It used to happen quite often during the 80s and 90s. It was always a joy to see the two together having a great time.

Eric Clapton and his band were on before Dire Straits and stuck around to perform with them. Eric had previously stood in for then rhythm guitarist Jack Sonni at the Nelson Mandela 70th Birthday Tribute Concert which Dire Straits headlined a couple of years earlier. (Jack's wife had just given birth. Sadly he passed away earlier this year.) Mark Knopfler and Dire Straits keyboard player Alan Clarke joined Eric on his 25th anniversary tour. The backing singers are from Eric's band along with Ray Cooper on percussion and Phil Palmer the third guitarist. Phil would subsequently join Dire Straits as their rhythm guitarist for their final "On the Night" tour. During Eric's set one of his guitar strings snapped and he just turned to Phil and told him to "take it away" leaving Phil to improvise a solo while Eric hopped off stage to get his guitar re-strung. Phil being the consummate professional didn't miss a beat.

🤯 Wow that was an amazing Benefit. 🥰 My friends sing the song 'Free Nelson Mandela' (Special Beat Services was English Beat, Eye & Eye, The Specials backing Elvis Costello). Everybody came out from the side of the stage to sing backup. 🤩 Annie Lenox singing Backup 🤯 live on my friends song still blows my mind. ☺️ We're all still Touring together doing 80's Festivals! 😒 Amazing the longevity 1 song on MTV has 40, 50 yrs later. Look for the Cruel World Festival coming to a Town near you. 🥰🐰

Story: Mark was in a big box store with TVs and such. This was when MTV first came on, and people could watch the bands for the first time. He saw some warehouse workers watching from the sidelines talking about how being in a band wasn’t work ( that ain’t working’).

I remember when this first came out on MTV when they actually played music videos. This was a very funny video. Thanks for showing this video because I’ve never seen before especially with one my favorite guitarist Eric Clapton.

Este concierto benéfico tuvo el riesgo de ser suspendido por la lluvia,en esta parte estaba Clapton con su banda, después se unió Dire straits,un poco más tarde también se juntó Elton John con ellos, creo que la primera banda en actuar fueron Tears for fears y después Status Quo,o viceversa,al final,en la noche empezó a llover,al final del show,estaba Pink Floyd en el escenario,con sus luces, no pararon hasta terminar, recomiendo que busquéis Confortable numb de ese concierto y Run like hell,fueron los últimos minutos de doce horas fabulosas de música

Well that was obviously amazing. How could it not be with Eric Clapton up there? For this track though, I think you should also do the official vid too. You get the riff better on that one in my opinion. This was superb though.
