It is a common misconception that Koreans prefer fried chicken for dinner. In reality, they savor fried chicken at pubs, accompanied by beer and in the company of friends. Fried chicken is not typically regarded as a dinner meal in Korean culture.
@FindingGinaMarie

The place we went for fried chicken was a pub. We don't have friends in South Korea, but we didn't want that to stop us from trying fried chicken. We can't imagine having it as a second meal after dinner, even as late-night food. It was a fun experience for us, though, but we'd probably try somewhere else next time. I also think that beer might have cut some of the sweetness of the chicken, but we really aren't beer drinkers. Thanks for watching and for the insight. Hi EB, It's important for us to learn about the history of the places we visit, and we try to share some of that with our viewers. We spent a month in South Korea, so we did eat a lot of Korean food, just not as much in Seoul. Our Airbnb hosts in Busan used to own restaurants and invited us over for a dinner with many local dishes, which was one of the highlights of our time in South Korea. It was an expensive city for us to stay a significant amount of time, but we were glad we could spend time there and it's a place we would like to see again. Plastic surgery seems to be much more common in South Korea than in the US, in part due to the K-Pop culture. In fact, I was surprised to read that many students get plastic surgery as a graduation gift. It's often seen as almost an expectation that if you can afford to tweak your looks, you should do it. I don't know how much cheaper it is because I think it somewhat depends on what the surgery is that is being done. However, because of its mainstream popularity, there's some very advanced techniques that are used in South Korea as well. Here's an interesting article: www.telegraph.co.uk/global-health/women-and-girls/south-korea-cosmetic-surgery-double-eyelid/ Thanks for watching! -Judy

@@FindingGinaMarie As a Korean, I can definitely say that there are much more types of Korean food that do not contain chili peppers (such as gochujang, gochugaru, etc.) than korean food has chili. And among spicy Korean foods, there are more foods that contain gochugaru (chili powder), like kimchi, than foods that contain gochujang (chili paste). Kimchi does not originally contain chili peppers. The sauce for Bibimbap, tteokbokki, and bibim noodle were originally soy sauce, not chili sauce. Korean food originally focused on the original taste of ingredients. Look at the Joseon Dynasty royal cuisine drama Dae Jang Geum. There is not a single dish with chili peppers in it. In particular, even today, Korean New Year's Day and Chuseok holiday food or ancestral rite food does not contain a single chili pepper. What you experience is not all of Korean food. # Recommended Korean food without a single chili pepper: clam kalguksu, seafood kalguksu, chicken kalguksu, beef bone kalguksu, tteokguk, kongguksu, tteok(songpyeon) miyeokguk(seaweed soup), seolleongtang, gomgtang, galbitang, samgyetang, yukhoe(raw beef), beef bulgogi, galbi, galbijjim, japchae, eobok jengban, white kimchi, soy sauce bibimbap, soy sauce tteokbokki (gung jung tteokbokki), shinseonro, gujeolpan, tteokgalbi, soy sauce pork bulgogi, vegetable porridge, white porridge, abalone porridge, grilled fish, pollack soup, egg soup, soy sauce marinated raw crab, bori gulbi, buchimgae, seafood pajeon, peongyang nengmyeon, regular kimbap.

In terms of Korean food, every dish is meant to be shared, except the bowl of rice and individual soup (gukbap) in front of you. Think about when you order Chinese food where everyone takes a litte of everything ordered, or think of Italian food where the main dish is a communal dish, or just think of the Thanksgiving dinner. Everyone doesn't get their own turkey.
@FindingGinaMarie
@FindingGinaMarie 3 месяца назад
Thanks for this information; it's helpful to know. Restaurant culture doesn't always work the way you are suggesting, though. I guess it depends, but when we used to order Chinese food, each person got their own entree and took home their own leftovers. Others at the table might take a taste of others' food, but communal meals stopped happening a long time ago for us when we ordered from restaurants. When we were in Taiwan, we tried to split meals and it was not okay to do it. While we definitely eat "family style" for home-cooked meals, we aren't used to doing that at restaurants unless we are ordering tapas. But your explanation makes sense when it comes to Korean food for sure! -Judy
@rxlxviii
@rxlxviii 3 месяца назад
@@FindingGinaMarie I understand why you prefer not to share communal dishes, but you can always ask for an ahp jyuhp shi (literally meaning plate in front), which is an individual plate foreach person and spoon/ladle the communal food for each individual. And due to so many tourists visiting Korea these days, I'm sure that most restaurants will accommodate the request.
@FindingGinaMarie
@FindingGinaMarie 3 месяца назад
It's not that we don't want to share them, but we didn't understand that's a common thing to do in a restaurant. However, I think that seems best suited when you have more than two people or you can end up with too much food, especially when it's a woman and man who don't need a ton of calories in their day! But this is great information to have! -Judy

Think about Korean BBQ. If you haven't gone to a korean BBQ place, you should give it a try. Typically, when you orrder the cuts of meat, you cook it in the middle of of the table so everyone can share. Also, you will get a lot of side dishes that are meant for sharing as well. It's typically a family style eating culture.

I can’t tell you how often we mistakenly order too much food! Many dishes have been very large portion sizes but we didn’t know. We think in the US the portion sizes are big but other countries do too! Love the info in the video.

Thanks so much for watching and for letting us know we aren't alone on this! The second time we visited Italy we decided we needed to try an appetizer as well as a primi and secondi. No, we didn't! And of course the waiter would always tell us that the pasta portion was small. No it wasn't! We have learned our lesson for the most part. My Italian tutor mentioned that even Italians want to feel like they get plenty of food for the price, but we don't need that much food, especially if we want to have dessert! We felt awful about leaving behind all that fried chicken, but there was no way we could eat it all and we didn't enjoy it enough to take it with us. I'd almost be willing to pay full price for half portions at restaurants or to have restaurants allow you to share a dish (but as we found in Taiwan, they really don't like you to do that!). -Judy

😂🤣 you said “pallet expander” with such grace trying not to cough from the heat/spice! I would have been jumping up and down looking for anything to take the “sting” out of the experience! Mine wasn't as spicy as it looked; it really just had a lot of seasonings that I inhaled. And contrary to what Kevin said, his was not spicier than mine. But both had too much sweetness and were way too heavy for a day when we really were looking for salad! We are glad we tried it though! It's supposed to go well with beer, and maybe that would have been a better contrast. Wasabi packs a LOT of heat! We are so looking forward to meeting up in Colmar! -Judy

On the other hand, Seoul was incredible. It was too expensive for a month, but we will be back and give it more time. Thanks as always for watching! -Judy

Maybe so, but the restaurant specifically called them Korean noodles. It was a local restaurant and we were tired after our long walk along the stream. During your travels, I bet no one native to the countries complained about cultural appropriation. In fact, people like it when they are able to share their culture and you participate in their culture. What people don't like is if you disrespect their culture which is usually done by the people who complain about cultural appropriation. They would say things like, "well, we do it this way where I'm from" without even trying to understand why things are being done a certain way.

Great episode, your videos are fun and educational. I liked how you picked up on the nuance about the locals protesting, and the government actually deciding to listen to the people and preserve the area. That ain’t happening in so many other Asian countries. You had an epic Asian tour! I appreciated the whole series. I think you aced it👍 You chose the best places to visit and did a great job taking your audience along. Looking forward to the next tour. Was Verona hinted at? I’d love to see a Veneto and Tuscany tour… PS, next time you return to this part of the world, fly for an extra few hours, to discover Oz, NZ and maybe Fiji. It warrants at least 7 months

Thank you so much, Dan, we appreciate your perspective! We've been on some fast travel, so apologies for our delayed response. After Seoul, we spent 10 days in the charming Orvieto, then met our daughter in Rome, spent time on the Amalfi Coast, are currently in Florence and doing some day trips, and then a few days with Verona as our home base for some day trips. Our daughter wants to be exposed to as much as possible, which isn't our preferred way to travel, but it has been wonderful to see Italy through her eyes and visit some places we haven't made time for yet. We absolutely want to visit NZ and Melbourne specifically. We visited Sydney in 2019 before we started full-time travel and loved it. It was our hope to get there in February/March this year, but it was so expensive that we had to pivot. The area is definitely on our bucket list (including Fiji!). -Judy

I guess korea is one of the most overrated countries purely due to kpop. There arent much things to see and enjoy. In addition everything is crazily expensive. People dump cigarette butts on streets and they never hold doors for you. Plus you should order food per person. Cars never stop when you cross the roads.
@FindingGinaMarie
@FindingGinaMarie Месяц назад
We didn't think South Korea was overrated at all. Sure there's hype surrounding K-Pop, but we didn't deal with any of it and still had an amazing time. I don't know what you're looking for, but we were impressed by our short time in Seoul, and in Busan, the hiking and beaches were fabulous. We didn't see cigarette butts (but we assure you that they are in the US). Technically, it's a family-style eating country, so you shouldn't have to order food for each person. So much Korean food is meant to be shared, which we didn't know originally. I'm not sure where you got your information from, but I'm linking our other videos for you to watch. -Judy 🎥 South Korea 🇰🇷 video series: ru-vid.com/group/PLNT98lWfwdF0f9CUrzAmPwQ8yzyJBHan7&si=vhBQX8rkLlVSJytX

This is good information. I can't imagine eating fried chicken *after* dinner, even if it's a late-night bite. Well, maybe I can ;) We aren't beer drinkers, but we still wanted to try a pub and have some of their chicken (the place we went definitely had a pub vibe and had locals, even though it was only around 4pm). We saw the table next to us get ONE of our dishes and share it amongst three grown men, so we definitely goofed. We should have realized from the price that we would be getting a huge meal.
