An clean empty house would not deter me from purchasing it. With it empty, you can see the actual size and can easily determine how YOUR furniture would fit. Trying to "see" beyond someone else's decor can distract you.

Right? 200,000 under the price of similar houses in the neighborhood, and people can’t see past some wallpaper? You can hire a lot of painters for 200,000. And I’d prefer to see the house empty. Much better idea where my stuff could go. I can’t imagine why this house wasn’t snapped up. Especially when the “comparable house” was completely 80s as well, and the furniture was ugly and dated. The couple’s house was mostly done with fresh paint, hardwood, and decent carpets. It literally just needed a little painting and carpet removal in some rooms. And it was really big. It’s just the luck of the draw what sells sometimes. Just gets seen by the right person

Too, millennials and others don't want to do updating themselves. They want a perfect house (for them) without any work, and all for a cheap price. I like the "unfurnished" look much better than the "crammed with untidy stuff" look.

All 3 homes that I've bought & sold have been empty and it's not hindered the sale timeline (vs others in the area.) The one thing that has hurt sales was in house #4 - my parent's home, which sat unsold for 4 months until we took down about 2000 square feet of wallpaper and borders... boom, the house sold 2 weeks later.

Actually I bought an empty 1980's house. The huge paintings are overwhelming and definitely not to many people's taste. I would never hang those huge bold (and to my taste, gaudy and ugly looking) paintings in a house I'm trying to stage to appeal a broad range of potential buyers. I suspect a friend or family member painted them and the owners are trying to advertise the art. Those huge bold pieces do NOT complement any of the rooms. The house I fell in love with was largely empty with some of the most unfathomably hideous decor/fixtures/wallpaper/carpet imaginable. Other houses with nearly-identical layouts in the neighborhood were going for $50-75K more, and three years later I can tell you that the amount of time and money I've spent updating it has cost me far, far less than that. I would definitely encourage anyone who is looking to buy a home to see past the cosmetics, especially if the asking price leaves you with the ability to make the changes yourself. Because as much as I hate my outdated brass bathroom fixtures, I'd rather look at them for another year than be paying an extra $12K per year on my mortgage.

The fact that 'there's no furniture in here' is putting people off is madness to me. In the UK, we almost always view a property when it's completely empty. 1 - it allows you to imagine your own furniture in the place and 'see' yourself living in the space. 2 - you can get a good look at the walls, layout etc and not worry that cracks and damp have been hidden by a bookcase 3 - it tells you the house is ready to move in straight away and you're not waiting for the current owners to close their next sale and get moved out. I'd be overjoyed to view an empty house!

I'm speaking as an artist myself; no artist wants their work to be seen without a proper gallery showing, and certainly not on a show like this---it's a fine venue for commercially made posters, but not for artwork that's had a lot of time put into it, even if just prints of originals, and doesn't let anyone see what we do in a setting that's compatible with our work. The homeowner was willing to put her stuff up on the walls (but as hideous as it was, that would tend to dissuade a lot of potential buyers now), but that was her decision within her own home. That's not an official statement, but both my late mother and I were/are artists, so I've always lived among them, and that's how the majority of the people we were around felt.

There is no such thing as too much house-- the artwork is a turn off-. An unfurnished room is not necessarily unsellable. The lack of a unified concept for the flooring and the different types of wallpaper are unfortunate. Removing the gym equipment is essential. If you rent the furniture, the cost will continue during the entire time the house is on the market. It might have been more cost-effective to leave the house totally unfurnished and reduce the cost by a proportionate amount. If would be nice to know if the house received multiple offers.

I like retro so I actually liked the plaid wallpaper and vintage light in the kitchen. I just would have changed the flooring and counter tops in both bathroom and kitchen. I'm pretty sure this is 80s not 70s design. My place was build in 1995 and I had the same time in my kitchen that I hated and replaced. The decor options that were popular when this aired in 2009 are outdated in 2021!

In England they paint over the wallpaper. Apparently, this woman brought that with here. Those kitchen cabinets are mid1970s, and should have been refinished.

why does every single home in North America I see online have a colonial kitchen? such kitchens were globally trendy in the 1960s-- but that was sixty years ago. Around the world those cabinets have long since been replaced with more modern designs, and new homes stopped having them put in many decades ago. In Australia, a colonial kitchen would turn off just about every buyer under the age of seventy -- only in a retirement home would a colonial kitchen carry some appeal. Don't the vast majority of North Americans prefer modern interior design for their kitchen, as seen in the latest homes and apartments? why are American kitchens in a time warp? can anyone explain it?
@self-publishinghelp8596
@self-publishinghelp8596 3 года назад
No, because we don’t know what you mean by a colonial kitchen? Do you just mean 60s cupboards? Most people do update their kitchens. Maybe you think all NA homes have dated kitchens because you’re basing it on shows like this where the house needs some updating.

What's with the big fireplace in such a shallow room? Too many different floor treatments. I don't think the lack of furniture is the problem, too many different wood types and tones. Too much to undo.

Nice update but I actually really dislike this house. It’s boring for starters and despite the updates it still looks dated with all the pine walls. The bathrooms, although a huge improvement, are still dated and extremely boring. The kitchen is just horrible. That’s just my opinion though.

We never buses our formal living room and the family room was too small. Did we do this correctly. The old dining room was near formal living room now open space. Thanks for your opinion.

Formal dining room is for formal private dinner parties, which used to be the trend for middle class back in the day. Nowadays the trend is to have open space connecting dining rooms to kitchen so people can display their cool updated kitchens, and host casual parties where they try to display their cooking skills to guests.

The way she placed the two sofas in the sitting room was awkward. There was a sliding glass door behind the one sofa so it blocked off the entrance and exit. The two sofas were facing one another but if the one sofa was placed on the wall so it faced the fireplace it would have become the focal point of the room. Very awkward placement of furniture throughout the house and what furniture they rented was dated. A great improvement over the gaudy colored walls. The kitchen cabinets should have been painted white to get rid of that dated look and freshen it up. Kitchens are the biggest reason for buying a house so I can't understand why the bathrooms were the only place they really did some renovations. I rate this a five out of ten as far as sellability and appeal to buy a house.

These shows are from 2007-2008, but they leave in appliances from the 70’s-80’s... horrible. Paint the walls all you want... nobody wants repainted cabinets and old Formica countertops... add another $2000 to the budget and do it right.
