Janis wore her soul like a blanket trying to protect her from pain, hurt, anger, & even love! This woman was one of a kind, & sadly missed by everyone who loved & understood her music ❤ 💚 💙 She truly was a gift that was only with us for a short time, but what a glorious time it was!!! Thank you, for such a thoughtful & honest reaction ❤ 💚 💙

Janis' voice had a very unique polyphonic quality and that means at times she was actually hitting overtones of multiple notes at once....you can hear it in this song several times. Tibetan monks train for years to do this in their chanting but Janis was born with it! Other people may be able to sing her songs but....there will never be another Janis. Not even close!

A must hear is "Work Me Lord", Stockholm 1969. You'll get a lot of requests for Ball and Chain, which is fabulous in its own right, but everyone and their brother has reacted to it. Janis had no bad music, but some show you exactly who Janis was. Also, "Little Girl Blue" and "A Woman Left Lonely" show the more introspective Janis. Raise Your Hand (on the Tom Jones Show) show exactly how dynamic her presence was... Tom had a hard time matching her energy! She performed with Johnny Winter, BB King, Albert King and Jimi Hendrix on the Blues stage (at Woodstock no less.) Albert King called her the Queen of the Blues. Yeah. Janis was one of a kind.

Janis'audience would have been familiar with this song, which is an aria from the Black American opera Porgy and Bess. Many singers had recorded it before Janis did, but her take on it was different. It's a song about babies dying.

You have to react to live performances from Janis to get the full effect. She is unparalleled. "Maybe" live on variety shows. "To Love Somebody" live on the Dick Cavett Show. "Crybaby" live concert. "Work Me Lord" live in Stockholm Sweden. "Litte Girl Blue" live on the Tom Jones Show. Transcendent performances.

We can listen to the song anytime, anywhere so it's preferable that you pause before reacting so, 1) we can actually hear what you're saying and 2) so you don't miss any little nuances of the performance.

Janis is one of those rare singers who really dont have a bad song. She is also a singer that could sing the phone book and i would still love it. My mom loved Janis, she would tell me stories about handing out on Sunset Strip and seeing her. R.I.P. Mom & Janis

Janis Joplin - Codine, Mercedes Benz, Ball and Chain Monterey 1967, Move Over, Kozmic Blues, Down on me, All is loneliness. Billie Holiday - Summertime 1939, Speak low, Fine and Mellow, Strange Fruit, Black symphony 1935. Bessie Smith - Downhearted blues 1923. Bessie and Billie were probably most important inspirations for Janis.
