So you are considering the quality of your drinking water, Or maybe you are already using a big brand name filter like Brita. ARE YOU getting good value and more importantly are you actually filtering out the things you should be?
British Berkefeld has a very long history in water filtration and has been used in many places you maybe wouldn't expect. The Queen and Royals, the Army and armed forces, and even people like you and me!
Not all filters are equal and it makes sense that the more money you spend the better the device with perform, and this is true with this gravity fed system.
There are various levels of filtration available with pricing and sizes also available to fit most needs and budgets.
This system can easily be used to filter out nasties in your residential tap water, or maybe to give your employees a cleaner healthier alternative than bottled water.
If you are a real outdoor type you can even use it to filter water from natural sources like streams and rivers etc.
This really is a massive subject and there is a lot of advice and communities that will offer tips and solutions to most water needs, so even if you are a "prepper" and want to filter your collected rain water and make it safe for your family when things go crazy in the World, with a gravity fed system like this (or the bigger units) you can still be hydrated and look after your health and maybe even save money in the long run with these easy to use and clean ceramic and charcoal filters.
Definitely worth taking a quick dive down the rabbit hole and learning more about the stuff you are putting into your body.
To be clear I am not a Doctor or qualified to give scientific advice, but I do know what decent water tastes like, and maybe you can also?

Brilliant bit of kit with testing to back it up. No regrets on mine. Doulton appear more transparent than other brands and have been in the business a long time.

Really interesting, I've put one on my Amazon Wishlist. I gave up using the Brita type filters, as I began to notice what I can only describe as a "green slime" appearing in places, which was very difficult to clean and I wondered what possible "nasties," I might be consuming inadvertently. So I went back to tap water. Looking forward to your updates and experiments! 😉👍

Hi my name is Ugly Bob and Im a Brita Filter user..........and to be honest I am more than happy with my Brita XL jug. Used similar products when I was in Service but never had a domestic one. I think the cost of this isnt prohibitive and wouldnt look out of place in a kitchen. Thanks for sharing this Mike and and Kath :-)

I have exactly the same filter system. I purchased it a year ago and still haven't cleaned the 2 filters (look like dildo's) and the water when tested with my TDS meter is still as filtered as the day i got it. Beats Brita hands down for water quality and value for money over time.

Depends on how much you use them. I found after about 10 months of use (for me), the water became a lot harder. This may not mean the filters have degraded in performance for filtering impurities like bacteria, chlorine and lead - maybe they still filter these well. But the taste does get a lot worse for me after those 10 months - I see a lot more mineral deposits in my water.

Living in humberside i certainly see the benefit in filtered water, esp for kettles so lessen build up of calcium deposits! Plus cordial drinks taste much better. Two downsides for me is prefer chilled water to drink and no RGB! Thanks for an interesting review. Stay safe everyone👍

Yes the kettle appears to be a lot better, so far. We get what you mean by chilled water, we sometimes fill a bottle or 2 and put in the fridge before be, then refilling it to filter during the night.

Ooh, a quick price check, assuming changing filters every 6 months, initial unit cost £130 with 2 filters and 2x filters £40(ish) first year cost 23p a litre (ruff approximation) so year 2 costs 10p per litre assuming 2 litres per pay every day. I pay 17p for 2 litres spring water(aldi, morrisons) albeit I have to carry 4x bottles on my ebike and the all consuming plastic issue, if that is offset by our local council and recycled. It could save me the arduousness of carrying bottles into my old age😢

Ive just got one of these, to replace the electric distiller. Just noticed to replace the ultra SS candles with ultra fluoride ones is gonna cost around £69 ouch! But fluoride is my main reason for filtering so will deffo be changing. Really like this so far, haven’t tested the water yet. Thanks for great video 👍🏻

yeah the flouride filters are a bit steep, some groups have suggested some less well known companies that sell "compatible" filters but as we are drinking from this daily i would rather not risk it

Personally I wouldn't have done it with the outside hose as there will be loads of horrible rubbish in that hose itself :/ But then again it's a filter so the filter will clean it out I suppose and that is the whole point of it. Pond water haha, that would be interesting haha Yeah we get hard water over here to. £135 for a filter though :/ Not sure I would want to pay that much myself.

Yeah the price seems a lot but we were paying £8 for Brita filters that only lasted 1-2 months and the capacity wasn’t great and didn’t taste as good, hopefully it I will be a good long term investment and the tea and coffee we make tastes so much better now that is almost worth it on its own

I'm in Bristol too. Brislington, and don't like the taste of the tap water. I have noticed that the water gets more of a clorinated taste in pipes down near the Avon somehow. Something to bare in mind is that you could akways get a second one if this one is too small, it would mean you could clean one and still have access to water. Also you could move them when full so if you wanted to spend the day in the garden you could take one outside with you and leave the other inside

I have rusty tap water over here, because it is coming from sandy land. Sure there is still some chemicals the city put in, but the taste is really good. I was looking at some sort of filtrer to keep the rust out of the stainless kettle.. It mâles a thin coating of rust powder when dry. I will look this filter, thanks for the hint!

There is a very good plumber on youtube called Dereton from the UK who did say in one of his videos to run your kitchen taps for a while if they have had the sun on them for a few hours to prevent the risk of legionella. I'm not sure if that applies to these type of products but it might be be advisable to keep them out of direct sunlight just in case.

good point, although went i worked for the BBC the site owners said we should try and flush through any dormant pipework weekly if possible to try and prevent that, so not sure what the timescale would be, but very good point

I purchased one of these last year and have just got round to setting it up...well, my partner did 😊 (last night) .. it seems to take a very long time for the water to drain from the top section into the bottom section.. is this normal? 🤔 I'm still waiting for the initial flush out to complete

It does take a while the first time, because the filters are bedding in, it usually takes about 3 hours to filter from the top to the bottom.

I worked out that we go through about £450 a year on bottled water a year, been buying for almost 13 years..almost £6000. Today I get a water filter! How are you finding it after the month?

it is basically the same thing, the filters are the main thing to change the results, i have used the black berkey filters and the ceramic ones and the ceramic seems better but much slower filter rate

sounds like the filters aren't primed and there is an air lock, or maybe the seal between the top and bottom containers is too tight not letting the air pressure equalise

I watched all the way through and you mentioned that you'd make more videos on this but the only one I can find by using the YT search bar is a recent one from around 3 weeks ago but it was to do with cleaning it. I'm thinking about buying one but I have some questions. 1) I don't know about Bristol but does it remove a lot of the chlorine taste? Where I am the taste for me is really bad to the point that I originally stopped drinking water outside of hot drinks and some years later started buying bottled water to be a bit more healthy. 2) Do you know where I could buy a food grade spig? The ones you've linked seem a bit iffy (on Ebay, not your links are iffy) and a lot of them are coming up as spring loaded. I've heard a lot of bad reviews being primarily linked the the plastic spig.

i used a spig from the amazon link and it is fully metal and a quarter turn cup valve with no spring, seems to work well, and i can send you a link to that but i think it is the amazon one in the description anyway. the taste of chlorine is not present from what i can tell, and tastes different to the tap water, but doesn't have the stripped taste that you get with brita etc. the long term review is proving tough as the particle measurements are about the same post and pre filtered. the testing device i have can't detect what the particals are just that they are present, so the filters seem to allow minerals through and that is a good thing, we are about to swap the filters out for the berkey black filters to see if that tastes or works any better etc, so look out for that. any other questions feel free to ask and i'll give you as much info as i can

@@mikesunboxing Turned up today, five days earlier than said. Cleaned and set up and had to wait. I had someone use the same glasses, both dry, neither rinsed out otherwise would've ruined the experiment. I'll be honest I couldn't really tell a difference to begin with, I took a sip from both glasses three times. On the third sip I let the water actually sit in my mouth rather than only holding it there for a second. It was quite difficult, for me the thing that tipped me was this weird sensation on the edging of my tongue and an after taste left in my mouth. I eventually made my guess and guessed the tap water being the one I didn't like out of the two. I can't say too much about whether or not I like the filtered water. I've been buying Highland Spring for about a year now and it's the only one I actually liked that you could buy. For me, it's very hard to describe but the HS water tasted sort of, well nothing, just has a 'fresh' kind of taste. I think the filtered water might be similar but would need to do a blind comparison between the bottled and tap filtered to see if I can taste a difference between those too. In short, the judgement on whether I actually like the tap filtered will remain to be seen for now, but there was certainly a difference for my taste buds.

I think the clean taste we experience from bought and brita filtered water is almost an unnatural level of clean, which makes it seem really fresh and clean, but some of the taste in "clean" water is from the natural things in it like the minerals etc. Not used the black filters yet, life keeps on getting in the way 😉

I also purchased the berkerfield SS but it seems to have a problem. You said it could hold like 8 liters on top and bottom. But when the bottom is full of filters water the top parts start to overflow.. it seems it can't hold the the top part when the bottom is full, is that normal?

@@mikesunboxingit’s similar, phoenix water filters and I’m looking at the newton I think it’s called too. So as I’m looking at reviews I came across your video and thought wonder why you chose that over the other gravity water filters. If that makes sense, what does he know that I haven’t found 😅

Appears to, look at the test data on the website. Ultra Sterasyl removes 95% 1.5ppb to less than or equal to 0.07ppb

Will the flouride filters for the Berkey be usable in the Berkefeld system too?

@@mikesunboxing Thanks for your reply, mate. The most inexpensive option seems to be to buy the Berkefeld and use the Berkey filters.

@@mikesunboxing Well, mate, I'm not telling you this to annoy you or anything like that, you've been kind enough to help me and I'm returning the favour. Our mind-warped government has recently decided to infect our water supply with masses of flouride, they're so concerned about our teeth, apparently... This is why I'm now researching water filters and especially those that remove this deadly chemical. Last night I discovered that the 'Berkey' flouride filters only remove up to 50% of flouride, due to the filter system they use. It was recommended that the best filters for removing fluoride are the 'CeraMetix' filters made by 'Aquacera'. Will they fit the Berkey? I'm still trying to find that out.

I’ve just bought the same one and I’m doing the first filter but it’s been draining for 9 hours and only half way, that’s not right surely

sounds like the filters are not primed, or the lid is too tight and causing a vacuum

I primed it but it’s draining 2/3 quite fast but the last 1/3 is very slow

@@steveohim That's the way it works - it's a gravity filter. There will always be some left in the bottom of the unfiltered compartment. We changed our filters to the black Berkey ones and they seem faster than the Doulton ones

I'm having the same issue. The installation instructions say nothing about priming the filters i.e filling them with running tap water before screwing them into the top chamber.
