It truly is crazy how so many of her number ones could be her best. Her catalog is crazy. Always Be My Baby and Fantasy are quintessential Mariah imo even though Butterfly is my favorite album of hers.
Yeah she didn't have all the control but she paved the way for other female writers/singers nowadays so many female artists can write their own songs and Mariah loves having Total control on everything
She had control over it - the concept was her idea and she even got the kid dancers. She didn't like the fact they kept her dance sequence of the running man in it - makes her cringe.

My personal choice would be Fantasy. That song encapsulates EVERYTHING about Mariah: vocals, amazing runs, melody, catchy hooks, great sample usage and that mixture of Pop with hip hop... How could a track simply top that? ❤ I find My All to be her best ballad. You guys pointed it out everything but the lyrics which are stellar! It's that great balance between emotion, sexyness and longing without being cheesy. Honey it's amazing! Can't believe Matt overlooked it SO badly lol I Don't Wanna Cry is my favorite song from debut and that Tokyo Dome performance is out of this world. Even though I don't like certain aspects of the production (which I think Mariah doesn't either lol) it's a very beautiful song. I find Always Be My Baby to be really overrated. Maybe because it was overplayed a lot recently but I barely come back to it still, I think is the 3rd best track on Daydream behing Fantasy and Underneath the Stars 🤔
I think it should be My All.. On the writing, vocal, production?? and its on its own level. Like many can sing always be my baby but noone can ever top how Mariah sang My All, like they can do their own lil version and sing it on their highest capabilities but it will never ever touch how MC sang My All. I rest my case. You can all go and @ me. I'll fight. period.
I agree and I'll add that My All is the more timeless record and song of the two. People are still covering it and playing instrumental versions of it to this day, and will be for years to come. It's becoming a modern standard. That's not the case with ABMB by any means.

P.s. speaking of Thank God I Found You Remix, my controversial opinion is that it shouldn't be called a remix but instead a cover. It doesn't really keep any of the original elements of the song (apart from the short 'thank god I found you, I was so lost without you...' part at the very end), so I don't think it carries enough over from the original to be called a remix. And then if you listen to Keith Sweat's Make It Last Forever, you realise pretty much everything from that song is used in this song. The only real differences are the added Nas verse and the slightly different production - even the runs/ad libs are mostly the same. I'm surprised I haven't seen any other lambs talk about this. while i can absolutely say with certainty that "My All" might be Mariah's best #1 (for me), that doesnt mean it's my favorite #1 lol I think Fantasy is my favorite #1 from Mariah
Oh... Not liking One Sweet Day is a big choice, BUT I will say I think I prefer the Chucky's version!! And those acapella moments from the 30th anniversary EP collection were exquisite imo. One Sweet Day is a good song when it comes ony shuffle, but I would never seek it out listening to it. Chuckys Version, however, really brings it together for me.

I let One Sweet Day slide because it's beloved more for sentimental reasons, I believe, than the incredible technical skills.... BUT WHEN YOU CUT HERO. Hero is the greatest song she ever wrote/song.... it's Anointed... it's a gift from GOD. And to think you left in Don't Forget About Us, which I wholeheartedly forgot was even a song. 😟😤🤣😭😒

I agree that Always be my baby is her best song. In fact it is my favorite song of her. In ABMB you get all the elements of Mariah and her Pen game, along with her great vocal abilities. I have always seen Mariah like this light type of girl who wanted to conquer the world and be in love. It's kinda her shtick and what she represented in her career. And you hear Always be my baby it gives you the same feeling nostalgia, lightness, joy, catchiness with great vocal layerings. In my opinion it is her trademark song and her best song! I have to add that I disagree on One sweet day. That song was huge and remarkable. A few mariah songs that are great but I never really cared for are Heartbreaker, dreamlover, Honey. Like there are better songs that should have made the bracket like Breakdown, Can't let go, The roof, I know what you want
My All for the vocal and the MOOD which is why it's #1 for me. ABMB is about the bop and NASTALGIA. 2 things I find battle uncanny: 1. WBT and ABMB were the biggest MC RADIO hits of their decade. ABMB spent the longest running for her in the 90's and WBT broke radio and listener records. 2. AIWFCIY and Fantasy have been in multiple movies.
it's honestly so hard to pick between My All and ABMB. but i give it to ABMB because while being a fan-favorite, it is also more popular to the general public than My All.
It depends on the regional perspective. I feel like for most Americans, ABMB is the favourite for sure. But internationally, “My All” is much more popular. Even Without You is more popular than ABMB internationally.
You should do this type of video solely on REMIXES! Haha. Because while all the songs are classics, some of the remixes are actually improvements; to me, at least. The ‘All I Want For Xmas’ SoSo Def Remix has some of her most creative whistles. ‘Thank God I Found You’ Make it Last remix w Joe & Nas is amazing… and ‘My All/Stay Awhile’ with Lord Tariq & Peter Gunz is something ELSE! ‘We Belong Together’ remix is almost better than the ballad! With Jadakiss and Styles P… ‘Always Be My Baby’ remix with DaBrat and Xscape! Kandi and Tiny!! Haha. Even the Soso Def HONEY remix (with Brat) is so much fun. It’s kind of a mess but in a good way. Also underrated is the ‘HATEU’ remix with Big Boi and Gucci Mane. Less sad and depressing than the original!

There were some moments of this video that truly felt homophobic. Like, certain songs should have been pitted against songs that a little bit more distinct from the ones selected, but ultimately, the right song won: "Always Be My Baby" is peak-Mariah Carey. It's got phenomenal vocals and stellar background vocals, brilliant production, a magnificent composition, stunning lyricism, and it's just fucking catchy as all hell! Once you listen to it, you never forget it. That's one of those songs that you remember where you were physically, mentally and emotionally in your life and recall everything. It's pop nirvana and R&B heaven rolled into one. Most artists at that time in her career would have just floated by on celebrity and she just kept getting better with each release. ("Daydream" is to Mariah as "4" is to Beyoncé, a stellar album that changed how we listened to pop/R&B that got its flowers later on and shows its influence over time.) We stan!

Nope to almost all of this. I love all these songs, but Always Be My Baby has never been my favorite and (in my opinion) is more sing songy than One Sweet Day. Played it for my 22 year kld foster son and he was not impressed at all, meaning it doesnt necessarily resonate with the younger crowd. His pick was Fantasy and We Belong Together. Oh and My All.
Love the idea of the video, but I think is disrespectful to knock off some of them. She busted her butt since day one composing, performing and producing to create her unbeatable body of work for 33 years almost non stop. It's not fair for her, you can completely dislike her music but it's undeniable that it is top of the top and what other singers aspire to at least have a 1/ 5 of her success. It's not OK to reduce her accomplishments and legacy to the industry. Mariah disses someday because they forced her to change the production to make it more radio friendly with the h3lp of Ben Margulies but that's not even close to what she envisioned for her song. One sweet day was recorded because Mariah reached out to them for a song she was work8ng on because she had lost a dear friend to her from AIDS and what was cool is that Boyz II Men were working on a very similar song because they had just post their manager I think it was. If you listen to a version acapella there a few verses before the original released song status and that's the part Boyz had worked and then after that it switches to Mariahs lyrics alternating both their lyrics. The song in my opinion and popular opinion as well is that I lived up to the heightbI mean it was the 4th song ever to debut at #1 and stayed atop for 16 weeks holding the reco4d for 27 years
