This was fantastic, thank you! Last month, I rented a viola da gamba, bass 6 strings, and I am taking 50 min private lessons every week. Never played an instrument before but I love da gamba and I practice every day. How long does it take to see a difference? Is it a hard instrument to learn? I am still having a trouble with how easy it is to hit multiple strings at a time while I am not supposed to..

Thanks so much - that's really kind of you! And the gamba is such a fun instrument to play! I think the bowing is probably the hardest thing to learn - as you say, it's really easy to catch the other strings by accident, and it takes a while to get used to the bowing angles, but it definitely improves over time (and playing so regularly will make the differences happen very quickly). Hope you're enjoying all the wonderful gamba music!

I am a professional classical guitar player, would that ease the process of learning the gamba in the future?

I think it would - the chord patterns aren't so dissimilar, so I definitely think it would give a head start!

@@kateconway9945 It's good to hear. Then its "only" a question of learning the bowing technique and finding an instrument to begin with. :) thank you!

Well, you made it sound wonderful, but it looks strange. Luthiers were really pushing the design boundaries back then.
