Our fostering journey -- One year anniversary
I can't believe it's only been one year since we started fostering kittens. As some of you know, we were supposed to foster once or twice just to help Phoebe overcome her fear of cats. My husband was more of a dog person, but I was a cat lady before I became a certified crazy dog lady.
The first set of kittens, GG and Cheddar were so easy, fun and cute, and they totally got us hooked! Then we discovered Phoebe's hidden talent as a kitten nanny. We decided to keep fostering a little longer. The second set, Gizmo and Stripe weren't as easy as GG & Cheddar, but nothing I couldn't handle yet. The transformation Stripe made was just so remarkable, it gave me confidence in what I was doing. The third set, Biscuit and Grayvy, had me on an emotional roller-coaster. They were my first neonatal kittens. I remember crying so much in fear of losing them. My Christmas wish was that they would make it, and they did! Jelly Bean was my first singleton. I had to be creative so he wouldn't be lonely. Then I added KitKat and Snickers for Jelly Bean. They were my first trio and I called them "Candy Kittens". After they left, we started a new rescue "Border Kitty Rescue" and our first set was Cream Soda and Truffles. They were my second neonatal kittens, and Cream Soda was my first loss. He was also my first foster adoption. I wanted him to have a family before we said good bye. Truffles went through a lot of struggles. I was terrified of losing her, especially after losing her brother. She fought hard, I fought hard for her, and today, she's one healthy gorgeous panther! I added the Bears, Smokey bear and Sunny bear, so Truffles would have friends. They hit it off right away. Somewhere down the line, I had lost my mind. I ended up adding three more kittens, totaling 6 kittens. Vanilla, Ice and Baby had all sorts of medical conditions, including ringworm. Our maximum capacity is (was) 2 kittens when we started. Somehow, I convinced my husband who is in finance that 6 = 2. By then, he was converted to a kitten lover. He won't admit it publicly, but he knows he is. The first few weeks of having 6 kittens with different needs were VERY difficult. Feeding them every two hours, medicating, sanitizing, and making sure each one has enough mental stimulation etc. I slept 4-5 hours on average, and I was constantly working. Everyone is stable now, and I am at the phase where I can just enjoy healthy and playful kittens.
Each kitten has taught me so much. They also unlocked Phoebe's gift that we didn't know she had. I'm so grateful for that. I will continue to learn how to care for kittens, stay humble, and keep on fostering as long as we are able. Thank you for all your love and support. They mean the world to me.
We finally have a wish list on Chewy! We could use the gift card more so we can purchase medications and preventives. 🧡🧡www.chewy.com/...
