Well, I'm 14 so I'd think it was 2006 or 2008 or 2009 or something but I remember being at elementary and watching this every martin luther king day. But I'm in High School now, so I guess things have changed. East Arcadia School was my school, gave me so many memories
This just unlocked a memory from elementary school. We all gathered in the library, the librarian rolled in the cart with the TV and VCR, and we all sat on little pillows on the floor and watched this movie. Then, after it was over, we had a discussion.
I originally wasn't going to get shown this until my UA teacher showed it to me, although she couldn't finish it at all since we only have like 20 or 30 minutes in her class, maybe 40 or 50
Same! I’m watching this as an adult for the first time an I’ve been bawling my eyes out 😭 I remember watching this every year in elementary school and I grew up in Memphis, TN too so we got to take field trips to the civil rights museum here downtown
I went to pre school in Harlem and my entire kindergarten class watched this in the cafeteria during recess. I specifically remember the dog chase scene.
First time watching this as an adult and I am left emotional. I am more touched by this film than I ever was when I watched this as a child. #ForeverKing
Wow I remember watching this movie every year in Elementary I was very fascinated with MLK and his life as a kid. I remember reading every book in my school library about him. Also one of my teachers marched with him and she attended his funeral and showed us footage she had of his funeral on a VHS tape (it was impressive because we didn’t have RU-vid back then) and she bought the obituary she had to class to let us see it.
My sophomore high school principal actually met and shook Dr. King‘s hand when he was a young man every Martin Luther King Jr. day he would regale with the tale of how he met Dr. King and I could hear the pride in his voice that he got to meet such a great man
We’ve been watching it in my school since 2nd grade and we watched it again in 3rd grade then 4th grade and now I am in 5th grade I assume we will watch it the next Martin Luther long week
Happy MLK Day 2019! Once more I keep my tradition of watching this amazing and deep movie to celebrate the life of the man who taught us to not judge people by the color of their skin but by the content of their character. R.I.P Martin..
That moment when martin goes back to his own time and then suddenly that gunshot is heard gave me chills the first time i saw this movie, it made me feel so sad because miles just wanted to save him. And man, rewatching it again still gives me those chills. It's such a tragedy that martin luther king jr's life was taken away at a young age. He was a true human who all he ever wanted was for everyone to be seen as equals, to show that even if we are different on the outside by skin color, on the inside we are the same… we are human beings. Sadly racism is still strong till this day. It may be a horrible reality we are all living in, but that doesn’t mean we can’t do something about it. We can take action to protect those who suffer this cruel form of hatred.
I come back to watch this movie every year for MLK Jr. day because it has such a strong and beautiful message, thank you Martin for making the world a better place, Happy Martin Luther King Jr. day!
It did make me cry. It was my cery first instance of dramatic irony. While the viewers and miles knew martin would die, martin chose to return to fulfill his destiny. That in and of itself is already a sad plot- sscrificing yourself for the betterment of rleveryone else- but unleash it on a first grader for the first time and you get many real tears fast.
This had to come out before 1999, because I was in kindergarten in 96, and I 100% remember watching this in the auditorium along with other kindergarten classes.
It's that time of the year again. I've seen people criticize this movie for being unrealistic, but I still feel like this movie has a strong message told in a powerful way. Happy MLK day!
I genuinely love this movie for being my first introduction to Dr. King's work. I think I was 5 or 6 when I was shown this movie in kindergarten on Martin Luther King day. I'll be real, I'm white and I was clueless about racism. I had received such a powerful lesson of empathy for others from this movie. I was so moved that I genuinely thought Martin Luther King ended racism. If only it were been that simple. If only everyone had heard King's speeches and heard he was speaking God's truths. If only he were never assassinated. Martin Luther King Jr. is one of my heroes, not only as a cultural but a spiritual leader for his time. If I ever was to lead a movement, I would take some serious notes from Dr. King's book. He may have died too soon but his message of peace overcoming all conflict lives on in the generations of children who came after him that learn the importance of his work in the Civil Rights movement.
When I was in elementary school, I vividly remember that scene in the movie were MLK JR. walked through that door. I wasn't fully aware of the concept of death, but as the scene progressed I was holding back tears. I didn't know much about MLK JR. when I was a child, but that scene made me very upset for the entire day. I still cry at that scene. Did anyone else had a similar response to the death scene when you were little kids watching this?
Marcha Couyoute Yes. I didn't fully grasp the concept of death. I was in first grade when I first watched this movie. It is a very good movie. And the scene where Martin walked through the door leading up to his assassination at the Lorraine Motel saddened me, from the footage of the funeral march to the photos of Martin and his family to the final shot of his gravestone. So, for me, it is a great movie, but it's also an emotional one, too.
Unfortunately while he made things better . I'm very sad to say The people who had the most impact to fix things failed and pretended things were already better till the racism became so blatant they couldn't ignore it anymore and were "shocked".
Wowww my dumb elementary school did not deserve such a cinematic masterpiece 😭😭😭 the final scene when kid Martin walks into his home, knowing his fate but still willing to make that sacrifice for the betterment of the future, was toooo deep for me to appreciate 😭🔥🔥🔥
😢 He.... They tried to show him what he did, but because of time travel..... He had to stay in his time to save so many.... But evil took him... Wonder (in the movie sence)he probably knew what that boy was gonna say. Makes him more a hero, knew he would die, but fulfilled his destiny & made a better world than he left behind
Got showed this movie once in elementary school for MLK day, I still remember big chunks of the film despite it being almost 15 years ago. Glad someone put it up online.
14:44 as a kid i never really cared about what she meant by that statement but growing up and getting older i started to realize what she meant by "hanging"
I'm 28 and not ashamed to say I still LOVE and watch this movie. Those 60s was one screwed up decade. Dr. King had balls of Titanium steel to do what he did because I know I could never have the courage to stand up like he did.
60's? don't you mean the 1920's,30,s 40,s,50's and 60's. those were all screwed up decades, the 70's was when things started to finally change thanks to MLK and other civil right activists.
Man I remember when I watched this in school I think 2003. I was only 8 when I watched it and I remember being quite sad at the ending of it. The gunshot followed by the real life footage after never left my mind even now.
Elementary memorabilia right here. This pops up in my recommended every year for Martin bday. Legit love this movie so much man. I really wish we could come together man it’s truly heart breaking. RIP MLK.
just sat down with my son and watched this. I loved this movie when I was a little girl and I'm so glad that my son can enjoy it too ! Happy MLKD 2017 ❤
LeVar Burton Whoopi Goldberg James Earl Jones Samuel L Jackson Angela Basset Danny Glover Ed Asner Ashley Judd Richard Kind Susan Sarandon John Travolta Oprah Winfrey In a educational Martin Luther King cartoon that talks about civil rights and people should get along and what a great cast
Yup. Funny thing is that it had a lot of big name voices for a str8 to VHS movie. I didn't even know that John Travolta and Lucas Black played in this movie until later. LOL
I loved this movie, They need to show this in Highschool in American History or something cause this would probably be the only thing I wouldn't fall asleep on 💀
I remember watching this every year in elementary and having discussions after we watched it. I am now 26 and think about it every MLK day and finally actually Googled it to make sure it wasn't a fever dream because no one in my current town remembers it. Going to watch it again for old time's sake.
*Google truth contest* and read "The Present" to see howe we can achieve Martin Luther King's dream once and for all, and it all starts within our minds. We must be the change we want to see in the world. The 1st pg. is an eye opener.
Me! Or I was. It is a day later now. This is the first time I saw this. Quite an emotional movie honestly. I have had thoughts quite similar to this before, imagining a life that was still segregated. The toll something like this would have in my life would be absolutely devastating. Most of my friendships, relationships, current and previous significant others, teachers, and the important people in my life, might not be in my life. Hell the even the company I work might be non existent, if it did, I may not be working there. Nearly every meaningful and important event that has ever happened in my life would not have. That is some powerful stuff right there. There literally may not be any other historical figure that has has benefitted me or had this much of an impact on the life that I have. Perhaps this is why this movie hit me as hard as it did.
So, much, nostalgia. I feel like i'm in kindergarten in library sitting on the carpet next my buddies sitting indian style. Ahh good times, good times.
I watched this for the first time in 3rd grade. I thought (still think) it was a great and powerful movie with a strong and influential message. Although I'm sort of disgusted by all the racism here in the comment section.
Anyone still watch this in elementary because I watch all the way in kindergarten 2011-2017 5th grade but not anymore but still remover this and keep watching this because ik in. 8th grade

I used to watch this when I was a kid in elementary school. I thought I'd watch this movie this year for a special treat for MLK day, and a blast of nostalgia
I've never seen this. thank you for sharing this video my daughter's 8 years old and she loves history. and lately she's shown great interest in Martin Luther king along with Nelson Mandela. I will be showing this to her after school today thanks again
I'm a boy from Brazil and even though our cultures are very different, Dr. King's message of love is universal and this simple animation is a great demonstration of the importance of his attitudes.
What do you suppose ever happened to the two white boys Martin used to play with? That is a real incident from his childhood in which their mother said he couldn't play with them anymore. If they were still living as adults at the time of his activism in the civil rights movement, what do you suppose they must have thought of him then?
MLK jr., friend the white one stopped playing cause his dad didn’t like Martin so he said you can’t hang out with him he has colored skin so then the boy was sad but he was ignoring Martin and being rude and his excuse was oh my dad wants me to help him out in his grocery store so then after a while the white boy movef
While I'm not sure the history of the kids, I remembered seeing the movie in elementary school. This was the first time I realized racism isn't something you're born with. It isn't a character trait. It's bigotry that's taught to kids by their parents. These kids saw Martin as any other kid but due to their parents point of view, they must've grown up to resent and hate minorities just as their parents did because to them , it was "right"
