Thanks Rita! The thermal pack from FWC certainly helps with keeping the heat in (we discuss this in our latest tour video, don’t recall if we mention it in this one). However, when it’s windy, it does make for an bad night sleep, because of the noise and rattling. Luckily, we’ve only experienced this on two occasions!

I like it. Super simple design layout you have there. Noval use of magnets for the kitchen door. I currently have a huge heavy slide-in camper in my 97 F350 and tossing around the idea of selling both and getting a slightly used Tundra Crewmax and build a flatbed on it for the flatbed model FWC to go on. Sub'd to see how this works out for you. 😎

Thanks for the feedback! The setup you mentioned is our ideal rig too. We toured an owner's flatbed Grandby at the NorCal FWC rally and it does allow for more room to move around the interior. Especially with the side door.

Great video! Really liked seeing what you did as I am thinking about doing some extremely similar. 1) Do you find that the weboost was a worthy investment? 2) Did you get the thermal pack installed by FWC after you bought the camper? 3) If you've got any videos from the build out you should post them! PS - I thought the sound was fine on the video.
@momentarylocals
@momentarylocals 5 лет назад
Hey Kyle, thanks for the comment and good luck on the build. To answer your questions: 1) I'm honestly on the fence with the WeBoost. I'm not convinced the booster is worth the cost. But I do have to commend them on their customer support. I received a defective power cable with the kit and they sent a replacement free and fast. Also, during this trip the antenna hardware failed at the spring. Again, they sent an entire replacement antenna kit with new fasteners. Last thing I'll say about it, the kind of camping we do it usually very "off grid." This means there is generally no cell signal to boost. And in these cases the WeBoost is useless. But that's not their fault. 2) The thermal pack attaches to the camper via hook & look strips that were installed during FWC's manufacturing process. It was as easy as lining up the window opening and attaching the hook & loop. Took all of 5 minutes to "install." It makes a big difference not only in temperature but sound as well. 3) Unfortunately, I did not take any video during the build, however, I will have a write-up on our blog with progress pictures. Be sure to subscribe at momentarylocals.com for updates.

Great job guys. Beautiful dog too by the way. Me and my wife had to put our baby to sleep about 6 months ago, our German Shepherd, girl. We are very lost without her and a part of me died when she died. She had bone cancer. Anyways, we are serious looking into getting exactly what you guys have is the shell top with the insulated panels like you guys got. I have a brand new Nissan/Frontier V/6, 4.0. I think 275 HP. Not sure but it will do fine and it's the Pro 4 X. Love it !!!!!! I like everything y'all have done with it so far. A web site "Sportsmans Guide". Has portable propane on demand water heaters that we will use for like $200 bucks or so. You should really get an outside shower and just get a pop open tent shower shell . Cheap. We are gonna get a tv, 2 batteries, and probably 2 or maybe 3 solar panels. We got a new generator/ inverter.

So cool. Awesome build. May I ask how you've got the cabinetry/countertop fastened in place? I'll be building out a similar shell soon, and I'd like to design essentially the same thing you've built, but I'd like to avoid drilling into the camper wall if possible. Would like to leave everything as modular as possible. Thanks very much!

Hi Greg, thanks for subscribing. We purchased the camper second hand and the roll-over couch was an option selected by the previous owner. It was installed at the factory during manufacturing. Hi ! Just found your video. Wise use of space and well thought out. I am guessing the Ranger is 4 x4 ? We have a 2007 Ranger Sport 2 wheel drive with the 3 L. Engine and 5 speed manual transmission. A 2008 Eagle FWC . We added a leaf in the rear to level everything. Fuel economy is reasonable and the range is good. Two summers ago we drove the Dempster Highway to Tuktoyuktuk NWT. Other trips have included the Yukon and small sections of Alaska. Most of our local trips have been on our FSR ( Forestry Service Roads) here in BC where we live. Rangers are really quite capable. We are looking to upgrade to a FWD for more capability and perhaps rearrange the roll over couch to a side dinette. Henry might approve this. I hope? We will follow you. Have fun and stay safe ! Keep the adventure alive. You might want to check out LIFESTYLE OVERLAND here on RU-vid . Lifestyleoverland.com. Is the website. Another young family following their hearts. I’m not sure if you still have the camper (since this post is 2 years old), but if you are still in the camper or not,I do have a few questions now that I am purchasing one like yours; 1. Any way you can measure the height of your shelving system?? That and your countertop fit perfectly underneath the sliding portion of the bed. Or really what is the height of your countertop from the bottom of the platform to the top of the countertop?? I am having issues finding shelving that fits s perfectly as yours with a countertop. Also, is your countertop 1/4 in or 1/2 inches thick?? Hopefully you still have the camper and are enjoying it. Thanks and have a great day!!!

Also, is that a Dometic fridge? He mentioned the mattress was super comfortable; could you tell me what type of mattress as well?
@momentarylocals
@momentarylocals 5 лет назад
Hi Daryl, thank you for the comment. We are using a Renogy 100 Watts 12 Volts Monocrystalline panel on the roof. The camper came pre-wired for solar so all I needed to do was attach the panel and plug it into the SAE socket on the roof. We used Sikaflex 252 to attach the panel without drilling any holes. The 12v fridge is a non-branded version from an Amazon seller. The price was right at 1/4 the cost of a Dometic. It gets cold but the thermostat accuracy is garbage. I need to set it to 22F to get it down to 35F. Our mattress is stock and came with the camper. While it is more comfortable than a sleeping pad, it's a little too firm for my taste. We plan on adding a 2-3" memory foam mattress topper.

Like the setup! How did you go about attaching your drawers, etc? I saw in one photo you had tie down points, but I'm assuming you did something different with the full setup? Also, how did you know where you drill for your gray water exit?
@momentarylocals
@momentarylocals 5 лет назад
Good call Gavin. I didn't cover that in the video. The drawers are kept in place with a vertical bungee cord using an existing D-ring tie down at the bottom and a reinforced hole in the counter for the top. It's low tech but it works! For the gray water drain, I decided to drill a hole on the bottom/floor/lip of the camper rather than the wall. There is enough of an overhang to clear the bed of the truck. And I didn't have to worry about hitting a support beam in the wall. Where I drilled is all wood. If there is aluminum there, I got lucky!

Hey guys, I really liked your video. I've been thinking of getting a base model four wheel pop up camper for my Ford F150 so that I can do my own mods and finish building like you did. After I saw that you have this on a Ranger pickup, then I think my F150 crew cab p.u. is doable. You beefed up the tires but did you have to do anything to the suspension? I currently have just a camper shell and we travel with a 12v portable fridge and Camco potty. And I want something more convenient without getting too exorbitant with size. Your setup is something where I can expand my interest with solar and use some of my existing equipment like the fridge, etc. I see you have a Deka Intimidator AGM battery. Funny, that is the same battery I have as my starter battery on my F150.
@momentarylocals
@momentarylocals 4 года назад
I'm sure a Hawk shell on an F150 is "doable." But one thing I've learned from other FWC owners is they wish they leveled up with their truck. The current iteration of our rig works but the more we do to it the weight increases which puts more stress on the truck. Right now we're just at the GVWR for the Ranger. I really have to consider weight with future modifications. We added Air Lift airbags to the rear prior to picking up the camper. That battery came with the camper btw. Good luck with you build! Sounds like you're already getting out there which is great.

The sides are pulled taut when popped up. I've noticed other pop-ups where there is excess material, possibly resulting in the issue you mentioned. It hasn't really been a problem for us. Before we had the thermal pack we camped along the north coast (California) on a windy night. There was some noise but not enough to keep us awake at night.

Does the ranger payload allows to carry that camper ?

Where'd you manage to get your hands on a bare pop-up bed camper that fits in a mid-size? I'm looking to do a cab-over build like this for my Nissan truck camper. Ideally, I'd like a pop-up but I can live without it.

Just lucky I guess. After extensive research I knew I wanted a Four Wheel Pop-up Camper and the only one they make, that fits my truck configuration, is their Fleet model. We planned on picking up a new Fleet shell from the factory in Woodland, CA but found this year old "used" one just outside Sacramento, not too far from where we live. It was in stellar condition and, most importantly, the price was right. Before the purchase I had the FWC factory install the mounts and electrical connection to the Ranger. Picked up the camper the same day and the rest is history. It looks like you have a Frontier? This same model (FWC Fleet) would fit your rig. There's a Facebook group you can join for used Four Wheel Campers for sale. FWC's aren't the cheapest but they're the best in my opinion.

Thanks for sharing your setup. I'm looking for a used Four Wheel Camper. Where did you buy the thermal pack?

Thanks for the comment Scott. The thermal pack was purchased directly from FWC. They just ask for the camper info (year, make, model) and then custom make it for your application. By the way, have you joined the Used Four Wheel Campers page on Facebook?

How long does it take to disconnect from the truck? Do you keep it on all the time?

Hey I have a quick question if this gets to you. As far as payload goes, are you over? or what is the PL of your truck? I have a chevy 1500 and im trying to figure out the PL. thinking of buying the same camper plus gear and passanger

The cold hard truth is most, if not all, truck camper rigs are over their GVWR. Contrary to popular belief you can not legally increase your vehicle's GVWR with modifications. Our Ranger's rating is 5120 lbs (2322 kg), payload just over 1200 lbs. One of the best things about Four Wheel Pop-Up Campers is they are light. From the factory ours is only 900 lbs. Of course with modifications, gear, and passengers it weighs more than that. I have weighed the rig fully loaded and fueled before a trip. I won't share the numbers but you can guess where we ended up. Look on the driver side door frame for your GVWR. It's on the same plate as the tire pressure guide. That will give you your specific rating.
