I always find Guru Pathik's moment in this episode very comforting, there's something about a character going through hell and finding someone wise and kind at the end to comfort and take care of them that's very reassuring, even if it's just temporarily

This is when the showrunner were all, "Ok, pixar. I see you."

The tale of iroh is the saddest scene in the show, but appa's lost day's is the saddest overall episode in the show.

this is the episode where you realize that every step team avatar took actually put them further away from appa. instead of being taken east to ba sing se, appa was actually taken west to the fire nation colonies. appa has officially done 200% of the work so far of reuniting them, going all the way back to the site of the library and then continuing onward out of the desert. appa made a wrong guess when he realized how close the eastern air temple was, but of course the guru got him back on the right path. finally, appa is within the city, but he's been trapped by the dai li... team avatar needs to finally start pulling their weight here.

This is the kick in the tenders after already getting hit in the gut by last episode.

back-to-back gut-wrenching episodes. it's a miracle that those of us who watched as kids didn't wind up being more fucked up than we already are lol but seriously, i think my favorite part about all this is that the episode won a genesis award from the humane society for how animal cruelty is depicted, specifically the circus scenes. and it still amazes me to this day how this show is able to maintain a balance between showing age-appropriate images, but still being able to teach very important life lessons no matter how old or young the audience may be. just stunning. i was sad when this didn't drop on wednesday, but it was so worth the wait

I think it was one of the writers, or maybe another channel, but I had it explained to me that these were Appa's trials, or karmic balancing. Basically, he's had a pretty sheltered, trouble free life, most of it anyway, living with the air monks, he's had zero conflict prior to being frozen in the iceberg. If you believe in karma, you see how this episode did him good. The show treated Appa like one of the human characters, like a hero. Heroes need a good beating once in a while, and so do we.

2021 so far is not much better than 2020.
