl (locked away literally in the basement) is As Falls Witchita, So Falls Witchita Falls. This cut is a bit on the .... what, avant-garde side? Very experimental. Not what I would expect but I think every really good artist does something like this. Van Morrison’s Astral Weeks comes to mind but is much more listenable. OK... it got a bit better and musical after that cacophonous opening.

Like others have mentioned, this is not the best introduction to Pat Metheny's work. I'm going to suggest going back to the "Travels" album from 1983. It's a live album, and the tracks are from several performances. I think the place to start is the opening track, "Are You Going with Me?" an outstanding performance of an outstanding song. "Phase Dance" and "San Lorenzo" are also great, but I really like "Song for Bilbao" .

A few years ago we went to see the Pat Metheny Unity Band at the Salford Lowry Theatre, particularly looking forward to hearing Pat Metheny, however there was a music ‘giant’ in the band I was unfamiliar with, i.e. Chris Potter. He played at least two types of saxophone, including my favourite the soprano, flute, piano and acoustic guitar. Quite honestly it was like the Chris Potter Unity Band - Pat ‘who’. He really is a monster musician.
@buddystewart2020

Not my fav composition by him. The abstract beginning movement reminds me of some things I've played over the years in concert band. Once they get more into the groove I enjoy it more, and of course everybody is playing great, which one would expect. Pat's synth guitar solo is good, as usual.
@andyo3689

Ok just so everyone knows....Orchestrion Sketch is the Unity band and Pat's invention The Orchestrion. So when you mention Pat not coming in for several minutes is actually incorrect. Bass, Sax and Drums as well as Pat's guitar are the Unity Band but EVERYTHING else you hear is an invention that turns Pat's guitar into a controller for the Orchestral equivalent of a player piano. Pat is playing from the beginning on the Orchestrion. The only real horn is Chris Potter's saxophone. There are no side musicians it's a very impressive gadget. Not a great first Metheny tune.
