I like that he revealed all the details, from their actual expenses to ROI computations. And he concluded the most important lesson - sustainability and being eco friendly. I think it's important to know that if you're capable to do something better and totally out of norm, though it costs us something, it always is not for our own convenience but also for the environment. I love this content, very raw, practical and straightforward!

Do not be naive; Tremendous amount of mining minerals is needed for those batteries & some significant amount of minerals is needed in the production of those solar panels. Lithium, Graphite, aluminum, nickel. Even lead probably. There is a saying -" If you cannot plant it, you have to mine it". At the end of the lifecycle of those batteries and panels, they also have to be discarded properly.

@@edwinfcapidos your response is illogical.. that solar panel won't last 10 yrs .. at that span you need to replace expensive batteries! And that solar panel actually deteriorates after just 5yrs. Actually, I see this content as an aspiration for the government to do their part to make or use clean energy sources to protect our environment. Even though it is costly and has a slow ROI, the benefits to our environment are enormous. Imagine if every country used clean energy; our planet would be cleaner, and natural disasters would be reduced; more lives would be saved, and less money would be spent to repair structures damaged by the disaster.

I have a DIY solar setup at our home and I spent 60k plus (cheap because I am the only one who set it up and some parts are 2nd hand) and it can only run the essential lights at home, router and charging our phones and 2 laptops if ever we experience power outage. Trick is use the electric devices at night, like what we did after Typhoon Odette hit us. I am still going to install a solar setup to our deep well water pump but these rainy days make me feel lazy to fully set it up. It has been rainy for days in Cebu.

Would like to ask if your family has ever experienced a brown/black out with the solar set up and how the transition was? Specifically at night if the house is being supplemented by the grid, are there electrical surges? Does the electricity close down for a few mins then comes back up? Or is it just a flickering in lights? Or do you not notice it at all? Also, if you have ever experienced using your generator along with or after using up the solar set up, what was that process like transitioning from solar power to generator power? :)

How about if you source a running water stream near by, maybe you could also try using hydro power off grid type source of electricity, the mechanism to be used should be safe from wood and other debri. It's a windmill type device run by water flow to generate electricity. Or how about trying a small windmill device just powered by the wind blow, I know its also used in Europe and America as a good source of clean power not to affect the environment. The perfect setup for me is Hybrid - Grid Tied with just sufficient battery capacity to run the essentials during “lengthy” power failures plus a GenSet…. The focus of such a setup is to offset night time use of ACs with excess production fed back to the grid by day even with some ACS on. Unless a newer chemistry of LiION or LIPhos batteries are developed (that will last at least 10 years or 20K charge/discharge cycles - ROI will never ever be attractive for a full battery backed Solar Setup

Actually there are 2 types of electricity being produced, AC (alternating current) & DC (direct current) and they are 2 different things when supplied. In your question, batteries are supplied with DC & gensets produce AC so they have different type. Yes, it's possible but not efficient with additional converter (converting AC to DC) to the system. Since you'll be using it to power up appliances which is AC supplied, maybe it would be better if directly na lang siya sa appliances. Hope that I somehow helped 😁

Sir Slater, my question has to do with sizing and capacity. Since the batteries are the most expensive part of your setup, how did you determine how much battery to buy? Thank you.
@namelessone5968
@namelessone5968 Год назад
I think kasama na yan sa calculations nila. Like looking at your monthly bills makikita nila how much yung kailangan ng bahay (kWh consumption) at binabase nila yun dun if how many batteries yung kailangan at meron din yan DIY or cheaper alternative as he said in the video pero mas mahal sa kanya kasi mahal na klase na batteries yung ginamit niya.Also if you want to add more batteries ay pwede naman as long as kaya pa e.charge ng solar panels.
@hii1479
@hii1479 Год назад
It's about you load capacity of your house po. So ayon I hope makatulong hahaa

Hi Slater! Just wanna ask the ROI when it comes to just using the solar panels alone? W/o the battery powered system
@franciscofletes1948
@franciscofletes1948 Год назад
The most economical set up is grid tied without batteries. I have a grid tied 8kw system that cut my meralco bill from 20k per month to 4-5k per month. I have a stand by 20kva diesel generator for black outs and it runs all my appliances my entire load not just essentials. The cost of the solar was 410k and the cost of the generator was 370k, so it’s 780k not 2 million. So my ROI will be 4 years and 4 months not 10 years. Plus he’s not taking into account the added cost of replacing the batteries in 5-10 years. The battery technology right not doesn’t support that investment financially. Maybe In the future it will but right now you’re better off with a generator for back up during brown outs with ATS. The only reason to get a battery system in Philippines now is for the “green benefits “ to the planet. Not for ROI or economic benefits because financially it doesn’t make much sense with current technology

@bryanfuentes1452 Год назад
@@franciscofletes1948 I heard from some people saying that power companies do not pay your excess power from your solar setup even if it is exported to their grid. So Im guessing that you were only able to cut your bill because you're using solar in daytime then grid power at night?
@franciscofletes1948
@franciscofletes1948 Год назад
@@bryanfuentes1452 net metering is a process whereby you export excess electricity to the grid and sell it back to meralco. It’s a long process, meralco needs to install a second meter and they sell you electricity at 11 php per kWh but only buy it from you at 5.5 (50%) but they do buy it from you at a 50% loss. It takes about 3-4 months to have net metering approval. It’s best to hire someone to do the legwork for you because you have to go to your barangay city hall multiple times and meralco so I just paid my solar installer to do it. But I consume most of what my home produces I export very little to the grid. Net metering is great when I travel and the house is unoccupied but when we’re home it doesn’t come into play much.

@@jharmainetunacao9044 Go solar Ph. I believe there are 2 vloggers that did an in-depth vlog on their solar instal with go solar. Hungry Syrian and My PI dream. I got the most efficient panels. Each panel is 540 kw. My roof is irregular tegula tile and my subdivision in Suntrust Verona near tagaytay has rules about the panels not being too visible. So I could only install 15 panels. So I had to buy the most efficient panels. If you have ample roof space the efficiency of the panels doesn’t matter as much because you can just add more panels.

Maintenance wise... Let's add that Philippines is a HOT country. Therefore, it is necessary to cool the surface of the solar panels since they produce electricity from sunlight but NOT when it's overheated. You might want to install some sprinklers on the panels for those hot hot days for maximum productivity. Pero, wow! Sana all! 😎

@@michaeltubol4884 probably not that big of a deal, it's like rain. Also, a sprinkler does "clean" the surface as well but not cooling overheated panels can actually shut the entire electricity production process for that panel.

Very informative content. Nahighlight din nito yung main concern with a typical hybrid solar power system which is systems COST. Yung ROI na naconsider lang dito is very linear which I suppose is assuming na hindi nagbabago ung cost/kWh from distributors. Pero as we all know, lagi tumataas kuryente, kaya the ROI can significantly improve pa. Para siguro hindi madiscourage yung mga gusto magpa-install because of cost, pwede mag start muna as grid tie solar power system(no batteries) then use hybrid inverters na agad(this is preparation if magkabudget na for batteries). Batteries typically costs almost 30-50% of the overall setup. Depende na ito sa standby load and mga appliances na gusto mo mapatakbo during a brownout. It will all depend on the knowledge/competence of your installer so do due diligence with your installers pa din.
