Great job, as usual! I love your thoughtful reactions! A telling feature of the quality of your analysis that you provide is that the stage name used by the singer for this band is "Chibi", which is a character from an anime movie called "Sailor Moon". This proves you "get" music. :) This is a great band from Toronto, Canada. They've put out several very successful albums since this (parts of which I'll be sure to send you in the future). The singer accurately characterized their sound (and also the reason for their contradictory sounding name) as "cute mixed with evil". Their most recent was just last year, called "Diamonds". Nothing to do with Benthic Realm in any way, though, haha! :)

Yes! “Cute mixed with evil!” Perfect. That’s what I meant by “balanced.” Nice request, Mike. And thanks for the info. ✨🤪

Yet another band that is new for me and I love the band name. I just watched the video of the song. They had it classified as Goth Metal online.

Glad you enjoyed it, Raider Fan! You rock! Yes, this is sort of goth metal or dark wave.

Really, this is termed goth nowadays?? Not that I disliked it, but apparently I grew up with a different goth sound from the 1980s.
@mikeg.4211
@mikeg.4211 3 года назад
@@murdockreviews “dark wave” is probably a more accurate general description, but the band’s sound can vary quite a bit to be more old school goth from time to time.

@@mikeg.4211 - Hi guys; "Darkwave" has been the _obscure_ name for this type of music that has "Gothic tones". Murdoc, I went to school and worked with guys that were into the _Goth scene_ and music as well, many years ago. I think the only bands that stuck with me were; This Mortal Coil, Black Tape for a Blue Girl, Bauhaus/Peter Murphy (especially Peter, his solo albums are awesome). *A dose of the melancholic . . .* The _Gothic Metal_ band "Theatre of Tragedy" started this type of music with singer "Liv Kristine" (along with the male vocalist Raymond István Rohonyi), who would later join her then husband from the German Death Metal _Atrocity_ (Alexander Krull) for the Darkwave/Symphonic Metal band "Leaves Eyes". Bands like; Paradise Lost, Type O Negative, Tiamat, Katatonia, The Gathering, Anathema, Xandria, Tristania, Theatres des Vampires, Moonspell, Samael were also some of the pioneers of Gothic Metal/Darkwave Metal (either having Doom, Symphonic, Prog Metal, Black Metal in their sound, or all the above, and depending what "era" of the band). These bands would influence a whole slew and subgenres of bands like (and female fronted); Nightwish, Epica, After Forever, Within Temptation, Therion, Delain, Edenbridge, and so on. Even Opeth had its _gothic_ tones in their Death Metal/Prog Metal era, which also sparked many other bands creating this "sound" (Novembers Doom, My Dying Bride, Crematory, Autumn Leaves were also at the top, and later; In Mourning, Be'lakor, Insomnium, Omnium Gatherum, Wintersun etc.). Remember: Gothic vs "Goth" are 2 different things, but some of the earlier bands embraced the Goth scene of music. Here is a great explanation: sheffieldgothic.home.blog/2020/09/03/what-makes-music-sound-gothic/ \m/

Love the music, love the voice 😲, which surprised me when Lex said it was the same singer as the one in Benthic Realm, which I didn't really like, but I read up and it's not the same signer... Mike G, keep up presenting hidden gems and everyone will find something they like 😊

Thanks, Franck, glad you enjoyed it! I try to provide some good quality interesting variety that isn't like everything else! :) (By the way, coming up in the future you may find that the singer for Benthic Realm actually has a huge range and can go from very low to high, in addition to being a great lead guitar player, so she may grow on you.)

@mikeg.4211 3 года назад
@@franckthibault2521 , OK, Franck, very cool of you to ask; after thinking it over, I have two suggestions. One is a BR song that has a chorus in a more major key with a higher tone, and the other is a song from the singer's/lead guitarist's (Krista Van Guilder) previous band, called Second Grave, which features good example of her extraordinary range from low to high. Here is the BR song: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-d1DwB4a64Zk.html and here is the Second Grave song: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-AkR1eKjWuak.html

So i just discovered your channel because i'm a huge fan of The Birthday Massacre but i don't understand why you didn't watch the music video on youtube for this song . Plus this band doesn't have a lot of music video to begin with so i'm kinda disappointed about it but anyway great reaction overall

Hi Hermione - having just discovered Nick & Lex, you won't have seen their explanation regarding videos. They have made the decision to keep videos to a minimum (I think they've only done one or two) in order to focus on the music purely as music. Obviously there are some great videos out there - but since they focus on first reactions (for at least one of them), they want their reactions to be focused on the music. For myself, I find that to give me options depending on what I'm looking for in the moment: sometimes I'm just into the music, but other times I want the video - Nick & Lex give me the option of reactions that focus on the music, while others give me the video option. Of course, we're all different and find our own preferences - watch a few more & see if the "music only" format works for you :-)

I hope you are gonna revisit this lovely little band at some point. Yeah I love this song though it's definitely more of a gateway song to band and the genre as a whole more than anything I feel like. If you are looking for something a little "obscure" then their song "blue" will be right up your alley! They have a pretty wide range in their music from synth pop/rock to more alternative metal and everything in between while staying very true to their overall sound. They are masters at blending seemingly opposing styles and making it work seemlessly while also creating a very immersive atmosphere on top of it and I think that song is a perfect example of that.

Was going to say your intro reminded me of the birthday massacre. ive always thought of them as nu wave mixed with 80s sync and goth. Definitely one of my favorite bands.
