You don’t disappoint. You may have wished for a simple comfortable shakedown cruise, but that’s not the La Vagabonde way. One word mates, epic. When it hits the fan you guys prove your strength. Your kids are also so resilient and irresistibly cute. I hope Lenny and Darwin are well. I’ve never seen a shake down go without problems, but you guys took it to the next level. Never do anything half assedI always say. 😂 It will only get better. You’re all legends! Cheers from South Florida🌴🌴🌴 P.S. your new Trimaran colors and interior are “sick”!👍

This channel is hard to watch now. They are so out of touch. It’s constant whining about not having a nanny or how they need a vacation. Try normal life like most people for a while. Also who puts their kids on an untested boat knowing bad weather is predicted. Everyone said this boat makes no sense with little kids. Riley has become more and more arrogant over time. It’s a shame as in the beginning it was fun to watch.

These observations from non-sailor. Helm leaves operator so completely exposed and standing at all times. All the noise from water slapping and banging. As a teenager I lived aboard with my parents and we sailed from Maine to Florida and the Bahamas. The first day we set sail heading south and off the coast of MA we had a fire in the forepeak. My dad had me take the helm at age 14 while he went below (a small TV had caught fire that was attached to a battery). I was terrified as we were going into the wind (63 ft mast) and I was dodging lobster pots and at sunset. What a start! But we made it and the five years I lived aboard were the absolute best of my life! Good on ya!

@92OliverH
@92OliverH 6 месяцев назад
Agreed, not be an armchair sailor but in any situation like that always have your lifejacket on before going on deck, ideally clipped into jackstays running the length of the deck. 18:50 is a great example of how to get lost at sea. Glad everyone safe and can see how wearing a lifejacket is not only for you but for your other crew members who will then risk their life to try recover you.
@HondoTrailside
@HondoTrailside 6 месяцев назад
Just tie in. You fall off a boat that has that speed potential, or any boat, in heavy weather, even if noticed immediately, your chance of recovery is very low. There must be some electronic solution to help, but just based on human potential, you can't easily find your way back to where they went into the water, and you can't see them for the wave tops. We aren't poolside at a hotel.

@@gregmatthies8128 Watch Mission Impossible 3. Riley and Alayna are trying to copy the persona of Tom Cruise and the sexy girl in that movie... they copied the burnt orange color of the "sexy" Lamborghini in MI3 (unfortunately they missed the mark). I think Riley believes himself able to do movie type stunts and they've bought into their relative "fame". but ... They are parents and it is the ocean and they need better judgement. My husband just watched MI3 and so it jumped out what Riley is trying to do with coping the color of the Lamborghini.

But unless you have been a captain your opinion or comment is unfounded.. RILEY what doesnt kill you makes you stronger..You put your crew and boat at risk.. Your comment is spot on 100% correct and as you saw no life vests on the children at any time and they only wore safety lines after the second day. Woah! Way to go haters. You must be new to the channel. Welcome. Reiley is one of the most experienced captains out there, crossing the Atlantic and Pacific oceans more times than I can recall. He is so risk averse and capable as a decision maker in high stress situations it's not funny. You armchair sailors are so funny with your expert opinions, it makes me laugh. Reiley would never put his family at risk. Elayna is the same. She has also been sailing (with Reiley) for over a decade, sailing some of the most deadly oceans on the planet. Sure, when the crew were fighting with the ripped sail, my heart rate significantly increased. But Reiley and the Rapido crew are experts. It's not dangerous. It's calculated. Expertly, based on years of experience. And not just experience sailing in a safe bay or lake. Years of experience that would test the most experienced ocean going captain. The kids are safe. They are in (two) very capable hands. Stop worrying.

I have no idea what the stressors were as far the time line you had to leave Vietnam…I’d think this was really cool were it the two if you living your lives, but those children had no choice. To set off from harbor already feeling bad only to hit rough waters like that? I think I’d be moving heaven and earth to avoid that for my kids. I’ve been looking forward to your new boat, but this just came across as reckless parenting.
@robindorrell9347

While you're docked having repairs made you could add railings around the deck, and add larger netting so the kids can be safer with more space to play. Add some overhead protection for the person at the helm. The boat needs a few adjustments for safe, fun, and comfortable family living. These are simple things. If this was your house, it would be no big deal to do these things, so I don't think adding these to a boat is a big deal either.

I was impressed at how you two, Elayna and Riley, were so composed at the worst times of the trip. A lot of things going wrong, complicated by poor weather. Not having engines was dangererous as you pointed out. Anyhow, everybody seemed to learn a lot on this trip, albeit the hard way at times. Shaking a boat out can be tough work. Once you become intimately familiar with her, life will be better and you will look back on the rough patches fondly and with confidence and pride. What an episode, so important to share things that go wrong so everybody can learn. All in all, a gorgeous sail boat! Congratulations on finally getting a chance to work her......... she's BEAUTIFUL!

This. I guess that's why they call it a shakedown. 😂 You're getting a lot of flack in the comments but cruisers know that waking up to a squall, a) it's disorienting b) it's safer to stop the drum smashing into the boat ASAP. God love you tho, you were lucky. The exit rules of Thailand are downright dangerous to sailors. Doing 16 knots is FAST I guess also a reminder of how fast. Also, guys, please rig some jack lines somewhere. Did anyone check the fuel?

They were composed on the film they posted. I doubt they were composed during most of the sail because many moments were truly life or death moments on this passage and safety precautions were not taken. Regardless of what Vietnam's policies are, you don't take a family out on a boat in those conditions and that was their first mistake.

There is nothing like an imparitive situation that teaches you all of the things that you didn't have time for before you assumed total responsibility for you and your family/crew. My bigest question is why you woud choose to tie your fate and that of your young family to an untried and unfamiliar boat that is solely committed to speed over wqter. You are not a Vendee Globe participant! you have a young vulnarable family that is more suited to a sea kingly motion with a proven sea worthyness that is easy to heave-to when there is no other viable solution. Amel, Oyster, and a number of other Ssil boats and Catamarans would also fill the bill and the cost of your untried trimaran. I certainly hope all of this effort works out to safe and issue free sailing.

Watching this and everything you went through, one thing became very apparent. When you’re forward, either doing normal work on the foredecks or wrestling with a busted sail, you really are open to all kinds of danger. There is nothing to stop you being thrown off the boat. I have been a devoted follower for years, always enjoying a feel-good sentiment from your content. However, this particular episode has left me with a contrasting feeling. Leaving port without the necessary safety precautions, especially when the risks were known in advance, seems like a questionable decision. I sincerely hope that lessons are learned from this incident and that future endeavors prioritize the safety and well-being of everyone involved. While I understand that unforeseen circumstances can arise, this time it seems there was prior knowledge of potential risks. You managed this time and well done everybody ! Either nothing scares one enough to get into a safety first mode. Or one is so scared that one panicks and thows caution into the wind. Paul?, i think grabed a sheet and flew through the air.. is typical behaviour. What motivated that action? The pleasant behaviour of the boat? The calm seas? The lull in stormy conditions? The danger to life and limb for others? FWIW the windows should be able to withtstand impact or have covers.. can't exchange a life for a cracked window.. so hell it may have been but not really... it may look more and is told more dramatic than it was. Kids react to emotion without even being told anything, they were seamingly happily playing while the grown ups were having fun flying through the air. As for the storytelling, good sea story and drilling that all important message very wisely. Only you know how much salt was sprinkeld on...

Can I suggest that if there are possible conditions like that, you run jack lines and have everyone clipped in? Even with a PFD, if someone had gone over, there was no getting them back. I was in a Newport Bermuda race and we hit a squall like that at night in the Gulf Stream. I was on the bow changing the #2 down to the #3. We had just gotten the 2 down when a wave swept me (and the sail) right under the lifeline and over the port side of the boat. I was clipped in on the starboard jack line, so I just hung there on the port side of the boat. (I was also still holding the foot of the 2 with my left hand as it splayed out behind the boat). It took two people to haul me back on. If I hadn’t been clipped in, I (and the 2) would have been lost

As much as I love your guy’s channel and beautiful family, this new chapter makes me so sad to watch. Downsizing the boat was an awful decision. Choosing a boat over the family’s wellbeing is not okay. I guess Riley wanted a faster boat and puts that before his family. There are specific things a home needs to be comfortable to live in, which this boat doesn't provide. Please let the children have a pleasant home to live in, and please let this boat be for the future when the children no longer live with you two. Children need to grow up in a home where they have space to explore and be safe, this is not a boat that appropriates that. And for gods’ sake, give Elayna some bigger space to race the children. Sorry for my bad English!

Quite a shake down. Boats are a personal choice in every aspect and I personally wouldn't go for anything near this for a family. It's fun for sure and maybe it's exactly the excitement you wanted. Those racing reef hooks are a great example of what I mean, not great for cruising. The boat is looking really good, beautiful interior etc. and I am happy for the both of you, waiting so long to realize this. But in the back of my head there's the question why this instead of performance cat with more space for the children inside. I follow many channels and am a sailor for a few decades, living on a 50 ft now in Asia, I sailed Northern country, northsea etc. as well as Chinese sea. My desire is much more space, and comfortable speed. A large cat.. each their dream. Our monohull is obviously much slower, like half windspeed, but you show me results here that equal more or less the new HH, Outremer X etc. Hence I wonder, whats the benefit that you see in a trimaran? What do I miss here? Last but not least, best regards from my 4 yr old crew member to your boys. SV VAGEKENNIS INDONESIA

Basic - a tri is safer than a cat... if you want to sail fast. This boat has extreme stability and power - it can go fast without pushing the limits. At 60ft the space is enough for them also with guests . Then - they are YTers - so they need a boats that are interesting and exiting to watch . The other sailing YTers I have followed ends up in std cats - that are just comfortable but maybe just as fast as Vagabonds last boat the Outremer. This boat is controversial as a family cruiser - but its exiting to follow this.
