And some compost to your front soil. Just take a wheelbarrow full and sprinkle it on top of your lawn. You will see a difference. I also have sand in my yard. I live close to the coast.

You're so right about the value of walking and LOOKING around your garden at some point every day, even just for ten minutes. It makes a huge difference. As far as secrets in your garden go, I would *love* to see inside your shed. How about a 'before and after' tidying the shed video for a change? Even I have to tidy my shed up every couple of years, and I'm FAR less of a neat and tidy gardener than you guys

Oir astrantia has been split twice and needs done again. Our crocosmia just took over. Pulled them 2 years ago when I was planning my border and they are still popping up

Do you guys ever get away for a holiday? I'm on Mull for 2weeks at the moment and it's taken alot of planning organising waterers for my home veg garden and allotment. Plus it's been the hottest 2 weeks I've known on Mull so goodness knows what we will go back to.

Now I know who to blame for those blackberries overgrowing everywhere here, it Scotland! Those are so prolific, with those nasty thorns, people are frequently going to the pharmacy for bandages after trying, desperately, to cut them away. The advice is right, be aware of the solar angles, the wind, and especially what soil is in place. Looking forward to seeing what nefarious plans Kate come up with. Sorry, but I blamed Scotland, with a partial blame pointing back, ancestry is partly Scottish myself. 🇨🇦

OK. I made my first comment about 2 thirds of the way through this video, so now I have other things to say. Where you live, are there some rules/regulations that affect how you use your front south-facing garden? I ask because in the UK [in England, at least] we tend to not use our front gardens for anything other than lawns/formal/'pretty' when IMO they could often be put to better use. I watch a lot of US gardening channels and it seems to me that they have vast expanses of grass out front...and you do, too! If I had a front garden like yours I like to think I'd use it for way more than a lawn and a few shrubs etc. Moving a greenhouse is a big job, but I would definitely do it if I realised mine was in utterly the wrong place. I've got a Rhino greenhouse like yours, and know after 5 years they are eminently moveable, because they're so sturdily built. However, moving YOUR greenhouse would need the shed re-siting too and that's a whole other massive job, so. I can see why Kate is resisting.

Thanks for sharing guys, love it. Best advice to my younger self - take inspiration from as many different places as you can, RU-vid is an amazing resource for that. Keep an open mind to try new things and new varieties, try at least 1 new plant every season. Finally, you will kill plants along the way, don't worry about it, just compost them and plant something else. Much love xx

Great video as usual, love the tour around the garden. Speaking about shading the greenhouse, I used to use "cool shade" with great results, which was painted on, a bit like a whitewash, and washed off easily later, on your front glass?, you've killed two birds with one stone with your apple trees , but it's just a thought. Oh and a quick question, I have quite a lot of leachate from my hot bin composter, but what's the best dilution rate? thank Q, Happy Gardening

Well we had a fun night of tornado warnings and destructive hail. So my garden isn't looking as good as yours. Anything in pots we relocated to the garage so at least those look nice. I don't know why I decided to move everything under cover, the radar kept showing the storm staying North of us, but I'm glad I did. Some things will bounce back. I'm trying a fancy method of using a bandaid or four to fix a couple tomatoes that broke, but not completely, and that still had leaves. We'll see...

Lovely vid and great advice for new gardeners, I have been in my garden for 32 years and it is always evolving, Much as at time I would love to make massive changes but little and often is better, especially as I realise I don't have the energy I did 30 years ago! And gardening should be enjoyable and we learn from putting plants int he wrong place ( annoying as it is when they die or don't thrive) there is joy to be had when you do find the right spot for something, like your seating area and it just works! I am on my first greenhouse - its 3 years old now - and two things I learned ... I should have bought a bigger one, I had the space and the budget but my husband was being a bit precious over the lawn and about building the footings so get as big a one as you can afford and have space for people. The second thing is I should have put a bed in there. Growing in pots only is quite labour intensive and I am working on how to cut down on the constant watering. Autopots system this has helped, and have bought some quad grows as well.

Has Kate tried vietnamese coriander? It has a subtle corriander flavour but apparently people who can't eat normal coriander can taste it just fine. I lost my two plants to the heat, unfortunately, or I'd give you a first hand account.

According to my experience figs are ripe when they change colour, hang down and are soft to the touch.

Hi x my apple tree fruited last year for its first time x this year it flowered but the fruits haven't set so no apples this year! Any idea why? x

Thank you for mentioning the time and effort it takes to make your gardens so lovely. Mine looks more like chaos on steroids but I am okay with that. I want to sincerely say thank you for mentioning the mental health benefits of gardening. With everything going on in people’s lives and the world around us, the benefits of spending time with plants outside cannot be understated. It has provide me a great escape and provides the opportunity to focus on the beauty found in my own backyard. I will have to try Kate’s weeding with one hand while holding a beverage in another 😊.

Well guys that was enjoyable, sat and chilled out to watch and learnt a few bits, I this year got a fig tree-dwarf type and a turkey one like yours…. I also got an apple pear and plum, all off a lady who was giving up her allotment. Anyways I had no idea how to look after the little stick and I see why it was a stick as it was only 1year old when she sold it…. Hadn’t fruited yet. I just put it in the tub and left it too it. It’s got 2 massive leaves on it now. Looking good. As for apples yes we getting lots of drop from the main apple tree in the garden but as it’s huge and put in before I moved here and many years I would say, I can’t climb up to sort it out. My neighbour is gonna help after all the fruit is finished and trim it right back into a manageable shape and size I hope same with the pear tree that’s right next to it and competing for everything. If we don’t get any pears this year- last year they were poor-may be too old a tree now- if it is then it be coming out to give the apple more room. As you say it’s always changing and moulding itself a new….. this year we have done some big jobs tho as it wasn’t working for me safety wise so have had a digger and stuff in to sort it a bit. But again like you say we feel like we been working on it since may1st and every day we been doing something and it’s been manic and still so much to do. But there’s so much we have achieved too and that’s important to acknowledge. Well done guys for helping us all open up about what we been doing and what our plans are and so forth, I know it’s not face to face but sometimes it’s the only social side of me anyone sees now with my autism and mental health issues but you have shown me it’s ok to be open and talk about stuff. And I appreciate that. I think without the garden I would be in a worse place then I am. And I’m so grateful that I am where I am. Slowly going in the right direction. Catch up soon and can’t wait to hear what Kate has in mind….. 😮

I check every day, especially the green house. It is a great pleasure and starts off the pleasure part of the evening. I also have an Astrantia. I bought one for a friends birthday but hers is still not flowering.Any tipps?

I have a garden check every day, too. I'm checking on growth, whether things are flowering, if any fruits are coming out and this helps me find any pests or bad leaves. I find it helps me connect to my garden and I think it makes the plants want to grow better for me. That's my story and I'm sticking to it 😂

Great video, thank you both 😁. I’m relatively new to gardening and initially only found videos from American or English gardeners. Tried some of the things they did last year but not very successfully (probably more to do with my skill, or lack there of, but climate too). Thankfully I found you from Gardener Scott, your so informative for us beginners and know what works for our climate (I’m up in Argyll) so hopefully will be a bit more successful this year. One of the big problems we have, as you mentioned, is getting rid of the blackberries that are sprouting everywhere

Hiya you two, nice to see all of the garden. And how grand it looks. Interesting story about the fig. Great name❣ I got a little fig at the farmer market last month. Same kind. So I am looking forward to your fig stories. My appletree ( also a colum form) has been in a pot for almost 8 years, it got almost 3 m high. Since Aug. 2020 its in the ground, its grown some more 😁 all my trees are colum form, even my blackberry is or better was, since its in the ground its gone bananas and is growing over an arch. Your garden is very much nicer than what you started with. It looks so good. 👍

I'm actually I'm the middle of looking at buying pillar apple trees but not quite sure what size pots to put them in. What size did u suggest and what type of soil and compost. Also are blueberry bushes the same as in the way u cut them back . Mine are new this year and are in pots I wonder around my garden in the evening after work but it usually takes me an hour or so ( it's a small garden ) my husband and 3 grown up children say the difference in me when I finish. Even when I see mistakes I've made it still gives me that happy feeling.

Wonderful, thoughtful video. Thank you. I recently began spending 10 minutes in the garden in the morning and another 10 minutes in the afternoon after work -the reason was because I put five bantam chickens out there so I could toss them the weeds. It has been a game changer, because no matter how busy I am. I have to take at least a few minutes twice a day to make sure they have food and water and gather their eggs, but I am now having a blast weeding the garden because they get all the weeds! What used to be a terrible chore that felt overwhelming is now a quick and fun few moments of my day and you are right Kate as I’m in the garden doing one thing my mind is also on. Oh, those vegetables need to be harvested or oh that plant doesn’t seem to be doing so well maybe I need to investigate further. Anyway, I adore your channel. Thank you for sharing.

I hear you Eli so I’ll try to be patient while I learn where the trees are shading out areas, which way the wind blows most often and so on. But I must grow something so I’ll just stick to pots for now, and maybe do some planning on paper and some research before I invest in long term structures. I managed for 3 or 4 years with just a little plastic growhouse so maybe just another wee one for this year. Meantime, need to work out the best places for my hotbin, wormery and dalek. Looks like I’m going to have lots of grass clippings to feed them on. And also what seems like miles of hedge clippings too.

This has to be one of my fav videos that you have done. I loved the tour and explaining bits and bobs etc. I'd love a greenhouse; but like you suggested; I want to take my time to figure where would be best in my garden and which direction it faces.Thank you for taking what must have been hours and hours to make it.
